:( Not such a fantastic name for the much anticipated debut game of Man Croft Article. (http://uk.ps3.ign.com/articles/762/762270p1.html)

http://ps3media.ign.com/ps3/image/article/706/706003/jASonRubindog2_1147156498.jpg

Previous threads are numerous so I narrowed it down to one with the most information [Link] (http://www.tombraiderforums.com/archive/index.php/t-72438.html) Find more here. (http://www.tombraiderforums.com/googlesearch.php?id=forums&cx=015587120907602638557%3Axajgzgx311q&q=Naughty+dog&cof=FORID%3A11#937)

It's a real bother to me, as the TR community goes, we get a lot of media on games that are in the works but unfortunately other games and their communities or at least Man Croft's does not have such an open source of media. Which makes go ga-ga when I see such an exciting game. The media that has been released, only shows much shooting and punching, when really I wanted to see more Larry running around in temples and waking thousand year old, dormant, puzzles :D

http://ps3media.ign.com/ps3/image/article/706/706003/jASonRubindog_1147156415.jpg

I still speculate if the stills are in game because of the slightly plasticy feel to it all as if it was walking and breathing render.

Either way, I simply can not wait for more media :jmp: So what do you think of the name? Do you think maybe we could develop a cult for the poor neglected fellow? :D :wve:

The name's ok, I love the 'Uncharted' part - I'm not in love with the 'Drake's fortune' bit though ;)

Has it been said that it'll be a puzzle game? I was just expecting full on action - much like a 3rd person FarCry.

Not sure to be honest, I should skim articles and check. I really hope they're will be puzzles though in the developers' previous game have offered a lot of combat compensated by some nice puzzle configuring and lots of exploring so we can expect at least a small amount of puzzles :D

I agree here too, Riv. From the moment I first saw this game, my instant thought was 'Far Cry in 3rd person', and I still believe that that's more like the direction it will be taking. That's in no way a bad thing (I loved Far Cry, even though it only just about ran on my PC) but I think anyone expecting an XY-chromosome alternative to Lara is going to be disappointed. I'm not expecting puzzles to play a huge part in the action, at least not in the TR sense. I'm definitely going to keep an eye on this game though, it looks like it could be great :)

I wouldn't be dissapointed if puzzle action was not part of the game as his freestyle interaction with the enviroment looks so bloody fun and so do the fire fights and fisty cuffs :jmp:

Me feelings exactly Ace!
I'll play it because yes - it does look a bit tomb raidery - but because of the lush looking environments, the setting in the Bermuda Triangle (nearly wrote Area 51 then :D ) and that big TR6esque superjump he does in the trailer! (I'm easily pleased on some levels..)

It's a PS3 exclusive and if I remember correctly, being developed by SCEA, so don't expect any ports. No real release date has been released so far to my knowledge.

Edit: Heh, was wrong there... it's being developed by Naughty Dog but that company is owned by Sony so, still, don't expect any ports.

This game looks quite drool-worthy, be it a shooter or puzzle-adventure game. I look forward to shuffling Mr.Nathan Drake about the jungle...(or whereever else he ends up...)

there was a good interview IGN did last year with ND where it was described as an action adventure with both action AND puzzle solving.:)

"IGN: What sort of game is it anyway? Our Initial impressions here is that it looks to be a cross between Tomb Raider and Resident Evil 4 with a heavy emphasis on action? Lenny Croft?

Wells: Sticking with Naughty Dog tradition, this is a third-person action adventure game with heavily story-based gameplay. There will obviously be a lot of traversal mechanics, two-fisted brawling, gunplay, and puzzle solving. We're trying to evoke the mood and emotions from a classic pulp adventure, but give it a modern day twist so you can expect a lot of dramatic stunts and exciting cliff-hanging moments."

So it will have puzzle solving, I love the sound of a classic pulp adventure :jmp:

In the trailer it mentions the hunter becoming the hunted? I wonder how the hunters found about the treasure and if they have other motives to get rid of him? Damn I want more information :cln:

Is this thread old enough for this to be called a bump? in that case, sorry, please hit me with a stick :D

this game looks very awesome IMO. I don't really see why some people call it a total TR ripoff, the only similarities i see are the jungle (which is not a TR exclusive place IMO) and the fact that the main character is a treasure hunter...

