View Full Version : TR1 scratchy sound

I'm running WinXP, following the guide from the tomb raider chronicles page I installed the latest vdmsound, glidos, and used their xp installer to install the game. It's working almost perfectly except that the sound effects (footsteps, animal growls, etc) all seem to have a kinda scratchy echo to them. Was the game originally like this, or is there some setting I can change to fix it?

Hello Merick. Welcome to our forums. :)

You can do something about it, Read here: #8 (http://www.tombraiderforums.com/showpost.php?p=1271625&postcount=8) :)

Are your sound drivers updated?

Could you run, then copy and paste the Diagnose (http://www.tombraiderhub.com/download/diagnose.exe) report so we can have a look into your computer?

Hi Joseph. I was looking at the same post. But he runs TR through Glidos. Do you think Zebius' post will help since it's for dgVoodoo?

Joseph

Yes LI, that should work as well on Glidos. He has to manually edit the VDMSound properties, Soundblaster tab, select "1.0 Soundblaster". It is not a revolutionary solution, the soundblaster is a less brilliant, flatter sound, that's all. Let's see what soundchip he has...

Just in case.....

Don't try and install the game manually, just edit the c:\tombraid\hmiset.cfg in notepad (Make a backup copy first) and change the setting to those mentioned in Jo's link.

Joseph, I tried editing the hmiset.cfg file like in the post you linked to, but it didn't change anything in game. As for my sound drivers, I use creative's auto-update at least once a month. Here's the diagnose output:

Wonderfull! I too have the X-Fi! :tmb: I accept the somewhat crackling noises, because the sound overall is brilliant and strong! i have it set to 4.05 (Soundblaster 16).

Originally the ingame sound is not like that, when you play TR1 on Windows ME on this hardware, you get perfect sound.

You could try this: Edit the file Glidos.ini (Program Files\ Glidos): Remove the lines Mp3BackgroundSounds: Yes and Set RedbookEmulation: Yes

Did you connect the audiocable between dvd-rom player and X-Fi card?

Removed the lines, but no change in the game. Also tried changing some of the settings in vdms.ini but no change there either

no, I haven't connected the audio cable - don't really see a resaon too, I only use the pc to play games, not cd's or dvd's. As far as I know the sound effects aren't in cd tracks and so shouldn't be affected by whether or not the cable is connected. Besides, the background music from the cd tracks are playing flawlessly, with no static that I can hear.

Are there any other dos sound fixes for xp besides vdmsound that can be used with glidos?

VDMSound is the only i know of and is widely used, generally considered the superb very best! Mr. Glidos Paul Gardiner himself recommends it www.glidos.net (http://www.glidos.net)

The audio cable is considered necessary for the Redbook audio (the tracks on the CD to mix with the ingame sounds). You should connect it; i have it too. Also on the Audigy's on my other PC's

Hi Joseph. I was looking at the same post. But he runs TR through Glidos. Do you think Zebius' post will help since it's for dgVoodoo?

Yes LI, that should work as well on Glidos. He has to manually edit the VDMSound properties, Soundblaster tab, select "1.0 Soundblaster". It is not a revolutionary solution, the soundblaster is a less brilliant, flatter sound, that's all. Let's see what soundchip he has...

I have to admit that I've only ever had the crackling sound problem with dgVoodoo, with Glidos I've never had any sound problems.

With Glidos, i always noticed a slight asynchronicity between sound and the animation. In DgVoodoo/VDMSound you can correct that.
