View Full Version : Incidental Music, or lack of

Has anyone else noticed the lack of music in TR1? Sure, there's the background cave noises and stuff, but what about the wolf music?!
I played TR1 on Playstation first, and then bought it for PC when Unfinished Business came out, and was appalled when I realised that the in-game music wasn't there!
Core Design say it was a 'design decision', but that makes no sense! Sure, PCs might not have been able to handle lot's of music back when TR1 first came out, but it's had about 3 re-releases here in the UK, so modern PCs sould be able to cope!
Sorry to rant, but it gets to me. Would a film get released on without any incidental music? Tch.
It's still a good game though.

Core says it was an "executive decision" not to include music with the original Tomb Raider. Personally, I like it that way.

I don't know why Core didn't put any music in the PC version. I mean, it wouldn't have slowed the game down or anything, and I think the TR1 music was cool. I suppose there must have been a reason.
I did go as far as to copy the music into the level editor so I can build it into my levels... :D

Hi all http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/wave.gif
Sorry for bringing this old thread up again.
I've now managed to set up TR1 and started playing it for the first time in years (since it was released!)
I originally played it on the PS1 and although it is bringing back many fond memories I'm quite disappointed that there is no dramatic music when I first enter a room. All that gothic aaaahhh aaaahhing and the guitar music really added to the atmosphere of the game IMO.
Is there really no way of implementing the music into the game?
Also another slight gripe. When watching the FMV sequences like the intro etc the graphics are very blocky even though I am running the the game with Glidos. The game itself looks fantastic but I thought that the short sequences between main parts of the game add so much to the storyline that its a shame that they are so pixelated. Can this be fixed?
Any help is appreciated and I'd like to read your views on this aswell.

Hi Lee,
Using VDMSound with glidos seems to solve fmv problems. There should be a link to it on the glidos website.

Hi lee104, if you are using Windows XP or Windows 2000, make sure that "Enable Digital CD Audio for this CD-ROM device" checkbox is turned off (not checked). You can check this by going to Device Manager, double click on your CD-ROM device and then properties.

For the time being, it's a no.

But Paul Gardiner has already thought about it and is secretly working on a clever way to add such a feature in a future version of Glidos. It's not an easy job though, and it might reveal impossible to implement. So just don't hold your breath http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/smile.gif

Thanks Blokkie for your help although I do have the sound effects like footsteps, bears growling and bats eating my face off, just no music.

Thanks Kaminari, I hope he manages it because it's a shame to play the game like this when I know how much it adds to it from playing it originally on the PS1.

Actually:

I just cant imagine playing TR1 WITHOUT the music. http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/music2.gif

Remember that level when lara runs into that area with the giant spynx, the camera pulls away to reveal its enormity, then that fantastic music cuts in?...............WOW a defining moment for me which changed the way I looked at games on a whole.

OMG - getting all nostalgic now I am - The best TR experience ever (For me anyway)

yea i mean really they could have added more music, but you know it was made in 1996 and they werent too experience with making 3-dimensional games back then

Wow, I can't believe the PC version doesn't have music I think it's one of the best elements of the PSX game, mysterious and haunting, complements the game perfectly, I just wish there was more of it!

It's nice to hear it on it's own, just pop the CD into your standalone CD player (not your PSX / PC CD-ROM drive) and hit play! It's on track 2 onwards. It's also interesting to hear the voice parts too http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/smile.gif

You could of course try playing your old PSX discs in a emulator on your PC: I'd recommend ePSXe , works brilliantly