"After hearing about the game's cinematic story, seeing the technology that backs up the exciting plotline, and playing the game for ourselves, we're sure about one thing. This is one title that should give hold-outs against the pricey PS3 a reason to pause and look again."

-They want an emotional story, and so far there's fifty minutes of cinematics.

-They have an awesome animation scheme that allows for over 1,200 different unique ways of doings things like taking cover. There's nine screens of Drake taking cover behind a pillar...all of them completely different stances. Freaking awesome. (the final game will have 3,000)

-Sixaxis allows for some tilting moments, like crossing a narrow log and balancing, Kratos-style.

-more on the unique animations: if Drake is running across an open field, he will visibly become more and more out of breath, his entire body shaking if he runs enough. His face will show all these emotions as well.

-Everything in the jungle shifts and sways, with dynamic shadowing, and high-dynamic range lighting.

-soundtrack is also dynamic

Much thanks Nick. What size were the original scans? If they're larger than what you have on photobucket, could you re-upload the bigger ones to ************? No big deal either way, but it would be much easier reading the article and seeing the pics.

This looks like a very ambitious game. I may have to break down and get a PS3 if this game is as good as it looks. Exciting times ahead for the action-adventure genre with TRA, TR8, Indiana Jones and Uncharted coming out over the next year or two.

There's no chance this one will come to the 360 huh? :D

Seriously though, this is the only PS3 game I want to play - it looks beautiful and the guy you play as seems really cool but he's no Indy though ;)

Wonder what kinda gameplay features it'll have, one things for certain is that the combat looks a hell of alot better than TRL - but I've always wanted Lara's combat to play just like Drake's in the trailer, shame it'll never happen

Is it going to be like Far Cry where there's a massive, beautiful paradise Islands briming with beaches, jungles, caves and ruins - letting you choose where to go and what to do because if so this is like the Tomb Raider game I've always wanted - too bad it's not TR it's Uncharted: Drake's Fortune - Pay attention Crystal Dynamics this games you're biggest competition! :)
Well I would say Assassin's Creed is there biggest competition but TR will never beat that game, no matter what CD pull out'a there next gen bag o' tricks :D

Still Drake's games looking mighty fine, can't wait to see how it shapes up! :)

Looks like Lara is getting some serious competition. Amazing trailer and that part in the tomb with the flashlight, just stunning.

I am curious to see how they'll make this game fun without using a jump button, it works for Zelda games.. but it's not something I would like to see in a game like this.

This trailer makes me glad I own a PS3.

I still can't get over how amazing this game play is! The animations need to be a bit slower and more fluid if they can but wow, Tomb Raider eat your heart out :jmp:

This game is truly stunning! But keep in mind--all those making comparisons to Tomb Raider--this is a brand new I.P. made from the ground up for brand new hardware. Tomb Raider suffers from a past, and from all the many pre-conceptions that Tomb Raider fans have for the series. It is still tied to old hardware and old entrenched ideas to some extent. So of course it stands no chance of being as fresh and innovative as Drakes Fortune! I'd love for Tomb Raider to make such a leap forward but I think people would be more critical of every little thing if it was Lara moving around instead of this guy!

It gives you an idea of what TR8 can and should look like. It seems to have a lot of the same moves we are seeing in TRL and TRA, ie the wall run, side jumping from ledge to ledge, etc. It also has some of the combat moves form GRAW2 such as taking cover against walls. Has a tentative launch data be announced?

