I've noticed that my TR1 cover says:
Developed by Core Design ltd.
Published by Core Design ltd.
but it says too:
©Core Design Ltd. 1996
(p)Eidos Interactive Ltd. 1996
I don't really understand this :p
was it a fault? or DID Core publish TR1?
(I'll check for a screenshot from the cover, I will edit my post)

Wow, that's weird. No wonder Eidos fired Core. They were taking all the credit! *ba-dum-tshh*

Anyway, I read it also here in Italy, where TR was supposedly translated and published by Leader.

oopsy:whi:
Pretty wierd, Maybe Eidos published it in other countries? and Leader SpA in Italy? or do you see Eidos too?
Eidos had already brought Core Design before Tomb Raider was released Core owned the copyright and trademark, Eidos also owned the copyright and published the games. Perhaps Core was the publisher for the Tomb Raider 1 playstation version. Although l think it more likely it is a mistake

I think it's a mistake too, but maybe you are right about that Core published TR1 for PS1
This thread nudged me into checking out the timing of events back then and I'm glad that I did. The best one can say about Eidos is that they are incompetent control freaks.
From wiki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tomb_Raider). Not the most authoritative, but...
Preliminary work on Tomb Raider commenced in 1993, but it was not until November 1996 that the game actually saw the light of day as a retail product. The title was crafted by Core Design of Europe, which took 18 months to develop it.
and from the Core Design entry at Moby Games (http://www.mobygames.com/company/core-design-ltd)
In 1993/94 games such as Thunderhawk, Soulstar, Battlecorps, BC Racers and Bubba 'n' Stix kept the Core name in the upper reaches of software charts all around the world. The team was also flooded with awards voted on by the specialist press throughout Europe and the US. At the end of 1994 Core was acquired by the CentreGold group, comprising the publisher US Gold and distributor CentreSoft. CentreGold agreed however, that Core should be left alone to operate autonomously and all concerned reaped the rewards in 1995 with the release of four new hit games including Firestorm: Thunderhawk 2, a ground-breaking arcade/action title which has clocked up sales of over 200,000 in Europe to date.
In March 1996, the Eidos group acquired CentreGold. Once again it was decided that Core should continue to run independently - but this time with the financial and technical backing of a leading edge global software company. The year ended with the release of Core's most successful title so far, Tomb Raider. The game received unprecedented praise from the press and has sold over one and a half million copies to date.
So there you have it. Eidos deserves none of the credit for the first Tomb Raider, except for some backing money (probably unnecessary, Core were successful back then) and maybe as joint publishers. In fact, their hands-off approach regarding Core Design probably was a contributory factor to the game's quality. I mean, happy workers work but grumpy workers grumble!
It was only after Eidos realised just how big Tomb Raider had become that they stepped in and began micromanaging the franchise to death, culminating with the Angel of Darkness debacle, as described at Tomb Raider Chronicles. (http://www.tombraiderchronicles.com/headlines1424.html)
I checked on my TR1 cover, too, and I found out that Core had copyrights on the game itself and on its publishing in general. At the end of the credits is added that the game is "Published in Italy by Leader SpA". :)
