PLEASE DO NOT POST IN THIS OLD THREAD

Look at this poor guy, just at the enterance to the Lost Valley....

http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g293/greatchi/deadmanjoe1.jpg

Is this not the saddest picture in TR1 ? I think so.

What was his tale..
Was he an early explorer ? did he reach the Lost Valley and got a bite or two from a raptor before escaping, or did he just die before getting to the valley.

We will never know, how sad :(

PS ...... I dont know why I always wonder about Joe, theres plenty of skeletons lying about in TR1 , but he is the one I always feel sorry for the most :p

Yeah, I know. It seems strange that he died just outside of the valley with the raptors. Maybe he had a heart attack or something.

I think he was well placed by the designers. Out of reach of the raptors and T-Rex, my take on him is that he was injured in the valley below (by the raptors) and barely made his way up before he succumbed to his wounds. He didn't even get a chance to use his med-kit. His associates got chopped pretty quick though (Pete and Liz).

And thanks for bringing this topic forward The Great Chi! :)

I hope Deadman Joe returns in TR Anniversary, maybe he saw how amazing the valley was and could not take the sight and had a heart attack or maybe he saw his friends get munched upon by some hungry critters and decided to end his life, knowing there would be no way out.
Someone should write a fan-fic on his story. :D

Who knows, maybe we will see a flashback scene in Anniversary, maybe Joe will rise again as the Lost Valleys true boss, maybe all will be answered in;

Tomb Raider: Dead Mans Entrance! :D

:p
we can tell from his bone structure that he was quite an articulate man, modest and kind.
it also appears - from his posture - that he was rather comfortable in his last moments, perhaps even sleeping.

he seems to be the victim of a curry dish, known to haunt people.
he was probably a fan of chelsea FC.

Thinking about it, the dinosaurs must have been on some sort of crash-diet. A few hundred years in the Lost Valley with only three meals between them must have helped them lose at least a couple of pounds :D

Has no-one mentioned the traitor to the group, Deadman Phill?
The sinfull skeleton that is located near the cogs across the river?
He ran away when the others needed help, he stole their shotgun (the only means of defence they had!) and ran out of the lost valley looking for a way out the hellish tombs, he found the cogs and tried to activate them...didn't work bad luck for him he did not see the ledge and tripped over them causing his shotgun to fire into his stomach, he died in great pain....and wasted one shotgun shell :hea:

But it's not all bad, he did give Lara a second weapon...even if he didn't want to :jmp:

Either he really is a traitor or he got lost. What do you think happened?
It'd be funny if he was hundreds of years old...and he had a shotgun :jmp:

Someone needs to write the entire tale of the expedition that went bad. We need to know the tale of Joe, Pete, Liz, Fred and Phil. Who were they, and why did Phil abandon his mates?

I don't think they're 100 + years old. Consider that conditions in the Lost Valley are a lot warmer and more tropical than in the caves. Bodies decay pretty rapidly in conditions like that. And guys, don't forget the skeletons in the wolf pit in Qualopec's tomb; they made it farther than anyone else.

Obviously, some people had heard of Qualopec's tomb before and made the attempt to retrieve the Scion (?) earlier. Natla did say in the opening FMV that the tomb was unfound, so Lara was undoubtedly the first person find it and return.

Now those wolves and bears on the other hand . . . they must have been imported.

Jo269976
29-01-07, 21:29
why did Phil abandon his mates?

Good question Eddie, the answer I beleive is that he was in for the Scion all for himself, he would need their help to reach the Tomb Of Qualopec and when the treasure was found he'd deal with those "liabilites" so therefore once the others were out of the way he would be rich, rich I tells you! :D

...Either that or he has Scalyphobia (A fear of T-Rexes and other dinosaurs) :D

And yes, I would like to see the flashback to what happened, maybe when Lara picks up the first Scion piece she will see what happened in a flashback...funny how in the original she nver experienced a flashabck in the Tomb Of Qualopec when she first picked one of the three Scion pieces.

I'd also lke the chance to play the quest as a little mini-game seeing what happened whilst experiencing it! :jmp:

Maybe he fought a few of the raptors off but got injured, so he retreated back up to the rocks and bled to death. Or he was injured by those wolves before you get to the entrance? :)

Well first you need to know who these people are, then we'll get to the story:

Joe, the young tag-along best friend of Pete. He’s bright-eyed, eager to please, but is just a little socially awkward.

