View Full Version : Keep Zip and Alistair?
Do you think that they should keep Zip and Alistair in the next TR?
I think maybe the discussion of this topic could take place HERE (http://www.tombraiderforums.com/showthread.php?t=89180) :wve:

No, I think it would be better if I move this to Future Games section.

According to what CD are saying about the sense of isolation in Tomb Raider Anniversary, they may end up dumping Zip and Alistair in TR8. Here's hoping!
Please no more of them!!! ... :)
they are little idiots, but i liked them anyway...
what i liked was that they were funny sometimes and in all these tombs you haven't felt so lonely when they spoke to you.
what i disliked was the fact that they promped everything. the puzzles in the game were already very easy and than zip said "look at that bos, you can put it on the slab" that was disturbing
cd can keep them IMO, but they should only give informations about certain things and not promding everything so that you don't have to think for your own anymore. that's not tomb raider
Hasn't Z & A been confirmed for Legend II?
The idea of providing exposition by having Lara call an expert is not a bad one, but the constant chatter of Z&A was rather annoying and would have to be severely reduced.

Its a hard decision, you could have them togher again, but they would drive me crazy squabling. Or you could seperate them. Have Zip as a guide through Citys/Modern Buildings(as in TRC). Then, have Alister help you in the jungle/tomb areas. Still, I would personaly prefer Lara to Raid alone.
da tomb raider!

No way. I hate Alister and Zip. I never want to see the two morons again, but I know I probably will.

you know i believe this depends on how Lara's story and adventures progress...if they keep remaking the classics chances are we wont see them...when they make Legend 2 we will and after that who knows? these guys have to figure this out carefully..Zip and Alister to me weren't as bad enough to kill them..they were ok..but after playing the game continuously to get the rewards i learned all their lines so it was just repetitive

I wouldn't mind if they appeared again. After all, just like Indiana Jones said: 95% of archaeological work is spent in libraries. Why not have someone to do it for you? Or the IT work, as Lara is not always in tombs (let's face it, you can't avoid cities nowadays) - and I doubt Lara is a computer expert. Also, they were part of the story in Legend. If you simply cut them out, you'll have serious problem in continuity. So, it's better to keep them (to a degree and in a more inventive way) then to scrap them no matter the cost. At least, that's what I think, and as a human being, I can be wrong.
hate them!!!!
I hope they die a miserable death!!!!
btw, I have actually (and thankfully) changed my mind about them idiots!
Keep ZAA?
Only in boxes 6ft beneath Croft Manor gardens please. :wve:

I think you actually need to "tone it up" a bit Phlip, not tone it down. :D
As I have said repeatedly, if these two "braniacs" know it all, then why don't they do the work. Cut out the middleman (Lara). I mean, if they did the Legend missions it would have been a piece of cake as they knew every trap, puzzle and method of escape. Never mind athletic ability, they wouldn't need it as they would have avoided all necessary means for using it.
So Lara is extraneous, or at the very least stupid, and uneducated in the work that she pertains to know. That's not how I like to think of Lara, and it does not make Lara or the game better. It just lessens her.
I think that lara should fire them in TR8.
I don't think that Lara need them. She's smart enough and don't need any support. She didn't need them before and don't need them now.:)
I liked the idea about them, but as Lara says by her self, they don't let you to concentrate. All the time talking about something random.

Personally, I'd like to see them erased permanently from the TR Universe... but if they have to be included, they should be utilised in a way that means the player contacts them for clues if they are stuck, not them chipping in with 'witty' comments, man-gasming each time Lara jumps and basically holding the gamer's hands every step of the way. That way, any interaction with them is optional - if you don't want to hear 'Woo Hoo!' and 'Lara! Are you sure?!' every fine seconds, you don't have to.

I don't mind them, there was something like that in the film. They don't bother me but there is no feeling of isolation... I guess they could blend it-sort of.
I think that they should keep Zip but not in all levels. Just levels where he could be of use.
Everyone look, CD have read all of our hate posts for Z&A, so they are completely aware that we realli don't like them, so I have a very good feeling that they'll keep them away from Lara in future. Z&A annoy us, bug us and really just... get on our nerves, so CD will do the right thing and hopefully somehow make a storyline where they get killed in TR8.