I just watched the trailer and dev interviews the other day there and I'm totally in love with this game, it's going to be so freakin' awesome - if there's one game I think folk should buy the PS3 for it's Uncharted Drakes Fortune! :jmp:

This is a game that looks fun to play, it'll be instantly enjoyable for anyone and is a completely over the top, non-stop action yarn, but in a stylish way - plus it's amazingly gorgeous to boot!!! :D

Lara may finally have some serious competition! :yah:

One thing to note about your post Samsdad, Uncharted is a PS3 only game - with TR8 being developed across both MS and Sonys next gen systems, I doubt TR8 will look as incredible as Drakes game - still it'll look better than Legend for the 360... or at least I hope it does ;)

Ditto. Lara's such an icon, every little thing she does is put into the spotlight, making rather critical every acclaim or critique she gets.

EDIT. To be honest, I think that Drake's Fortune actually suffers from lack of originality in its concept. Its features may be innovative, but the things that you actually see ONSCREEN are things that gamers have been acquainted with thoroughly in the past. Godfather for the wall-cover, GTA for free-roaming, and Tomb Raider for virtually all the acrobatic moves. Then again, the aforementioned games also borrowed from other games.

I agree. Mainly the way he grabs "small" rocks on the walls remind me of PoP" The wall run seems to be easier to do than in tomb raider.

Personally I think this game will suffer from a Tomb raider legend effect. So much actions sequences and not enough platforming/exploring would create linear levels. Once I see a demo of this game I'll look into this game.

Come on guys! We are tomb raider fans! This uncharted game will be no match for lara's iconic popularity, puzzles, MANOR, exploring, signature moves, and lara's wardrobe.

That statement is from a Sony developer of a PS3 exclusive game. Of course he would say that! According to IGN the story mode is 10-12 hours long. So we're still getting a short game even with the storage space of blu-ray.

Everything about this game sounds a lot like Legend... yes, with some great gameplay innovations and such, but still a very linear and action-heavy, somewhat scripted, game experience. Thanks for the article. The pictures look gorgeous although I prefer him with a red top. :)

-----
I found this interesting in the review:

Quite whether that's actually going to be possible though at the moment is unclear. While Lara is practically synonymous with vast, labyrinthine levels, Drake's trek from his landing spot to the wreckage of his plane in the early build we played is a strictly linear affair. Hopefully things will open out in later levels but, currently, there's something disappointingly old-school about your progress. Despite, expansive vistas and promise of all manner of explorable nooks and crannies in amongst the gorgeously lush terrain, you're essentially forced along one narrow jungle corridor, with fallen logs and boulders determined to spoil your fun.
An appreciation for once of labyrinthe style gameplay v. corridor running in the gaming press. *faints*

I think having this competition against TR could have a big impact on TR for us. It could refocus developers (on both sides) minds on what it is/isn't that makes games like TR great. When there is only 1 TR and Lara Croft, it's natural to assume that she plays a bigger role than she does (or vice versa). Having two franchises allows the options to be explored more. Eidos get to see the results of experimenting with the gameplay (through Drake's Fortune) without taking any risks directly themselves.

I think it could be good for us.

They copied Legend and Anniversary a lot ! But I think it will do the exact same thing that happen with St-Rows vs Grand Theft Auto, St-Rows copied almost 90% of GTA, and GTA was set to be release 1 year later, and now we can see who's the best : GTA.

So maybe everybody will play this game saying : Better than TR, and than, 1 year later, Lara will be back better than never ! :jmp:

... yesI think CD and Eidos may actually be pushed to make the next TR title better than Uncharted...

Yes that is exactly what I was thinking when I watched those vids in the article link you posted. I was noting some of the smoothness in his moves that Lara could benefit from having. Having something similar breathing down EIDOS's back I think can only help.

The fighting system looks very cool which I would not mind seeing something like in TR games. But there was to much of it. The vids almost all showed the fighting and very little climbing, jumping. Maybe that is what they are going to use to separate it from TR. If so that could sway many gamers from TR me thinks. There are tons of third person fighting game fans out there that love that action. Something like TRA would be to slow for most of them I am thinking so ... given the choice..., It will be a tough call and a double edge sword for EIDOS.

I am interested to see where this game goes though as well as Assassin's Creed which also seems like it has some PoP gameplay and thus TR as well.

CD could actually learn alot from this game. :tmb:

I love it, but unfortunately I doubt I'll buy a PS3.

