Sorry, double post..

I have been working on a new version - 2.3

I have tried to implement the ablity to search by username, its not really that fantastic but I am still trying to improve it. This release is still BETA, so don't complain if things don't work.

You can test it here: http://alpha-lite.co.uk/stuff/googlesearch.php

Please note, if at times it seems to be not working or you get errors, thats because I am still working on it.

Thanks,
Jamie.

I am also in the proccess of adding a feature that allows you to search through old (archived) posts only. This will hopefully be useful to some users.

At the moment, it looks a mess and does not work that well. I am going to work on it later tonight.

well.let's begin a simple game

I got 30 pages :D I got 55 pages (with omitted threads, 98 pages).

I'm not clear on what checking "old posts" is supposed to do.

I just noticed last week that if you click USER CP near the to[p left of a page, you see a list of subscribed theads. If I choose ALL, there's 410 entries, nearly the 549 I got from the search.

Google doesn't link to all internet items, I suppose some posts are left out.

Great that we finally have a search of the forums, this is long overdue. :)

I'm slightly confused about why using google is better than using the built in search though?

It doesn't do anything at the moment, it doesn't work properly. I still haven't got it to work yet, but thats only a BETA version.

I'm slightly confused about why using google is better than using the built in search though?

It isn't, but it is still better than nothing. :D

Gambit37
06-02-07, 11:01
It isn't, but it is still better than nothing. :D
What's the reason for not using the built in search then? If it's all part of the forum software, wouldn't it be easier to simply enable it?

I'm guessing it's to do with word indexing putting too much of a strain on the server with so many posts and too many users doing too many searches? How does this compare with google indexing the site?

I run a forum myself and I'm interested in these answers as I think our search takes a lot of server load too.

Lavinder

The built in search makes the forum overload I think :)

jamieoliver22
06-02-07, 16:51
What's the reason for not using the built in search then? If it's all part of the forum software, wouldn't it be easier to simply enable it?

Yes, it would take a very large strain on the server. The forums have over 1.5 million posts and as you can imagine, it would cripple it.

This forum search is an alternative to the built-in search and still allows people to find certain posts. I admit its not full proof, but it is still better than having nothing (like it was before).

Jamie.

Gambit37
07-02-07, 21:57
There is a policy here of not "bumping" old threads. As this is the case, why not simply prune everything out older than say, 6 months, and be done with it? That would improve performance somewhat.... ;)

jamieoliver22
08-02-07, 11:28
Old posts are automatically pruned.. If you look at the bottom of a forum, you can see the prune options. The default is about 45 days, which can be changed to allow you to find old posts.

As long as people don't end up replying to these old posts, there will be no problem. The point of the search is to help people to find these old posts and find any old news they wish.

Gambit37
08-02-07, 13:46
But pruning means deleting. Those options simply show posts within a certain time period, the posts are still there in the database. For example, If I set the General Chat date selection to "beginning", with my current page preferences, I get 1493 pages going back to November 2000!

If you actually deleted the old posts, you would have a much more efficient forum, surely? And could then enable the forums own search rather than using google or another alternative?

It just seems strange to me that the forum seems to be making work for itself. ;)

jamieoliver22
08-02-07, 13:53
What would be the point of using a search engine then if all the old posts were deleted from the database? You would only end up searching recent posts, which can be found quite easily anyway.. It would defeat the object.

Gambit37
08-02-07, 14:07
Exactly! You wouldn't have needed to implement the google search engine if your database was smaller in the first place. You're using a sledgehammer to crack a nut.

I'm just trying to get my head around what seem to be two conflicting policies.

1) You want to provide a search for people to be able to find old posts
2) You don't value old posts (as borne about by the 'no bumping' rule)

So why are you keeping the old posts at all?

jamieoliver22
08-02-07, 14:12
For one.. Its not my database..

I made this search so people could find old posts and hense they could find any old information that they needed. I didn't need to make the search, I did it out of my good will to try and help people but some people never seem to be happy. Sometimes, I don't know why I bother...

Gambit37
08-02-07, 17:27
Sorry, you misunderstand me, I'm not criticising the new search -- I think that's great and I already said so. By "You" I meant the forum as a whole, not you personally. :) I assumed, wrongly, that you work in conjunction with admins/mods to enhance the forums, I didn't realise you'd done it off your own back.

