Man? It's a woman speaking :vlol: And it's Finnish. Nothing really new [she pronounced Scion like Zion :hea:], but she does say the music and sound effects break the spooky mood.

She said that the new sound effects and the new music ruins bit the mood of the game. That's the worst news. And that the levels are quite same but much bigger and there's new routes in the levels. The story is also much easier to follow. That's all. The language is Finnish.

I translated the preview for you folk :)

Lara Croft is a name, which all the players know.
The tomb raider, who has lived a bit in the quiet side, makes a small return in the form of Anniversary.

Geez, has it been that long? It has been 10 years, since the first Tomb Raider was released. Time flies, but for Lara Croft, the years have been kind, because this girl is still as stunning and in good shape, as ten years ago.

Tomb Raider Anniversary, is a celebratory game for the first Tomb Raider.
But the game is not just a copy, it is filled with new improvements.
The game has been improved by setting a new motor under the bonnet, which is the second-best game Tomb Raider Legend's and the motor is without a doubt better .

However, Anniversary is not a plain copy of the first game, even it might seem so at first. The game has been expanded in a settle way, that the key moments are there, but around them has been added more stuff. The levels are mostly the same, but bigger and with new routes.
Of course, the enviroments are improved and more detailed. There is more sound effects and music, but they spoil the mood, because the eerie silence and restrained use of music was the key thing in first TR.

As in the first game, Lara is hired to find all the parts of the ancient relic, Scion, and save the world. Especially the storytelling is more detailed. The twists in the story have been opened by adding more cutscenes, so that the cryptic story would open up a bit to the players.
Of course you can still ask, "so what?" If the story is familiar, do you still need to yap about it even more?

Tomb Raider Anniversary is like a remake of old popular movies. Colours, details, shiny surfaces and lots of new stuff. But it's hard to improve the mood, and you simply can't experience the first meeting of Lara again.

For them, who have played the first game through and trough, Anniversary is not going to be better than the first one. To other people, it might mean lots of fun with Lara.

Rating:

+ You have to respect it
+ The game has stayed true to the original
- The sound effects and music

(I apologize the possible mistakes in my grammar.)

^^^ Thanks for that, Jessica!

So, they basically gave TRA an 8 out of 10 because nostalgia can't be beaten... that sounds like what they're saying. "The first love is always best". Kind of a heavy-handed way to treat the new game IMO. If you feel that way then you're always going to have problems with it--while simultaneously forgetting that the original wasn't perfect either.

Bowie
24-04-07, 16:33
Thanks heaps Jess! :D

I'm actually surprised at the loss of marks for the music/sound effects. I thought the use of music was basically a carbon copy of the original, if nothing else is, so it's strange that they must've noticed the music more this time than in the original.

The game has been improved by setting a new motor under the bonnet, which is the second-best game Tomb Raider Legend's and is without a doubt better than in the first one.

First of all, thank you for the translation :) I was wondering if you could clarify what this part means. Are they saying that Legend is the second best TR game and that TRA's engine is better than TR1's engine? (The first time I read it, it sounded like they said TRA would be much better than TR1 but not as good as Legend. However, that can't be what they meant...)

I believe that it is the globe from the Atlas Stature so it makes sense.

Agreed. If there are very few balls, and if they all make sense like this, then I won't mind.

I did not read it that way. The review said "sound effects and music" and nothing about talking and cutscenes. I seem to recall that TR1 was loaded with sound effects and music. I particularly remember the eerie clanging noise in the cistern. I wonder if the reviewer ever played the original.

TR1 had very little music, especially on the PC version. I think the reviewer was mainly complaining about the abundance of music in TRA. Even though TRA has less music than Legend did, there seems to be music at every combat encounter, for example. I personally don't mind that, but it *is* different from the original so I'd say the reviewer did indeed play TR1;) Also, the reviewer did say that TRA has more cutscenes than TR1 did:

Especially the storytelling is more detailed. The twists in the story have been opened by adding more cutscenes, so that the cryptic story would open up a bit to the players.
Of course you can still ask, "so what?" If the story is familiar, do you still need to yap about it even more?