Yeah that is where I stand as well. I use the PC for most games. So I have a tough time justifying a next-gen console purchase for just a handful of games, when I could beef up my PC to the nth degree for the same amount of money and use it for more things. GeForce 8800 Ultra anyone?:tea: mmm yummy:p

I know the game play is not anything like Far Cry but I sure hope it's locales are more diverse. As pretty as that game was the scenery got old fast.

I'm really worried about the controls, they look really bad. I'm not sure if naughty dog understands that a more realistic looking game needs better controls than that of Jak & Daxter (which were good for that game, but not so much on Drake).

Really SMART the game is only on PS3... as GOW2 should have been. These kinds of titles will get more people, myself included, to buy PS3's... it's what I'm waiting for--and a price drop or two! Sony needs to hit the public fast and furious with reasons to buy the PS3. Big titles--exclusive to the PS3 (and not on the PS2 either) is a big step towards getting the PS3 ball rolling.

I had no idea about this game till yesterday. It does seem to be set entirely in the same location--kind of like that sprawling "island" idea lots of people had for Tomb Raider where Lara can roam around and eventually gain access to different parts of it.

It does sound promising. Even if it's not a terribly awesome game, it could still encourage other game designers to come up with innovative ideas and think in an oblique way.

Thats some good footage. Thanks.

His moves look abit funny when when he jumps. He flails his arms all about.:p

Still looks like a cool a game. Looks more in line with Indiana Jones than Tomb Raider. Tomb Raider to me is more like PoP.

One thing I did notice, when the plane is going down and he is about to jump out of it he says "How hard can it be?". That same line was delievered by Indy himself in the Temple of Doom movie when the plane was going down except he was talking about flying it. I kinda cringed at that.

Looks as linear as a Tomb Raider game to me. Thing that has me kinda wonderin' is if it is all jungle. Far Cry was cool but the jungle locale got old quick. I have seen some scenes where there is a tomb involved but it looked like it was more of a cut scene so I wonder... Also not sure about no auto aim on a console, that can be a pain sometimes.

Come on now...:p We're all TR crazy here but still.....

Bad controls? Boring? Unless you have played the game you have absolutely nothing to base that on. :)

As far as linear goes, Tomb Raider is on rails as well so I don't see that as much of a beef.

There is nothing out there (as far as I know) that shows that this game will tank. Naughty Dog isn't a newb development house either, they have a strong track record.

I found some gameplay videos here (http://media.ps3.ign.com/media/812/812550/vids_1.html)

Sure looks good, but trailers most of the time fool people. I hope this game will be hard and full of complex puzzles.

Article here (http://ps3.ign.com/articles/800/800586p1.html) Sounds a bit restrictive and linear like Legend to me. And also only human enemies.

What I'm afraid of is the linearity most. As it said on the article the environments are huge, but you can only run in a small jungle walkway. The rest is just panorama.

Also, I hope that Nathan can jump whenever, wherever, and not roll with jump, and jump only from edges (Like POP).

This looks like a good game, but a bit too Legend, not to mention we've only seen human enemies for now. Hope that will change.

And hopefully, they can remove the ledges too. I really hate those. They can be replaced by climbable walls or vines. It's a jungle after all.

Something extra here (http://ps3.ign.com/objects/812/812550.html)

It's already been said in interviews that the game is linear, which does kinda bug me alittle but how on earth can you say the animation looks wrong??

From the trailers I've watched Uncharted has some of the BEST animation I have ever seen in my life - the way Nathan dives for cover, rolls and quickly puts his back against the wall ready to shoot is just so awesome, it's all in one fluid motion and it looks incredible!!! :yik: :D

His jumping and swinging animations look fab too, I like the little touches such as the rocks falling after he's jumped and the way the camera pans out to show him leaping across pitfalls and clutching vines on narrow cliff-faces, it's all very cool and fluid :)

If there's a PS3 price cut for the UK at E3 this week then I'll most certainly be buying a PS3 this christmas and I'll bundle Uncharted along with it!