What I'm confused about is the point I made above. I guess it's not your call, so I'd be interested if other mods/admins could explain the apparent conflict of policies I outlined above.

Gambit37
10-02-07, 14:07
I guess no one else has noticed or cares! :( Can any of the admins explain the apparent conflict of policies I outlined 3 posts up?

in these arms
10-02-07, 16:04
It's just a Google search engine, only based on TRC and TRF, if members want some information about other stuff, they simply type in there needs and find them. Hence what Jamie said, it's free for anyone at anytime.

Gambit37
10-02-07, 16:08
Yes, I know that, but I changed the subject of the conversation a little. Sorry about that, I went off topic. I'll post my query to an admin as a PM, or maybe a mod can split that part of the conversation into a new thread?

jamieoliver22
10-02-07, 17:01
Why are you so bothered/worried anyway? PM Justin if you wish, but there is no need to make a new thread about it.

Gambit37
11-02-07, 16:28
Works fine for me in FireFox. What version of FF are you using and what extensions do you have installed?

Exactly what doesn't work anyway? Do you get an empty page, an error, what? What search terms are you using? Are you selecting the correct site (TRC or TRF)?

Can't really help unless you give exact information.

jamieoliver22
11-02-07, 20:04

Uhm, something relevant? Clearly, you've never had to file proper bug reports before. ;) Please tell us:
1) What operating System
2) What version of Firefox
3) What extensions you have installed in FF
4) From opening the search engine, EXACT steps to reproduce the problem
5) The exact output -- which you still haven't clearly identified. You said "no results are displayed" but does that mean you get a blank page, a page saying "No search results were found" or something else?

Posting a screenshot would help too.

jamieoliver22
13-02-07, 11:26
Well I am going to look through all the coding later and see if there is anything odd. I will also test the document on a number of Firefox installs on a number of operating systems. I will also be updating it slightly, nothing major.

I will keep you updated.

EDIT: Also, while I am here.. Go check out the new website: http://www.alpha-lite.co.uk/ :D

I work in web development and I know there's usually an answer for most problems. Your response may be how Microsoft see software development, but it ain't good enough for me! ;-) We'll fix this somehow!

I'm off to bed, but I'll think of some more ideas about what might be the problem.

You're into web design/development too? :D

I am currently working on a number of website at the moment, including my own website. I have been thinking about doing web design for a number of years as a part-time job or something.

My site I'm working on: http://www.alpha-lite.co.uk/
A clan site I am working on: http://www.alpha-lite.co.uk/aura/ (early stages)
A game development site I am working on: http://www.pewcrew.com

Ok, opinions people..

How do people feel about the layout of the search engine? I was considering changing it, but what do you think?

Also, if you have any features that you would like including, then please tell me and I will look into it :p

EDIT: New version released, check the original post for details.

Jamie.

Awesome, I love the new layout.

And I love the way you have defined the members name search, to make it search exactly for their posts, completely genius -cough- -runs away-

Thanks for the comments people ^_^

Just to clarify, can anyone please report to me if you are having any problems with the search engine, especially any problems you experience with Firefox (as a number of people have reported that the results don't display). If you find an error, please report it to me ASAP and tell me in as much detail as you can - I will then look into it and see about a solution.

Thanks again everyone for the continued support towards both this search engine and to the forums themselves.

Cheers,
Jamie.

I have created a new version - 2.7. It has a number of fixes, added an old post search, styled forms and general tweaks.

It will be released soon.

EDIT: It has now been released and has been uploaded. You can access via the same link on the first page.

I wonder if perhaps we could search for individual members' posts, and only show their posts in the search results?

Just making sure that this is child-proof: There's not a way that some random person could access Mature chat could they? I'm foreseeing a terrible chaotic disaster and many, many lawsuits ;):D...

Sorry about taking ages to reply, I haven't checked this thread for a while..

That's good :tmb:

Another question: Does it search closed threads?

And yes, the search engine will search through all closed posts as well. All private forums are not searched.

Also, if anyone has any ideas for a new version, I will see what I can do...

Ask google to let you make it a real search engine. That will be good.
@Jamie Lets hope a googlebot doesnt follow someone into a private forum.

I seriously doubt it somehow..

And a googlebot does not follow people. It counts as a guest account and no guest has access to private forums.
