View Full Version : Will the control configuration change again?
...because when AOD was released, the controls wern't the same as the PS1 games' were, and I think that was just down to the fact that AOD was a next gen game, or mabe they wanted a change, all I know is that people would have been a lot happier if the control configuration stayed mostly the same as the originals.
Yes. I know, when you get new moves some buttons have to be diffrent and that's ok, it's just AOD changed some really unnesasary (sp) ones (like jump and roll, those buttons were directly swapped :hea:) and many fans were very dissapointed with that, including me :(
So, when Legend two comes out wich it will be out for PS3, will the CC change just for the hell of it like AOD? Because if they change the control configuration, I will be really annoyed because as I said, unless you've got new moves, it's pointless changing the buttons, with every game, like Tomb Raider, people have grown to know and love the control system and then... AOD
So, do you think they will change?
I don't think the main movement controls will change for Legend2. It just wouldn't make any sense. However, other areas (like accessing the backpack) might change significantly, and of course, there's always the interesting question how new control systems like the Wiimote and PS3s sixaxis controller will be used.
what's a sixaxis controller?
I know there'll be as stupid tilt the controller and you'll go THAT way but what's sixaxis?
what's a sixaxis controller?
Sixacis is the name for the new PS3 controller. :wve:
ok, as long as there's not tilting system I'm happy, I hope the ps2 controller will work on ps3 for all games .
ok, as long as there's not tilting system I'm happy, I hope the ps2 controller will work on ps3 for all games .Well if the game incorporates the new tilt feature, then probably not. If you have any questions you can always post them in THIS (http://www.tombraiderforums.com/showthread.php?t=90100) thread. :)
ok, thanks. You know I just noticed that you have a stack load of posts, I'm surprised your not a mod yet. And one more post from me and I'm a professor :jmp:
anyway, mabe CD will not decide to annoy us fans by changing the controls :)

Yeah, I'm hoping the controls will stay the same. The only controls I didn't like in Legend were the swimming controls.
Phlip, I recommend you the PC game...the controls haven't changed much in TR1-6, and would probably be the same (with few additions ) in TR7-TRA-TR8.
I hate the pc controls for games, my brothers always on the pc anyway.

I would have thought that if you get a load of posts without a certain numberof bans, you'd be a mod, but anyway :off:
I just hope the swimming controls are improved. aswell as invisible walls, remember all those rocks with them invisible walls surrounding them, yeuch.

Invisible walls? In the motorbike sections?
Nope. Far from it.

I'd like to be able to use square to jump instead of X....
Console games should allow people to customise the controls if they want to like PC games rather than select from a few pre-determined control configurations....
Siphon Filter on psone allowed you to do that but there was no need 'cos the controls were flawless anyway.

I agree 101%.
I like the configuration in Legend, but I liked it in the old games as well. Nevertheless, I don't see much point in switching them around for no apparent reason; I still don't know why the roll and jump were switched in AOD. Unless they're adding new moves, I think it should stay pretty much the same.

No, absolutely not. The postcount is totally irrelevant.

The pc controls of Legend were just average. I have seen many configurations that were superior, but an equal number that were far worse. I still did not like them, but over 75% of the problems were related to the camera and it's relationship to movement and combat.
If any of you have played Oblivion, you have experienced some superb modern controls. Although in this game one does not climb, the camera is superbly executed for movement. And one can switch from third person to first if one needs to.

I doubt it because, personally, I feel that the Legend controls are flawless. I know CD feel the same way, including their configuration. ;)

I realize there are those who do. I noticed the console players (both in here and in other forums) feel much better about the Legend controls, as opposed to the pc players. Although some pc players like them as well. It really depends on which games you've played (and liked), and your method of playing.