Anyhow lets just wait and see Lara's animation for TR8, I thought her movements in TRA were all over the place - Crystal need to spend more time tweaking her animations to make them more lifelike and realistic ;)

wow Yesrushdt, that's a great screenshot.

After watching every gameplay video I could find for this game, it looks like I love everything except for how he moves. It looks like jumping to ledges is going to feel alot like doing so did in "Dead Rising", which only had ledge climbing in about 3 areas out of that entire mall, and it wasn't so great. (Also I know that Dead Rising is far from an adventure game, and that is exactly my point)

Otherwise though, from the environments and the fact that the tombish areas don't seem linear, Lara does have competition. I hope they can be friends :p

At any rate, I'm totally excited for this game and I hope that CD look at anything that it does right and apply those ideas to TR8 in an original way. I think I'll still like Tomb Raider better, always, but this game looks sooo good.

Dunno but I think it would do well on a PC sales wise. As much as I would like to play the game I can't see a reason to justify spending 600 bucks for one game. I could buy a bleeding edge graphics card for that and still have a device thats much more diverse in its functionality.

meh... I feel like there's been too much of this game shown at E3, think I'm starting to see the tomb raider comparisons as the games downfall... :(

I mean on one of the videos, Gamespot's on stage demo since you asked - showed the guy having to re-do the same platforming section 3 times over which makes me think the controls are alittle loose as in the video Nathan slipped off the ledge he was traversing... plus the gun combat doesn't look all that in depth, although I have to admit the hand to hand is pretty awesome - Nathan dropkicked this guy and he went flying back! - it's so real and just so very cool! :D

I guess I'll just wait and see what happens with it but I'm not so sure it's a revolutionary title as everything we've seen including those horrid interactive cutscenes have been done in other game before - could Naughty Dog be disguising this with pretty visuals? :mis:

I just seen those great trailers of Uncharted it looks fantastic. To me Uncharted looks like how Tomb Raider would play if it was on the PS3. Alot of people are comparing Tomb Raider: Legends to Uncharted but honestly can't compare them yet. TR:L is is an awsome game but also a half-ass game. The game is extreamely easy & short. Crystal Dynamics 1nly wanted to test the waters to see if TR series was as popular as it was before they put alot of time, effort, and money into the game. But to say Tomb Raider was short and easy like it was it had a great suspenceful story, amazing graphics (if not the best graphics on the PS2), and great updated gameplay. Crystal Dynamics & Toby said since TR is came back strong (by selling 3 million worldwide) the next gen TR games fans have not seen nothing yet.

Tomb Raider:Legends gameplay & story was damn good to say I ended it less than 5 hours. Even though TR used Prince of Persia engine it still play like Tomb Raider but alot smoother. The 1nly differences that seperates TR:L from previous TRs is slow motion, use of the grapple, running & shooting (@ tha same time) driving & shooting (also @ that same time) and last but not least interactive cutscenes. Lara still uses her amazing acrobatics, swim, shimmy on ledges, climb ropes & poles etc. She still explore jungle environments, temple settings & other places around the world. They changed TR for the better but still kept it's originally from the previous TRs.

Uncharted stars a guy name Nathan Drake who is basically a male version of Lara Croft. His gameplay is extreamly similar to TR but alot better. The graphics are phenomenal, the shooting is alot more smoother & accurate, and the hand-to-hand combat is alot more useful. The levels bacially is more beautiful than Tomb Raider but still desigin the same. The location is also rip offs 4rom TR like ancient temples, jungle environment deadly booby traps & puzzles. Everything that Drake do Lara does it already but he just do it alot better. No Doubt uncharted is definitely going to be Tomb Raider's #1 rival.

Very true. I think this game looks lots of fun, but it suffers from the same problems as Legend - the platforming looks too easy, it is VERY linear, some of the moves are unrealistic, interactive cutscenes etc etc.

Will be lots of fun though so that's all that matters.

But I expect better things from Lara and TR8.