Riv was warning me so please don't cheer me on, for my own sake.
Hell NO!!! We want them buried 6 feet under!!
Yes, but if they went, for no apparent reason. There would be alot of questions wouldn't there ?
They were fun, but you lose the paranoia of the quiet and lonely Tomb Raider original with them talking to Lara all the time.

Keep them 6 feet under. Don't care where they're buried, just as long as they are :)

well... yeah, but at the beginning of TR8, in the opening cutscene for the game, they should die somehow, and Lara refuses to have anyone else giving her ear ache.

YEAH! Lol another reason why they should never have been created! :vlol:

There would be a very simple way to exterminate them in the opening minute. Someone blows up her humble abode and the two irritating bufoons are vaporized! But amazingly, Winston survives because he clumsily locked himself in the only bomb-proof place in her home...the freezer. ;)

If it's for the goodness of mankind, then it is better to perish them and carry on as though nothing has ever happened.

If I was watching a CGI film of TR then I'd want them to be there.
They're both OK (if slightly predictable) characters. I think they'd work fine in a film serving the dual purpose of providing exposition moments, and giving Lara someone to work off, and so provide a deeper understanding of who she is as a character.
But games are not CGI films... And I don't think they should be made into them either. It's a waste of potential.
The problem is, is that the 2 styles of TR (Crystal's CGI interactive story style v. Core's lonely but "personally experienced" wanderings) are to some extent mutually incompatible. Whatever they do next with Zip & Alister (ditch or keep) they're going to upset somebody. I suppose it's a case of which group is larger...
I prefer it how it was before - Lara journeying alone. But even I will miss them a bit if they're ditched.... Somehow, strangely, at the same time I want them gone, and yet... they were funny at times. I'm not going to be totally happy either way now. I wonder if anyone else feels the same way?
I think the guys should be back...definatly
I think they were a nice addition to Tomb Raider, but if they are to return, then i just hope they arn't yacking in your ear alll the time....I liked it when they made a joke here and there but just not when they give away what to do :p
Also I think having friends is good for Lara's character because it doesnt make her look like this complete reject woman who can't go without shooting every guy she sees
So yeah, Keep Zip + Alister! :D

Dump them out of TR. Then I'll invite them to Dr. Chris Von Lol's lab and do some testing... :mis:

I'm pretty sure they'll be back in TR8 so I've accepted that. Here's how I think it should work -- Every so often (maybe once every hour or two if the game takes 15-20 hours, so basically what would have been between levels if they kept a Core-style level structure) there should be a cutscene where Lara contacts them. She could tell them about some interesting artifact she found, for example, and ask them to do some research on it. She'd also receive the results of whatever research she asked them to do in the previous cutscene. This would be strictly storyline stuff and not something we'd reasonably expect Lara to know or be able to figure out on her own since it would require access to her database/library back home. There could be a joke or two as long as it's well-written. Then during the actual gameplay, there is no mandatory contact with them at all. However, *if* the player wants, the player can initiate a session in which Lara asks for clues about where to go next or how to achieve her objective (none of these hints should be given unless the player specifically asks for a hint). I think if it worked like that, it would be acceptable to most people.
^That could work, Ward Dragon.:tmb: I'll be a LOT happier if they died or disappear to avalon forever.

LOL! Now that's a smart idea :tmb:
Yes keep them. They can be quite useful for scenes. And makes Lara more human.

I am sure Lara will lose contact with them in Avalon, unless they have broardband there.
No. lets hope that Crysal realzed their mistake
No please God!!
they're not necessary..;)

Lara is not a human. SO, no we don't need them;)
I got an awsome idea !
What if we could turn off our headset whenever we want, so if we are tired to heard those 2 guy, push a buton and then :
- Sorry Zip ! I will turn off my headset !
They are indifferent to me...
Keep those two? No thanks. I remember reading a funny thing in a magazine that called zip and alister 'dickheads' - oh I laughed a lot!

I wouldn't mind them being in the game, but please, no help from them via headset. It kills all challenge.
For the last time, hell no!
