View Full Version : This is lookin' great!
Hello to all the old members and all the new faces on here! I've been browsing the Anniversary threads, and I must say it is looking fantastic!
I actually never played the first Tomb Raider (I know it's sad.... but started on the second one), and was wondering what people's opinion are about skipping the original and just playing Anniversary. I've been thinking it over, and can think of reasons both for and against this. If I just play Anniversary without the original first, it will all be completely new to me with good graphics. But if the new game isn't as great as the original, I might miss what so many people experienced in 1996.
So.... anyone wanna help me out?

The safest bet in your case may be to wait and see what the verdict is after the game comes out. It won't be an hour before you'll see people posting very passionately about this game!

Ok... I personally think that the original TR (with the exception of old graphics) was the best tomb raider. Although Im looking forward to the anniversary edition, I still dont believe that it will be as good as the original. It is for this reason that I think you should play the Anniversary edition first and therefore it wont get your hopes up as much as those who have played the original and desperately want a remake with legend graphics.
On the other hand, if you have lots of spare time and want to know what all the fuss is about... play the original, just dont expect great graphics. I have recently played the original again with my girlfriend and totally loved every minute of it, but it does have its weaknesses, such as some really bad camera angles and the control system isn't as good as legends.
Hope this helps.
Hey beckerooz, I was in the same situation as you not too long ago and couldnt decide whether to wait for anniversary to come out or play the original. Im only a recent tomb raider fan, watched the movies first and started on legend being the first of the series that I played. Absolutely loved legend and decided that I must play all the rest of the tr series, so I worked my way backwards from aod through to tr2 (I know that must seem a weird way to do things to all the oldschoolers here!!). When I got down to tr1 I found out about anniversary, but being a sucker for classic games (I still regularly play doom 2 online) I decided that I must play the original before anniversary came out. I was not disappointed either as it is now my favourite of the tomb raider games with its fantastic story and wonderful gameplay. I say if you can handle the outdated graphics and you have the patience to set it up to run on your pc definitely play the original, you wont regret it cause it is an amazing experience.
PS. Hi to all the regulars here, I have been religiously visiting these forums for a few months now and decided that i must start contributing
Welcome aboard, Jstb4udie! :wve:
I think you should play the original first.
Personally, I'd hate to miss out on what "everyone experienced in 1996." Tomb Raider 1 is by far my favorite game out of the series, because of its music, story line, levels, and puzzles. It has a certain magic to it that no other game in the series has been able to compare to. Agreeing with post above me: If you can handle the outdated graphics, play the first one before playing Anniversary. You seriously won't regret it.
Besides, there will be so much hype on here once Anniversary is released; people posting immediate opinions and comparisons between the original and the remake. You don't want to miss the fun!
You MOST DEFINITELY have to play TR1 before aniversary.

I agree, TR1 is the best.
To those concerned about the graphics, don't forget that PS2s can turn on texture smoothing for PS1 games. It makes the game look quite a bit better.
Well, I could see why you would just want to wait for the Anniversary release, but the original is by far the BEST Tomb Raider game out there. I started the series on it, and still go back and play it (I just recently re-beat it when I heard about Anniversary)
Just look at it for its wonderful story and the superb voice acting (diologue, attitudes, call it whatever) and look over the slightly outdated graphics and you will not be dissapointed. Also, the controls are a little easier to learn on the PlayStation in my opinion.
like it or not, trAE is looking is trying to gain power right now, so knowing that they come after the original they will try to surprise you the must in every level... so as i think the right order is the original and then the AE, not because its the way it should,.. but because of the enjoingit,.. TR1, and then TRAE its the way its conceived, TRAE and then TR1, will spoil every seond of nice moments,... you could have,.. thats for sure,..
i'd say it's a great idea to play TR1 first. i think the most fun in the anniversary edition comes from 'wow, so this is how they updated palace midas!' and 'wow, i love the redesign of natla' and stuff like that. the recognition makes it fun IMO.
if you just play TRA, it's probably great, but if you play TR1 first, TRA will be SUPAH ÜBER AWESOME ^^
I went back about six months ago and replayed TR1 and had a great time. It was not as hard as some of the later TRs and was a lot less frustrating and more fun. I am looking forward to TRA. Hopefully most folks will not fall into the trap of making too many comparisons and just enjoy both games for what they are.
IMO, you should definatly play the original!
Not just for anniversary, but so you can feel that magic.
You've got three months until release.
You should play the original one first and experience it's magick :) Then play AE. I've got my few concerns about the level desings and story and Im planning to play the original one too first before I'l play AE.
Wow! Thanks for all the really great feedback! I think I'm going to take all your advice and try and get myself a copy of the original and check it out before Anniversary comes out... It'll give me something to pass the time waiting for the new one.
I personally think that you should play TR I first, so you can see what the fuss is about. Also, you can appreciate it in all its beauty. ;)
