View Full Version : Anyone ever explain the bugsie-only health in the Colosseum?

The large area where you have to jump from column to column to make it over to where the switches are, I've always wondered about that health pack. I saw it the first time I played TR1 but didn't know how to get to it until about a year later when the Bugsie stuff was explained on some of the websites and on the usenet alt.games.tombraider newsgroup.

Did anyone ever explain WHY that was up there? Joke? Someone knew about bugsie and wanted to see if people got it?

Here's the area, in case folks are rusty on TR1, although I bet a bunch of you are replaying it before Anniversary hits like I am right now... I think this is probably my 30th time through ;-) BTW, ignore the window border and stuff up on the top, playing in ePSXe in Linux. :)

From what I've been told, the level designer thought that is was a reachable item until the playtesters said they couldn't reach it. But instead of fixing it, they decided to leave it in there as a joke. Ever since then they've been putting in other un-reachable health packs, like the one in TR2's Temple to Xian.

Too right, oops!

Yeah, come to think of it, I do recall in TR2 there was the healhpack in the last level you can't get to.. I forget if you can even bugsie up there to find.

Ah the fun days where you could get into places you shouldn't... Now it's all blocked off. :(

You can get the healthpack in Temple to Xian with the fly cheat. As for the one in South Pacific Islands, it's impossible to get no matter what. :(

I always wondered how to get that one. I thought it was reachable but I was only doing something wrong ^_^

Hmmmmm, fly cheat. Is this PC-only? Never heard of that one, except in Tomb Raider III with the SPU. :D

Isn't there another unreachable medipack in Palace Midas? The room where Lara runs over the collapsible tiles above the aquaduct, I though I remember seeing one there before.

^ You can take that one, as the floor below it is non-collapsible. Just jump to the medipack, take it and jump to another side of the collapsible tiles.

And where exactly is the one in TR3?

And where exactly is the one in TR3?

It's in Coastal Village. In one of the huts is a Large Medipack but it's IMPOSSIBLE to get coz it's sitting on top of some QUICKSAND.

Are there any inaccessible Medipacks in TR4 & 5?
There's also an inaccessible Chocolate Bar in AOD (TR6) in the Sanitarium level.

There's also some more in TR1. In the Atlantis level there are 2 Large Medipacks behind a door. There is a switch by it but that just triggers a lava trap.

The level designer has to make sure he got a good laugh after his hard work.

Game Tester: "I'm all out of medpacks and running low on life.........what am I going to do? Ooooooo there's one, on the high ledge that looks like a little too high. But it must be reachable if it's there in the first place!" *makes Lara climb around the room until reaches the lower ledge below* "Come on Lara you can do it" *makes Lara constantly jump for the higher ledge*

*watches from a one way mirror* "Muahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahah a"

Game Tester:"Just a little higher come on" *accidentally hits right direction button, and Lara side flips to her death*

Level Designer:*dies from laughing to hard*

Game tester: :cen:

And thats my explanation from my imagination! lol

I've never notice that medipack in TR2 IIRC, it's above and to the right of the big waterfall at the beginning of the level ("right" when you're past the waterfall and looking back at it). There's a "ladder" there that seems to lead up to it, but it's not real, if you jump to it Lara just falls. The med-pack is real, however; people have retrieved it using the fly cheat.

so now i know it really is supposed tpo be unreachable... until now i always thought I missed something or that I did something wrong to get it. damn, thats not fair to trick us like that ^^;

I think it's a good thing that some pickups are impossible. Otherwise, if you see an object, there must be a path to it. This way, we never quite know if we should give up or not. Ah, sweet mystery... :D

That's why I love useful bugs - maybe there's a path that not even the game designers know about!
