View Full Version : Male of Female characters?

Hey! Which do you prefer playing with? Male of female charcters? I prefer female, but when the game is cool and demands male, I play as a male :D Anyway, don't ask why, cause I don't know myself :vlol:

Post! :wve:

In a fighting game I always play the chicks because I like the quicker "jump around like a flea" fighting style they usually sport. In an RPG I'd rather be a dude because usually love interests happen in RPGs.

Depends.

In a game like Tekken I pick the chicks because they are ALWAYS faster! Girls get one point.

In an RPG I like female leads like... oh, I don't know... Yuna? :p Girls get a point.

And in Sonic Riders my pick is always either Sonic or Amy. That's a tie then. Both genders get a point.

And in Viewtiful Joe 2 I always pick Sexy Silvia... because... errr... she has long-range weapons. Yes, that'll do. :mis: Girls snag a point.

And though I may be fond of Roll (a girl) from Mega Man I'd pick Protoman over Roll any day! Guys get a point.

And in Dragon Ball Z: Tenkaichi 2 my most-used character is Vegeta. The only girl I use in DBZT2 is Android 18. A point for the guys then.

And Ape Escape 3 forces you to choose a gender in the beginning. I chose the dude. Point for the guys!

GIRLS- 4
GUYS- 4

TIE!!!

Guess I like 'em equally then. :D

Um... it depends on their bios and their looks to be honest.

Sayin' that, I've started to learn old man Gen on Street Fighter Alpha 3 - his style's unique so I guess that's why I like him. Gen has two fighting modes you can activate at will. Old man Gen and spring chicken Gen. This means he has twice as many standard moves to learn as the other characters. On top of this, his special moves are split between the two modes.

I've rambled on a bit, but you get my point..

i usually like playing with a female character.
but male is fine too.
i,as a girl, think it's cool to play with a girl character in a fight/rpg/action/adventure game, couse girls can kick arse too, although in most games they are considered weak(er).
that is why i like Lara, she's strong (yet not at all butch) and cool, she kicks arse !!

Don't you just love it when almost always Japanese picture all Europeans as blondes or (light) gingers? Cassandra, Sophitia, Raphael, Arthur, Rock, Siegfried, all of them look like Vikings. Either that or weird unnatural ones, like green-maned psychopath, a completely white-haired alchemist or violet maiden with metal feet. And that doesn't end with SC. If I remember right, almost all Tekken characters from Europe are blond as well, plus minus Anna and Dragunov. Asuka from Evangelion? A tomato soup with cream. Mireille from Noir? Welcome to Corsica, haven for blonde mafia. And it does not end with Europe either... It is common for Koreans to be ginger-haired. And obligatory for villains to grow abnormal hairdo. It's funny how hair colour can spoil it all.

Really don't care.

To me if the character shows a more deeper level of inner developement and complex sides to his/her persona, then it is a well done character (regradless of gender.)

MGS would be a very good example of a game that blurs the lines between good and bad. No one can really define a bad guy in that game; They were all victims of their individual circumstances that shaped their own individual view of the world. The dept of each character in that game was just beyond anything that the gaming world ever concieved.

Other than that, its down to a character's abilities (especially in fighting games.) Quicker or Stronger doesn't mean better. I usually go for the balance of both or... devise my own strategy with the more brutally stronger ones.

True but then again Siegfried is German ;). Cassandra, Sophitia and Raphaael however have alternative costumes with different hair colours. Yeah not much of an excuse but they are there.

It depends what kind of mood I'm in. I'll play as women because they kick ass, and I'll play as men because some are good to look at...I mean, it makes a nice change from playing as female's all the time :) :p

True but then again Siegfried is German ;).

Yes, but that doesn't make him a "Viking", pardon the horrible simplification. I simply assumed that people commonly associate blond hair with Norsemen and/or Scandinavia first, and more rarely with Aryan image promoted by Nazi. You do get blonds in all European ethnicities, but I was referring to stereotypes, since obviously that Japanese tendency is a stereotype too.

Cassandra, Sophitia and Raphaael however have alternative costumes with different hair colours. Yeah not much of an excuse but they are there.

I would say that alternative costumes are not "canonic", at least if we were to look at official HQ renders. Especially since in SCIII you can get the characters whatever colour set you want.

I perfectly see your point and well yes its true that the image of Siegfried is your totally stereotypical one (Blonde hair Knight in Shining armor) but then again he is one of those characters that was ment to be as astetically pleasing as his combat skills (He as Nightmare in SC2 was the "No way you can lose" character.)

To put it in prespective, would people have reacted the same way to the Greek Hero Achillies in Troy if he wasn't Brad Pitt? ;) Its all marketing ma man. Yeah... again not an excuse but they do what works.

Then you haven't played as Raphael, Yung Sun or Cerventes in Soul Calibur series (or even Nightmare and Seigfried), or taking it up a notch; Ryu in Dead or Alive. Wayy too fast and thus can dodge for incomming attacks and fight back with such tremendous force. And to be honest... both Cassandra and Sophitia are relitively slow.

Eeerh, dude, I have NO idea what game are you talking about :D Anyway, I haven't played many different games lately, just KOTOR, KOTOR II, Tomb Raider (2,4,5,6) and maybe.. AOM (Age of Mothology). So, males may be cooler in some games, sure ;)

I prefer playing as both genders but in fighting games I usually always play as a female character. In RE1 I picked Jill before Chris but in RE2 I picked Leon before Claire. You have soooo many games to catch up to ;). The Soul Calibur and the Dead or Alive series have been instant hits with everyone. @ AmericanAssassin: Does Buffy the Vampire slayer have a game to it? Why don't I know.

Buffy has 2 games already ;) I've got the second one. But you play as multiple characters.

In games like dead or alive and tekken I mostly play females. They're faster and easyer to controll. In DoA I mostly play Helena and sometimes christy, and in Tekken DR on PSP I mostly play as Lily.
But in RPG I mostly play males, Unless I can't choose and you play as a certain character (like FFX-2). But in games like oblivion I prefer to play as a male.
and ofcourse I play Tomb Raider :p
But I mostly play games starring males. But not for that particulair reason. But I just like dark and eerie games like Silent Hill, Condemned and F.E.A.R. Ofcourse in SH3 Heather plays the lead. But I like that because she's not like the sexy stereotype kind of videogame girl.

Yes. In order it goes FF7, Advent Children (the movie), Dirge of Cerberus (a shooter game with Vincent as the main character).

About the main topic, I really don't care whether the game has a male or female lead. If it looks like I'll enjoy the gameplay, then I'll play the game. If a story-based game is done well, I can identify with the main character whether that character is male or female. As for RPG's, I usually play first with a character that looks and acts like me (so female) and then a second time through as a male character to do everything differently and see the other half of the story/sidequests.
