NPD has released the December sales numbers, and overall gamers spent a whopping $3.7 billion in games and hardware in the big holiday month. The breakdown between game sales and hardware were $1.7 and $1.6 billion, respectively.

Overall the biggest seller was the Nintendo DS, followed up by the PlayStation 2, and the Xbox 360. Here's the breakdown of December console sales.

Nintendo DS - 1.6 million units
PlayStation 2 - 1.4 million units
Xbox 360 - 1.1 million units
PSP - 953,200
Game Boy Advance - 850,700
Wii - 604,200 units
PlayStation 3 - 490,700 units

To date in North America PlayStation 2 is still the dominant console at 37.1 million units. The Xbox 360 has racked up 4.5 million units, Wii 1.1 million units, PlayStation 3 687,000 units. On the handheld front, The Game Boy Advance has totally 35.1 million units, Nintendo DS 9.2 million units, and PSP 6.7 million units to date.

Top 3 games for 2006 include Madden NFL 07 selling 2.8 million copies, The New Super Mario Bros. 2 million copies, and Gears Of War 1.8 million copies.

For December, Gears of War topped the charts racking up 817,700 copies, followed by Guitar Hero 2 at 805,200, and Madden NFL 07 selling 727,100 copies.

The GBA sold that many units? Im quite surprised by that.

Sony's really need to sort themselves out quickly if the PS3 is going to be a hit.

Yeah cause people are still buying PS2s instead of PS3s and thats not good really.

Why not?
The more people that buy PS2s, the more games that will come out for the PS2 and the longer the games will continue being made for it, which benefits most people as the PS3 is very expensive and there are so few of them at the present time.

I suppose but not as good graphics physics etc. so that could make a difference..

I'm more interested in the sales for THIS month. I heard PS3 sales have grinded to a hault.
