When Amazon UK announced pre-orders for the Nintendo Wii back on November 21, the offer closed within ten minutes (http://uk.gamespot.com/news/6162141.html) as consumers snapped up the offer.
The PlayStation 3, which was launched in Japan on November 11, 2006, and in the US on November 17, was delayed until March in Europe due to problems with production of its blue laser diodes (http://uk.gamespot.com/news/6157145.html). Pre-orders for Brits have been available for some time, with some high street stores choosing to offer the console for pre-order (http://uk.gamespot.com/news/6162641.html) back in December--although with no guarantees.
This week saw Sony dish out its official allocations to retailers, and some, including Play.com and Amazon UK, are guaranteeing all their pre-order customers a console on the launch day.
However, unlike the Wii, or previous UK console launches including the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 2, the PlayStation 3 is still available to buy almost a week after becoming available.
The marketing director of specialist video game retailer Game, Anna Macario, commented, "Game has had a really good response to their pre-order campaign for the forthcoming PlayStation 3 console, both in-store and online...we are receiving more pre-orders every day. We are still currently guaranteeing anyone who pre-orders the console that it will be available for collection in the launch period both in-store and online. However, with any high demand hardware people shouldn't wait to pre-order their console as units won’t be around for much longer."
Play.com's head games buyer, Gian Luzio, commented that demand for the PS3 on its site has been phenomenal. He said, "The Sony PS3 has pre-ordered six times more than the Xbox 360 in this period before launch, and 15 times more than the Wii. So it's the most pre-ordered console yet."

Nope, me either. It's a huge fan boy buy (I think). :p

And people will say Sony will fail with their PS3. Playstation's fanbase is just too big to fail.

I'm not surprised. All the Sony fanboys (which there is a lot of in this country) are getting in with the pre-orders pretty quickly.

Not necessarily, I think it's the fact that people think the PS3 is some amazing supercomputer. And then they will realize it's just like the Xbox 360 but with different games, different look and different price.

the point of any console is to have different games, different look...and arguably different price.

point being too many folks have deemed the PS3 a failure just because of price, people say it sucks just because of price....like wtf!!!!!!

IMO, a console can only suck if the games are naff beyond belief and the machine itself is built to a poor standard............also, i've seen a fair few people on here totally flame the PS3 and then say "i'll get one when it's cheaper" you either like the machine or you don't, why diss it one minute then say i'll get one later...ah! hypocrite's is the word i'm looking for

NOTE:just a rant Mad Tony not a personal dig at you or your post btw :jmp:

True the PS3 can't be called a failure yet... but pre-orders cannot deem it a success either. A lot of folks may not pick up their pre-orders; people change their minds on that a lot of the time too. Only long-term sales will show success/failure. In this case success/failure is only relative to what MS and Nintendo do, because I think all 3 will do well.

good post,

all 3 will indeed do well, why? because they all have something to offer it's fan base or swing buyers, but i do think the Wii will make most gains in the long run simply due to it's low price...........who knows how it's all going to shape up truth be told :(

I'm not going to buy the PS3 until the games I like to play on it are close to release. To be honest I don't have the cash right now. Thanks for the info Lara Lover. :tmb:

If/ when I do buy it - I'll be buying it in Tesco.

10% discount:D I work there - 4 years this october!

No other companies (Game/ Virgin/ HMV/ Gamestop) even offer a hardware discount!

I got my Wii for £161.00:D

According to the latest NPD TRST data, the Wii sold through 70% more systems than any other system in its first January in the past decade. In the month of January Nintendo sold 435,000 Wii's, Microsoft sold 294,000 Xbox 360s, and Sony sold 243,000 PlayStation 3s.

These sales figures for January came from Gameinformer. The Wii is definately having a very good launch sales. The worrisome thing for Sony is that they were out sold by the XBox360 which is at least a year older. Sony missed their sales target for 2006 by 25%. Now the UK is a big PS2 market so maybe PS3 sales there will turn things around but an annoucement by a vendor that they still have preorders available is not hopeful.

I ordered Wii from them, months before it was due out. I think i might still be waiting for it, if i had not been VERY lucky on the John Lewis website one morning when they had it in stock. They were still trying to meet preorder demand, when sites like John Lewis and Amazon, had long sinced fulfilled their preorders, and were taking orders for 'in stock' only. They seemed to have been left behind in terms of supply, or took far too many pre-orders, more than they could cope with, one of the two.

Trust me, unless you are one of the VERY first people to pre-order there, you will be looking at 'awaiting stock' as your order status, for weeks on end while other people who have not even pre-ordered, are playing theirs, and even those who pre-ordered just weeks before in a shop, already have theirs.

It is just the price which is putting me off. £430 with nothing.

If we all hold back Sony will be forced to drop the PS3 price substantially. They can't afford to let the X360 get a major toe-hold into their share of the market with this generation of consoles...

The prices will fall after they'd creamed off as much money as possible from the "early adopters".

Personally I think it'll happen quite quickly as they need to get the machines in houses fast in order to provide a "sales base" for the non-exlusive PS3 versions of games hitting the market.
