Security Compound woes

the MP has been mugged by the inmates, I've picked up his security pass
and...now what?
I've read several walkthroughs and they just tell me to go through doorways.
I can't see anywhere to use the pass or any door I can open. Any ideas?

Are you in the room that the level starts out in, where Lara is surrounded by big crates, or have you gotten out of that room?

I'm in the area containing the control room with a switch on the wall, a corridor with three closed doors, a square area between the cell block and some locked gates. There are two hatches in the ceiling (that's how I got in). I can go back into the cell block but nowhere else.

After you pick up the security pass(which you dont use until later on) check the door to the left of the dinning room entrance. If the door is closed then walk up to it and hit the control button. The room with the large boxes is a movement puzzle. Run around the room, pushing the movable box beneath the hole in the ceiling. Up above the box room, jump the pipe and throw the switch on the wall. Swim back through the box room, and up through another hole in the ceiling. You can take it from there. Hope this helps you out! Sorry, but I've already read this in walkthroughs and it doesn't help. I can't see a dining room entrance and the only button is the one in the control room that opened the gate to the cell block (a dead end). There's no sign of a box room and the only holes in the ceiling are the ones I have just dropped through.
The closed gates opposite the cell block entrance look intriguing but I can't see any way to open them. Does this make any sense?

It doesnt make any sense to me, you cant be stuck with nowhere to go. Let me go back and refresh my memory by replaying that level and I'll get back to you.

OK here's the step you were missing, after you pull the switch and let the inmates in to kill the guard who drops the security pass you should see to the left is the area where all the cells are(the room in the very beginning) and to the right you should see a closed gate. This is the area you need to access, to the right of the gate on the wall in the dark is a device. Its really hard to see since you dont have any flares, but its there, the security pass the guard dropped earlier goes in this device and that is what opens up the gate. You can take it from there. Let me know how it goes!!

Thankyou so much Jenna. It works and after several weeks stuck in that room I have now ventured further afield. This is what comes of trying to play on a gloomy laptop screen - I just couldn't see the lock.

Your welcome! To be quite honest, when I went to replay the level for you I couldnt see it either. I had to adjust the blackness on the screen and lighten it up to see it!
