I wanted this to be a poll. Why can't we post polls? It's not fair, I want to post polls!

Anyway, there are lots of different versions of Tomb Raider. Which one do you like best?

The list:
-PS1
-Saturn
-PC
-N-Gage
-Pocket PC
-Tomb Raider 1 - Revised by Daoine Sidhe or however you spell that.

Personally, I believe that the PS1 version is the best, and definitive Tomb Raider 1. It had the best graphics - the save crystals and gold Lara statue reflected their surroundings - how did they do that in 1996? And it had music, unlike the PC version. It's a real joy to be able to just pop the CD in and play, rather than having to download hundreds of programs and patches like with the PC version.

My second favourite is Tomb Raider 1 - Revised, because (and no offence intended to Mr. Sidhe) it's hilarious, because nothing works! When the T-Rex kills Lara, it doesn't grab her in his mouth and throw her around, she just stands there! And when Lara turns to gold, she just disappears! Although, I probably shouldn't make fun of it - Level Editor can be very hard to work with and it's amazing that he had the patience to complete the project.

The PC version is my least favourite, because there's no music and it's really hard to get it to work in XP.

And I haven't played the Saturn, N-Gage and Pocket PC versions.

This would not be a poll about which you prefer, more like which one you played it on. Most probably only played it on one of them. How would one know about all the versions unless they actually played them all?

I already asked a more pointed question about this general topic before in TRA.

Well l played the PS1 version for years when l first got it, but when l went to replay it last year noticed how bad the graphics were for the first time, compared to the others. l now play it on PC and it looks fantastic, so l only play it on the PC now :D

I think the PC version, but that's as much because I played that first and for longest as anything else. The PS1 version came after and I loved that too.

can you not include the glidos version, or John Capons vision of it?

JC's version is the best TR1 for me

I played the ps1 version only, but from what i've seen the pc version has better graphics.

PC version, better graphics with Glidos/DGVoodoo (though the PS version is alright with the PS2 texture smoothing turned on) and, with Glidos, high-detail textures and a restored soundtrack at sometime or other.

I've only played it on PlayStation so far, but I actually have the Gold version on PC coming in the mail tomorrow. I guess then I'll be right to judge! :D

Ahh, a tough one!

I have both the PS and PC version. So I'll highlight the pros of both

PC
+Better in-game graphics
+Better controls (My opinion, some prefer gamepad)
+Can save anywhere
+Water doesn't have that blue affect (Personal preference, I think the water looks much more realistic without the PS blue effect)
+No loading times!
+Better credit screens
+Can play Unfinished Business!
+Can create your own levels for it, and play levels of others (With the unofficial editor)

PS
+Much easier to play in modern times. Works on both Playstation 2 and 3 without a glitch!
+Brilliant music which makes some scenes so much more memorable
+Save crystals (Contradicts what I said about the PC's saves, but admittedly, it's NICE being forced not to save every 30 seconds like on PC)
+FMV quality is much better.

Now, after looking at that, you'd think I prefer the PC version. Well, in most cases, I ALWAYS prefer the PC versions of games. But in this case, I actually prefer the PlayStation version. Purely because of the music. It gives you the -complete- Tomb Raider experience. Also, if I pop my Playstation disc into my computer, and use an emulator, I am then able to play the AMAZINGLY BRILLIANT..

PERSONAL PLAY COMPUTER STATION version!! Or PPCS (Copyright) :D

You can beef the graphics right up to PC version quality, though with a few clipping errors still (but we can look over that!). You can play with the keyboard OR your gamepad. You can save anywhere (with save states) OR choose to just use the crystals. You get all the music!

Basically, -that- is how I play Tomb Raider I :)

Though I use the PC version with Glidos for Unfinished Business, which is fine as Unfinished Business was never designed with extra music, and never had FMVs so it doesn't matter if FMVs don't work with XP.

:)

EDIT:
I'd just like to say to all you PC gamers, of which I am most definitely one: I HIGHLY recommend buying the PlayStation version. It's amazing how much trouble you save by avoiding messing around with XP. I got the PlayStation version PURELY because I could not get TR1 running acceptably on XP. Sure, Glidos works, but the FMVs are messed up :( Even though I have a playstation, you don't need one... just get an original copy of the game for playstation and use an emulator. You'll never go back, I assure you.

PC version.
BECAUSE of the lack of the PSx added music.
Because of that, to me, the PC version feels like a real adventure, PSx version feels like a theater-play.

I agree wholeheartedly. I said the same thing earlier today, except I said like a movie/film.

