Legend notwithstanding, in all of the games that I have played since the 80's, I have a system of traveling/searching in the environment. I always go left, left, left. Most are taught to make right turns (as if in a maze). Since I believe that the developer planned for the right turn (or right door, etc) over the left, I usually get a different experience playing the game than some. In some games like Oblivion for instance, the environment is a world so usually I just revel in the freedom of limitless movement and wander in no particular fashion.

Anyone else care to share their strategies or methods in this regard?

I used the same strategy in one of those recreational maze places about 15 years ago. Went in the exit, had an "unplanned" experience.

Interesting, although I believe it wouldn't have made it any easier or more difficult. Just different.

Get any strange looks going in?

if i enter a big chamber in TR, i always skirt around the room to the left.

or if i come to a t-junction, i always go left first.

is that what you mean?

if i come back to the same point, i know where i went before

Precisely. Whenever there is an option such as multiple doors or multiple paths i always start with the left one. Or in the case of a laege room I stay left until I circumnavigate it.

Get to a big room, draw weapons and proceed to the middle. Get ready to fight, run or reload!
With a maze I go the way I feel on the day, although there's not many I can't remember as I go along nowadays. The straight path out may miss pickups or secrets so its always good to explore, although frustrating if you can't find your way back or out. RX Tech mines, the first time through, springs to mind here.

Same here. Go to a big area with the weapons ready, shoot anything that moves and then explore in peace. Repeat in the next area.

With a maze I usually go clockwise. If I get to a dead end I backtrack untill I can keep going clockwise again. In some games I leave a trace in form of bullet holes on the walls so I know I was already there (complicated mazes). Unfortunatelly that's not possible in all the games since the graphics are being "refreshed" after you re-enter the same area.

Fascinating. I have used that technique in games when I already know whats there. I make my goal to live at all costs (not the attitude of "Oh well, I'll just reload), so therefore I normally take it easy and try and go slow.

I'm curious, how would/did you handle Thief?

That certainly works for the hedge maze in Croft Manor in TR3... :pi:

Interesting topic.

I'm the same with going left always. Whenever I come across two paths, I don't even stop to think, I just run left. I've always done it that way for all games.

Now, the only time I -don't- go left, is when it looks like left is the main path, then I'd choose to go the less obvious way incase it's too a secret.

Also, if I ever feel like I've explored everything in a level but still haven't found the exit or whatever, I run to the beginning (or as much to the beginning as possible) and pretend I'm doing the level over. Normally that brings me to a door I now have the key for, or a passageway that was previously blocked but actions during the level have now opened it.

It depends, if there is a room and you can go left or right I just pick one, but if you can go through a door in front of you and left (or right) I always go for left because I expect the left room to have something extra (maybe a secret, or a key that I will need later on in that same level) and the door in the front will lead me further in the level.

I usually switch left to right and reverse, get desoriented, sniff around like a dog till i get the picture of the map. In labyrinths i usually start to the right till i can't go further, left then straight forward till i can't get further then left to try to return where i came from.
