View Full Version : Video camera to PC
I have a Philips VHS-C video camera, and I was wondering if it was possible to upload a movie from the camera to the PC. Kewlkyle64 (you may remember him :p) said he did it before. But I was just wondering:
if it's possible, and
how to do it.If this doesn't belong here, would someone move it? Thanks.

Does your camera have DV connectors?
Steps for connecting a Camcorder to a PC using DV Cables.
Step 1
Turn off the PC before connecting camcorder to the PC
N.B.: If camcorder is connected to the PC while both are turned on, it may cause a malfunction to the camcorder due to over current.
Step 2
Connect the DV cable to match the shape of the DV terminal on the PC.
Step 3
a) Connect the DV cable to the PC
b) Connect the DV cable to the camcorder.
N.B.: The DV cable must always be connected to the PC first, before connecting to the camcorder. If the camcorder is connected first, it may cause a malfunction of the camcorder due to static electricity.
Step 4
Check the connections described in the above steps. Turn on the PC first, followed by the Camcorder.
VHS-C was an early tape format that was around at about the same time as Video 8. As it is an analogue format (not digital), you will need to use either an internal capture card or one of the newer USB devices to transfer your tapes directly to your PC. There should be some analogue sockets on the camcorder to enable this.
However, a much better way, IMO, is to connect the camcorder to a DVD recorder and record the footage to a DVD disc, then put that disc into your PC’s CD/DVD drive and copy everything to your PC.
Grab a firewire.
1. Put it into your pc 1394 slot and connect it yr DV camera.
2. Wait for a bit and your device will be found as most likely JVC handcam or something.
3. Open windows movie maker.
4. Click capture video.
5. Choose the quility. before clicking next set your camera to playback mode if your planing to record what your have on your tape to the pc. or leave it on record mode and record yourself or something.
@Kill Bill: Won't work. Fish's camera is VHS-C, there's no firewire connections on those. Paul's idea is the best option aside from having a local company performing the transfer for him.

:(
I have a DVD player but but not a recorder.
This sucks. :(
Oh well, I'll just use my digital camera.
Mods, please DONT close this thread - I still need it.
Ok, I found a port on the back of my PC. It's the only port that will work with my video camera cable. But it's not detecting the camera.
This is what it says above the port:

Is that the right one?
Can you post a picture?
Most likely S-Video connector...
Fish, what does the end of your video cable look like? Is it one of the ones below?

If it's one of these then your computer won't recognize the camera since they're video input jacks. in order for your computer to recognize a camera, it needs to be hooked up via a USB or Firewire cable. I doubt your camera (unless it's new(er) has either of those ports. If they don't, then you'll either need to get a transfer deck that is capable of transfering the video over, a new camera that is a MiniDV, have a professional transfer the footage over to a DVD or as Paul suggested, find someone with a stand alone dvd recorder. :wve:

That's what the camera end looks like, yes. The other end looks a bit like a parallel cable, except that there's pins sticking out of the port on the PC.
And to answer your question, EscondeR, my camera is a Panasonic PV-L452D.
So, Fish.