I prefer the pc version of tomb raider.

1.It has better grathics then the ps version{although mostely everything where still polygonal effects}

2.The water effects were much better,it looked clear like in real life

3.You could save anywhere!

4.There where extra levels to it!

I've only played Tomb Raider on PC and PS1. They're both pretty similar IMO but my favorite verion is probably PS1.

I still play TR1 on PS1, but I want it for PC. I've seen the graphic difference and it's amazingly high.

You'll end up missing the music :( Well, you might not. A few others here prefer NOT having music.

Though you can use an emulator and achieve excellent graphics quality with your PS1 version. Then you can get great graphics AND the music. It's also easier to run than trying to get TR1 PC working with XP fully (FMVs and all)

I'm with Endow on this one. I have both Saturn and PC. It's true the graphics are better on the PC and things work better (cistern secret, handstand move, etc).

But I just can't get over the loss of music on PC, so the Saturn version wins for me. Also I prefer the "save game crystal" system. It adds to the challenge (esp on the Saturn where there are less crystals).

I suppose the ultimate compromise is the PS version (which I have never played) - with crystals and music and good graphics and no Saturn "quirks". But I hate that 4-way d-pad on the PS so I'd have to get over that.....besides I dont have a PS so it's all a bit Academic!

I say Saturn.

You can add bilinear filtering (Where it smooths the textures) on playstation1 games when played on your playstation2 :)

I forgot quite how to do it.... but if you go into options on your playstation 2, when you highlight one of the version numbers, you see a small triangle in the corner to access more options. If you press triangle, you can then add two extra things to playstation1 games. Smooth textures and faster CD loading (I wouldnt recommend the faster CD loading option as it messes up some games).

Still doesn't help make the resolution as good as PC though. :)

Dug. I'm having a tough time emulating TR. Could you recommend an emulator, plugins, configuration combination that's worked for you? I am running XP SP1. P4 2.8 1gig ATI 9600 AIW.

The smoothing on the PS2 isn't that great, but I miss the full music on the PC.

Thanx.

Edit: NM, I got it. I'm going to stick with PC and dgvoodoo though. I already played it on the PS, and the PC still looks a bit better. I'm used to no triggered music now.

XP? See this page http://www.tombraiderchronicles.com/tr1/faq.html Links seem to be borked so use the link on this page: http://www.tombraiderchronicles.com/windowsxp.html ("Advanced Tomb Raider Installer")

The only other thing you'll need is VDMsound: http://vogons.zetafleet.com/viewtopic.php?t=2071

Personally I like more the TR version in PC than any other platform because of the power of the pc although the PS1 version of TR1 is better than in PC because of the lack of music, beside that I like the PC version.

Is it possible to patch the PC version to have music?

12-02-07, 22:44
It's possible to fix (or work-around) the broken audio tracks on the sold out version. The project to bring the PS triggered environmental tracks to the PC (via Glidos) is incomplete and seems to be stalled (apparently the process is very tedious).

TR I for the PS, definitely. The graphics don't matter, because you can use the "texture mapping" feature on the PS2, which makes the game look like it's on the PC. All I have to do is put in the disc and play, I don't have to download programs and fiddle around with them. :)

I first played TR on my Saturn, but bought a ps2 because tr2 never came out for the saturn. The only difference in the two versions, from what i can remember was that in the saturn, Lara has a full pony tail and round boobs, in the PSone Lara doesn't have a full pony tail, it cuts off from where her hair tie is, and she has triangle boobs. Oh and another thing I forgot the loading screens for Lara's home were different.

while its a great improvement, its still nowhere near as sharp as the PC version. Texture smoothing gets rid of blocky textures, but still the "shimmering" and "jaggedness" remain.

Well, I only have the PlayStation version but I've played the PC version and with the smooth texture mapping and fast disc speed on the PS2 it looks alot like the PC, and when Lara turns to gold in Palace Midas on the PlayStation it looks shiny and refletive but in the PC it just looks like flat yellow color, so definetly the PlayStation version! :D

I guess I'm the only one that only played TR on N-Gage :)
The only problems are that there is no music and no FMV, also in the ingame cinematics they don't talk, it's all by subtitles
The controls fit so wonderfully and it has auto-run :D
Definitly one of the best N-gage games if not the best

I use a combo USB adapter and a GameCube controller (with JoyToKey) to play TR on PC. The same adapter has plugs for Dreamcast and PS/PS2. TR:TLA really shouldn't be missed. (I and II Gold are also great.)