How are they on PC? That may be why I don't understand what everybody is talking about. I played it on Xbox. ;)

Does it matter? As long as they're all valid, it dosn't matter if I make 1000 :cen:

I think it has more to do with the fact that exclusive pc gamers (those who only play games on a pc) have an entirely different way of looking at controls, because of the evolution in these controls (pc as opposed to the various consoles) over the years. I have played a lot of games, all pc. The evolution of controls from the early days (from all keyboard to mouse/keyboard) to today has been relatively consistent. But, when a game is designed for a console, and then ported to a pc, the controls are "different". Not necessarily worse, just sometimes alien to this evolutionary track that I mention. That is why I have problems with these ported games.
A good analogy of this would be barabora and his "porting" of his thoughts. :) Although he writes English words, it is hard to understand them the way he puts them together. When they port from a console to a pc, it's the same thing in a control way. Well, maybe not as bad. ;)
I mentioned the LotR games as a perfect example of this. I cannot play them, period. The controls are a nightmare on the pc. But I imagine if you played the console version, or were skilled in such types of ported games than you would not have the same problems.

Relax (http://www.jasoco.net/data/files/images/Chill%20Pill.png), it's a joke.
I get along fine with the new controls but I always liked the old style controls (and I am a console player). I've said it before but I find precision control clumsy and sloppy with analogue sticks. Whether that's a hardware issue (the PS2 controller is configured in a less than optimal way possibly) or a game interface issue, I don't know. Maybe it's a bit of both.
I also liked the 3D movement system (which is connected to controls) of the earlier TR games. I liked it so much I always wished a lot more other games had it too.
I also prefered the weighted feel of Lara in previous games, she felt properly grounded in that world. In Legend I feel a bit floaty at times.
The analogue sticks are definitely much easier to use in Legend.
Personally though I think there is much more to control structures than "ease of use", especially in this genre of gaming. Longer term I'm hoping all games improve in this area. No way is Legend (or any current game out there) the pinnacle beyond which we'll never see improvement.

I mostly play on ps2 but i can sort of imagine the camera problems with Legend on PC...
I can just move the analogue stick to rotate the camera easily in whatever direction and it's very easy to do but a PC game would require a fixed camera like the old TRs I'd assume..
Lara's movement should be independent from the camera like the old ones.. not relative to it...
On a console that's okay 'cos the twin analogue sticks make it much more bearable, though I'd still rather the old way...
If think its all down to how many buttons to do the same thing.
With the Classics on the Playstation. To move Lara in her enviroment you have four buttons. Forward, camera left, camera right and hop back. Playing Legend on the PS2 you have buttons for move up, move right, move left, move down, camera rotate left, camera rotate right and centre camera. Even the swimming controls have an extra button.
PC users may find more buttons easier, it may just be down to configuration and having to use a mouse. On the PS/PS2 consoles less buttons are a godsend...at least to me. Another downside of CD's control scheme noticable on consoles is the tendancy of Lara to 'zig zag' when she moves forward. Even with the so called 'dated' D pad PS controlled Lara she moved without zig zagging with a smooth arc. Use two different control schemes and you get two games that play differently, be it PC or console.
Best way to describe it is how Snake moves in MGS (legend like) versus Leon in Resident Evil 4 (Classic TR like). Two massive games, two different takes on controls.
l play a variety of games on consoles and PC, so if the controls were to change again l would not be fussed, l do not really see why they would change though. l never had a problem with the swimming controls in Legend, although l did at first have a problem when replaying Tomb Raider 1 afterwards, had to get used to the change in the swimming again. l thought the camera based movement for the PC was great, l have played other games with similar controls such as Dark Messiah, but being lazy l do prefer the console camera which you hardly have to touch.

I dont think so.:DI like the configurations in Legend because it is easier for Lara to control.

Whatever, Phlip. So don't have the energy or the inclination to argue this with you. Besides, it's sooooo off topic.
On topic, though, I hope they keep the controls exactly as they were in Legend, or maybe give to option to assign actions to specific buttons, like on the pc.
...because when AOD was released, the controls wern't the same as the PS1 games' were, and I think that was just down to the fact that AOD was a next gen game, or mabe they wanted a change, all I know is that people would have been a lot happier if the control configuration stayed mostly the same as the originals.

I love it when it comes to controls, people start talking about AoD. AoD's controls may be bad, but they had a few similarities to the older controls, whereas Legend's control system was totally different (Not bad, different), where they simply HAD to put in plus buttons to swim. God forbid, to use one simple button and the analog stick to control her underwater instead of having one button, what you have to hold down and control her without any problem
And anyway, I don't have problem with Legend's controls. The only thing I would like them to change are the swimming. CD, what were you thinking when you made those controls? :)
