View Full Version : You can still preorder a PS3 - is this a worrying sign?

I went into town on Saturday and in the windows of many game shops including GAME, Gamestation, HMV, Virgin and others I seen
"PS3 available for preorder - guaranteed for Friday"
So this simply means that less than one week prior to release, game shops still have PS3s available to preorder. Now, this could be due to one of 2 things:
1. Sony have sent millions of units to the UK and there is plenty for everyone.
2. There are plenty of preorders left because no one wants a PS3 for whatever reason.
All I know is that there were no Xbox 360 preorders available for weeks (or even months) prior to release.
So...why are there so many PS3 preorders left? Lets have a healthy debate...
I think this is largely due to the second option. And I'm not surprised to be honest.

I PRE ORDERED opps caps sorry i pre ordered mine agesa go im number 8 yeahhhhhh !!!!!! i work for gamestation and every gamestation store (dont know about the others ) is having a minimum of 60 consoles per store and any ones left after pre orders have been filled on friday will go general public release
Lucky you.. We're out of preorders..
I think it's the second one for you UK people :wve:
Although I do really want one, I'm not pre-ordering for two reasons:
1. I don't have enough money as I just bought a Wii.
2. It doesn't look that promising and I think they'll be easy to get hold of after release anyway.

Point is, there should be no preorders left! This console should have sold out months ago!

yer i dunno why that is, maybe people cant afford it or maybe our head offcies have got more than they are letting on
It's probably coz it's nearly 2.5 times more expensive than the Wii. It was only £180. Some people just aren't gonna fork out £425 for a console, that's far too much.
There was an Article in a news paper about the PS3 (cos its out in friday) and they said Sony shipped 220,000 units to the Uk so its even less. ouch!
Its a good thing. It shows how many units sony are shipping. Record pre orders show its not a case of nobody wanting one. In fact I was going to preorder one today. I went to a cashpoint to take out £50 for the deposit. Then it said I have insufficient funds. I checked my balance and I had 64p in there! I should have had almost £1000 in there! I was very ****** off! Someones taken out almost a grand without me knowing about it! I was saving that money up for the PS3 and now its gone! I better get that money back! I'm going to sort this out with my bank tommorow.
I think, what the main problem might be is the fact there is already a console out which is pretty similar, but much cheaper. That's the reason why I'm not getting one on launch anyway.

Not tomorrow, NOW!
Seriously, get on the web and find the fraud dept's number for your bank. They generally man the phones 24 hour. You need to stop your card as soon as possible and start the ball rolling.
Some pond-life used my account to the tune of £800 for on-line gambling during the summer. I got the money back but that's not the point. It's a hassle getting it sorted out.
Phone them now!

proves nothing!!!!!
every town will be different, in your case Shops still have some, in my case shops don't
it's about the demographic and the size of ones wallet really ;)
either way this machine WILL sell regardless.....this "nobody wants one" is pretty lame dude, now if i'm not mistaken you're Xbox fan.............so i ask why are you remotely concerned about Sony's p*ss poor inferior machine???/
just asking :D

I was just talking with my brother and he's not surprised there are tons of PS3s left because the launch games suck! - and I tend to agree :(
When the 360 launched I bought it because games like Kameo and Perfect Dark Zero were released alongside the console - plus I really did think that 360 was going to be an awesome machine! :) - and it still is awesome
When I look at the PS3 - and I do have enough money to buy one this Friday at launch - I just think who in the heck would want to buy this £425 console then waste another £50 on crap games like Genji and Motorstorm?? :hea:
Sure the console will have Final Fantasy XIII, I guess in a few years maybe, and its awesome Oblivion has been ported over to the console too - great a 360 game I already own, so why am I going to buy it again??
The only game that interests me is Resistance - and yet it's funny because I used to hate FPS games but PDZ turned that all around, now I really enjoy them!
And what is the deal with the controller - it's got a tilt function? - here's an interesting point, who CARES!!!
I'll maybe pass by GAME on Friday and take a look in but I'm certainly not buying a £425 console like PS3 just to play a £50 game like Genji - it sucks!!! :cln:
But I will buy a PS3, eventually ;)
Besides Friday is when I'm getting my new HDTV!!!
Seeing my 360 in 1080i - AWESOME!!! :jmp:
Oh btw I take back what I said about there being loads of PS3s coming to the UK. Apparently its not much over 200,000. However I just realised. You can pre order a PS3 at my GAME now but they DO NOT say you'll get it at launch if you pre order now.

