Could someone explain the meaning of this word to me?

I found this in Wikipedia:

The Latin (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Latin) word aeon, also spelled eon or Šon, means "age," "forever," or "for eternity (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eternity)". It is derived from the koine Greek (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Koine_Greek) word αίών (aion), which at one point meant "age," "a period of existence" or "life". It has a similar meaning to the Sanskrit (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sanskrit) word kalpa (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kalpa_%28time_unit%29).

But in songs etc it seems to refer to a being or an entity

Aeon:

1) An indefinite or very long period of time.
2) (Astronomy & Geology) A unit of time equal to a thousand million years.
3) (Geology) A major division of geological time, subdivided into eras.
4) (Philosophy) (in Neoplatonism, Platonism, and Gnosticism) A power existing outside time and deriving from the supreme deity.

Number four is possibly it.

[Edited to fix some potentially funny typos.]

[Edited again: Wikipedia also mentions 'Aeons' as angel-like beings.]

Ah, must've missed that. Thanks :tmb:

The history of these beings is still vague to me. I guess they're not a part of any specific mythology, but rather some general word for cool winged thingies :D