Pete, a mineralogist hired by Fred and Phil to help excavate a supposed diamond mine.

Liz, a botanist that accompanies the party to this uncharted region hoping to collect samples of new plants to use to find cures for diseases.

Fred, a librarian who read about a city in Peru that had some sort of treasure. He misinterpreted the texts and thought that it was a diamond mine [when in fact it was the Scion, but sadly this team will not discover that.]

Phil, an experienced spelunker and world traveler. He talks Fred into pursuing the diamond mines in hopes that he could get rich off of the find. When they discover that there is no mine at all, Phil gets a little ****ed off.

Here's what happened:
So the group was moving through the quiet valley. Pete is watching the walls, trying to find anything that resembles rough diamonds. Liz is collecting samples of plants. Joe, young and eager to help, tries to help Liz gather specimens. She gets annoyed with him and tells him to go bother someone else. He moves over to Fred and starts talking to him about the treasure. Fred, broken hearted that he was wrong about the mine, asks Joe to leave him alone. So Joe starts asking Phil about some of his adventures. Phil, angry that the mines are not there and angry especially at Fred, tells Joe to **** off. Pete says “Joe, you’re just getting in everybody’s way. Why don’t you wait for us over there!”

So Joe, exiled from the others, goes to wait at the entrance to the valley. He is sad that no one wants to be friends with him. Suddenly, people start screaming. He runs back. Liz was plucking a flower when a raptor leapt out from the ferns and pinned her to the ground. Phil backs away, scared out of his mind. “Shoot it, shoot it!!” Pete screams, but Phil chickens out and starts running away. The raptor starts to chase the running man. Phil notices it and knocks Fred over. The raptor jumps on Fred instead. Joe, terrified, suddenly recalls that Phil is the one carrying their first aid kit and their only weapon. He runs with him, “Stop, Phil! Stop! You have to help us!”

But Phil just keeps running. Joe grabs onto Phil’s pack, in which their fist aid kit is, “Wait, we need you.” Phil turns and tries to swat Joe away. Meanwhile, the raptor has killed Fred and is chasing Pete now. “Run Joe!!” Pete screams out to his friend.

Joe will not let go of Phil. He knows that Phil is the only one that could kill the raptor. They tussle all the way to the entrance of the valley, when Joe puts his foot down “Now stop that! We have to save them. You have the gun. Come on.” “Let go of me you little twerp!” “NO!”

KABOOM!!

Joe falls lifeless to the floor, his clenched fingers latched tightly onto Phil’s health pack. Phil stands there dumbstruck as he realizes that he just shot Joe to get the kid off of him. More raptors squeal and shout as they kill the rest of the team.

Liz rolls over, her own blood pooling beneath her. “F… Fred…!” she calls out, reaching to her companion. A second raptor leaps from the bushes and fineshes her off.

Pete runs frantically from the raptor, hearing its claws tear trough the grass as it comes closer. Two more beasts emerge from the trees ahead, and, surrounded, Pete succumbs to the claws and teeth of the vicious beasts.

Phil, having escaped, moved quickly as he tries to find a new way out. His heart is racing and his mind can not focus. He didn’t even notice the ledge that he tripped over. The blow was enough to trigger the shotgun, which fired into his own stomach. Phil lurched over and died a painful death at his own foolish mistake [wasting a shotgun shell!!!].

Other than digging up a 6 month old thread, it's not a bad story - probably better suited to fan fiction, but how do you shoot yourself in the stomach accidentally with a shotgun?
Oh, and and now I also know the meaning of spelunker!

Main Entry: spe·lunk·er
Pronunciation: spi-'l&[ng]-k&r, 'spE-"
Function: noun
Etymology: Latin spelunca cave, from Greek spElynx; akin to Greek spElaion cave
: one who makes a hobby of exploring and studying caves

And as far as the wasted shotgun shell goes, there's plenty more.

I am glad to see Deadman Joe ressurected again (pun intended :D)

I mean 'Deadman Joe' is one of those famous characters of the Tomb Raider series that makes the game interesting. He may only be in the minor league, compaired to Bacon Lara and Charlie Catfish, but he makes tomb raiding all the better, with his mysterious death :p