I remember reading (I think it was IGN) that the PS3 had been ordered 15 times more than the Wii before it was released and 7 times more than the 360 before it was released, online. Maybe people prefer to order it online?

*Sigh* it's a real shame we can't have a proper discussion without it developing into a childish fanboy war... :(
OK, some things:
Whether the console is still available or not does not matter much. What matters is the number of preorders they have, and that is difficult to gauge from just a few signs in shops.
It would be interesting to compare these numbers to preorders for other consoles in the UK, preorders for PS3 in the US (normalized to pre-orders per inhabitant), preorders for other consoles in the US - well, any kind of statistic would be interesting. A sign in a shop window says nothing.
The shops could have just been lying. You never know whether they mean what they say.
I think it's because the launch games aren't that good, but it's the same with most consoles at their launch. I'm not going to pay £425 for a console that hasn't got any good games to go with it! :o I think I'll wait until some better games do come out, and then I'll decide whether to buy the PS3 or 360.

The Wii had some great launch games.

If I'm being honest, I could afford a PS3 on Friday. However there are no games that, for the immediate future anyway, justify the high price tag.

Really? Here in the U.S. (and I know this for a FACT) they were sold out fast. You couldn't even buy them from Sony. My friend had to buy his for over $1500 American dollars. It must not be too popular where you live...

Assassin's Creed
The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion
F.E.A.R.
Resistence: Fall of Man
Marvel: Ultimate Alliance
Splinter Cell: Double Agent (Expanded Version)
Fight Night: Round 3 (Expanded Version)
There's many. And, even though majority of these are on Xbox 360, the 360 doesn't support some of the extra content in thse PS3 version. Keep in mind: I'm no damn fanboy! I hate fanboy's! In fact, I'm most likely going to get a 360.
I pre-ordered mine today, the woman in the store said we're expecting to get 20 ps3's and 11 have been pre-ordered.
And why are you wondering why there are pre-orders left? The console is expensive, not everyone can afford it. That doesn't mean it's not popular or a bad console.
It's quite logical there aren't many pre-orders left if you ask me. If I'm not mistaking, Europe has more consoles and therefore more consoles are left.

I have to agree with you on that. There are actually NO games atm that I want for the ps3. But I'm buying it anyway, so when the good games are available I'm at least sure that I don't have to wait for my ps3.

Oblivion, F.E.A.R. and Splinter Cell all have been delayed, they will not be available on the day of release.

UT, what if they forgot to take that ad off or simply still keeping it for attracting people? XD There are ALWAYS going on a lot of machinations while in reality whole picture is different.
IMO PS3 sells just as normally as Sony would want to.
Anyways, I'm getting it right after MGS4 or FFXIII comes out.

I know, but they're just games I thought I'd include because they will be great. :)

I'm sure you're correct. They've stated in several magazines that they won't be profitting from the PS3 for quite a few years because they made it cheaper than it should have been, or is worth at least. :D
Can't wait for the Naughty Dog game! :jmp:

PS3s have been sitting on the shelves around my way--at a time when they simply shouldn't be. It wasn't that there was so much stock, it was that they weren't selling what few they had! Meanwhile Wiis couldn't be found anywhere, even though stock was coming in they were selling immediately. I myself have had the money--and the opportunity--to buy a PS3 for at least 2 solid months, and I have had NO problem just walking out without it. And that's NOT Sony hate or anything. I remember at a similar time in PS2s infancy I was dying to get one--and I bought one the very moment I finally found one in stores. Sony did everything right with the PS2 but not this time around.