I'm sure the game will be alot of fun but there's alot of negative things I just can't seem to shake off

1 - The game is linear, NaughtyDog themselves have already said this and I think it's very dissapointing because as a PS3 game Uncharted should be bigger with more paths and optional ways through the enviroments, sadly it ain't going to happen :(

2 - The gunplay is almost useless, I happen to notice this during one of Gametrailers vids - the guy playing the demo just ran past every gaurd he came across and they didn't seem to give chase or anything, could be dodgy AI as well

3 - Now this is where folk will disagree with me but hey I gotta be honest now, Uncharted - in my opinion is a Tomb Raider rip-off. I know it's a guy and he's got totally different morals to Lara and what not but at least two of their "pillars of gameplay" are just copied from TR - platforming and gunplay

I'm hoping this will be a new style of action adventure games and to me the visuals are truly lush but I honestly won't care for it if the only serious improvement is in the graphical department - afterall who really gives a hoot there's plants that bend when you walk past them??

I was watching some trailers a few days ago and he's sideways jump is really whack. Lara's is much more realistic and she looks like she's struggling. If you ask me, these guys could still learn some things from CD (and that's not a good thing)

I expect better things from Lara and TR8.

I HOPE better things from Lara and TR8. I honestly don't expect it anymore. If you ask me, we'll get another Legend/Anniversary type of game, slightly improved gameplay, graphics, size. And that's it. It still won't feel like an interactive world we're exploring. I want to feel like I'm really exploring a tomb like I used to. I HOPE they will succeed in that with TR8. If they don't, it's obviously CD's fault, they have all the potential in the world with the 360 and PS3.

But I expect better things from Lara and TR8.
So do I. Her first real next gen game (TRL wasnt real for me, becaause of the graphics and that it was generally on PS2/PC/PsP, but made for Xbox360 too for some reason :p) to be what AoD didnt become :p

remember all the BS defence people gave CD "it's their first TR blah blah blah"

well Naughty Dog should be offered the same excuse IMO.............it's their first foray into this style of game

and rip off of TR is getting kinda old don't you think, like it (TR) ripped nothing off

every game in existence has robbed and pillaged games that came before

I check the last video of Uncharted and I don't really know why people are hype about this game. It got EVRYTHING we hate about Legend (Even if it was a good game)

I've saw :

- A LOT of human ennemis
- Linearity
- Bad puzzles
- QTE
- Jump sequence like TRL and TRA
- Shinning, yes I've saw them, it's EXACTLY like TRL, like if they didn't copied.

I think the majority of it's fans are there just because of the beautifull graphics

You have to remember though that a lot of people thought Legend was a good game not a good Tomb Raider (as you said yourself _Lam). Uncharted takes a lot from the Tomb Raider and Indiana Jones series but it's not Tomb Raider so people have no real expectations of what it's supposed to be like. When TR went to CrystalD it was an established franchise and the fans knew it as a somewhat challenging, lots of exploration, long and fun franchise. That is what we were expecting with TRL. It's (mostly) accepted that while it was fun, the somewhat challenging, long and explorative feel of the franchise had gone (mostly) to an easy, short and linear game.

Naughty Dog's Uncharted doesn't have that. There are no games before it. Only similar franchises. You can not look at the TR franchise and expect what you expect with TR. You can surely expect similarities but not the same things (well... except the fun, you should be able to expect fun with all games :D).

And of course, the same rule that applied to CrystalD's TRL should also apply to Naughty Dog's Uncharted as Agent 47 said: "It's their first game, we can give them another chance."

And anyway, Naughty Dog are known for their great games (Crash Bandicoot - Crash Team Racing and Jak and Daxter: The Precursor's Legacy - Jak X) this one should be no different :).

nice words Dingaling :tmb:

we must remember that this is indeed a NEW IP for Naughty Dog,and as such the PS3. the game may well indeed "look" like a TR clone, but the actual plot and game play and going about doing things within Drake's world will be different :)

plus there's still time to fine tune the game before release...........if this game does well you can almost taste a sequel :jmp:

ever thought Naughty Dog as a gaming company has fans due it's previous catalogue of titles, (as Dingaling listed) as such fans of their last IP's will give this a try.....graphics are irrelevant