Well, the girl said in the way, that Legend would be the second best Tomb Raider game in the whole series and that the motor is better than Legend's (I apologize for my bad choice of words :P). IMO, that first comment made me lose the trust in this particular review :o

That's what I was getting at. Hearing Legend described as the second-best TR game made me very suspicious of the rest of the review. In any case, I have an idea how hard translations can be (I used to hate doing it in Spanish class) so don't worry about your word choice. The important thing is we understand what you meant :)

Oh, I don't think I commented on this before, but I think this is the first time I've heard a lengthy flow of spoken Finnish. For some reason it reminded me of Spanish or Italian despite that the languages have nothing in common that I know of (I was playing the Legend demo in Italian awhile back, and whoever said it's better in Italian was right :p) In any case, I like how Finnish sounds :D

Instead of picking up a key to put in a lock... We find a ball to roll on a pressure pad...

Its crystals way to 'innovate'...

Hmmmm

They even said the classics had too many block puzzles...so instead replaced them with ball puzzles :wve:

Well l think using the ball is much more interesting than just moving a block, and it fits in more with Lara's somewhat destructive nature :D

I really hate the way Lara runs. Every time I see another video I hate it even more.

Btw, I was in Finland briefly with a NATO delegation, it's a wonderful country. Very pleasant and attractive people. :)

I'd prefer that they were triangle shaped, makes it more interesting than a boring ball. ;)

Well, I sort of prefer Crystals to Pyramidal Objects. But everyone seems to be against crystals these days, even if used as save points :( (the best and most interesting save points in the Tomb Raider history: the crystals of TR1)

Just Helsinki, was only there for 3 days. Still I saw enough to see that it is a beautiful city, filled with pleasant, good looking people. A plethora of hot babes everywhere I went, but as a married man I can only admire the art from a respectful distance. :D

Helsinki is nice.. But It's gray compared to other towns in here :D And yeah.. They may look beautifull.. but you gotta watch for that tongue :o

Back on topic.. I don't like that new host of Tilt.tv.. She isn't as good as the previous one and she has a monotone voice. But nice to see that they gave it 8/10. They've usually given bad reviews to tomb raider but they gave AOD 7/10 because of the great story and that you can get used to the controls.

Very monotonous. Jeez, she sounds like a Finnish robot. It sounded like she was trying to read through the script as rapidly as possible and with zero inflection.

I was surprised how many people I talked to there spoke pretty good English. But than again, I was mostly around military and highly eduated people.

Heheheh, I assume when you say "tongue" you are referring to their sharp rhetoric, not something else...:cln:

Lol.. she propably was just reading the script on the camera. It's a common problem that starts in school. Our teachers get mad about it and try to force you to expres your self alot more.. she probs skipped those classes :p

Well we start practising english at the age of 7 or 8 (2nd grade). And we don't dub movies/tv shows in finnish. So that's the most likely reason.

As for sharp tongues.. yeah the way you described it.. Although I have no experience :whi:

I like the way the introduction to Greece was done.. faithfull to the original. Let's just hope that she says ''Pierre, you litterbug'' :D She did seem more serious and emotional in that scene though.

Just saw this on tv. And I have to say.. WOW! it looks and sounds great on a big screen :D The tv version has sound effects and apparantly whilst Lara is trying to find Pierre you can hear him talking on the background. I couldn't make out what he was saying though =/ And in the ''Pierre litterbug'' scene the narrator just talked on to that bit where lara said something :(

I can´t believe they gave it an 8/10...have they actually played St. Francis Folly? And what the hell was OPS2M thinking when they rated it 8/10?

Grrrr :p

I remember when an 8/10 score always use to indicate a sign of great quality in a video game, but thanks to the saturated use 9/10 and 10/10 scores people have been led to believe the (false) notion that 8/10 is some how a bad score.

My advice, ignore ratings like that.

Anyway, ever since a review from the OPS2M UK gave Grand Theft Auto 3 8/10 I take review scores of "big" games with a pinch of salt. :)

Right you are... and games that are in a series always get points knocked off just for being #3 or #4 or whatever. TRA, to many reviewers, is "just another Tomb Raider game" regardless of how good it actually is. Even reviewers who love the series will knock something off because of that.
