It's just an opinion, also It was very good for it's time, also brung a lot of people to love LC and TR, as it being the original.
And it had very realistic graphics for it's time in 1996 :D I just can't imagine that nowadays :p

I agree
and Lara was just WAY TOO HOT!!! :O
Because it was the original, and CD's ones, are not even close.
Guess you guys are right Tomb Raider 1 isn't my favorite personally but its still great game that started off a terrific series.
Because its the original and nostalgia blinds alot of people into thinking its the best. Doesn't matter how good any future games are. Some people will say the original is the best simply because of nostalgia. Others genuinely think its the best for other reasons though.
Because it's first!:ton:
:D :)

I like it cause it got me into the series.
Welcome.
Well I just finished playing it recently and you just get such a lovely feel once you've finished this great adventure. The levels were very well thought out, designed and still are! The only down side is the craptastic chunky graphics.
Graphics (Okay, they are old now, but I still find them beautiful)
One of the very first 3D games.
The fact that 6 people managed to do a game like that in 1996 amazes me. CD with their 100 employers have no excuse for making a short, easy game.
That's the one that started the WHOLE TR series.
Made me feel like I'm a clever player and not a zombie with a brain tumor.
Story.+ Don't forget the nostalgia for the old players ;)
Besides that it is a really good game overall, it's all a matter of opinion. :wve:
When it comes to TR1, what's not to love? The atmosphere has to be the best thing about it though IMO. Even Core themselves never truly managed to recreate it again. They came close a few times, but TR1 is still the high-watermark of the series to me :)

Well, just because its the first does not necessarily mean its the best, I personally find the 3rd one my favorite :) Tomb Raider 1 may have started it, but in my opinion Tomb Raider 3 really advanced the atmosphere, puzzles, and move set of Lara Croft (Tomb Raider 2 is a close second though!)
I like the tombs concept...I don't think any other game had that kind of theme at the time (am I wrong?)...the puzzles were unique and I love the way Lara moved.
I prefer two and three, but it's a close call when it comes to the first three :) .

I like TR the best b/c I like the idea of Atlantis not being the mythical one from Homer's tales but a mysterious Atlantis far older and superior than previously thought. It reminds me of Disney's "Atlantis: The Lost Empire" except the Atlanteans are not caring individuals but demon looking monster who want to kill you. The plot is original and the layouts of the level designs are beautiful (at least when the game first came out). :D

You just got everything in that list haven't you, well I agree with you, except for number 3.
Because it started the whole 3D adventure genre and for that alone it should be cherished and respected as a BIG influential part of gaming history.
And it introduced me to Lara - the world's greatest video game heroine :)
-In my opinion-
The music for one amazed me, the atmosphere that was created in this game was awesome. It was dark and spooky :) There was peaceful moments and adrenaline pumping moments that even the latest TRs dont seem to grasp quite as well as the first.
It was very well designed and the scale of the game was enormous, even bigger than Legend and Anniversary - if you notice in TRA the areas are much MUCH smaller, in height and overall floor area :( Tomb Raider 1 created a fantastic feeling of grandeur.
The original storyline was a plus for me too, and of course the introduction of Lara Croft :) This hard-edged, rebellious, intelligent female exploring this tombs encountering many mythological creatures.
I prefered the more slower movement of Lara in this game, she is waaaay too agile for her own good in the two latest installments lol. *Monkey-like movement* I also prefered the save system used in this game over any other methods - by using save crystals. It added to the difficulty and overall length :) Having checkpoints every 2 minutes makes it so easy and takes away that fear of, for example not being able to make that next jump you are debating with yourself [wondering if a secret could be there ;) ]. Anniversary, for example, has all the ledges highlighted for you *sigh* they might aswell paint them fluorescent too!
Sure Legend and Anniversary may look pretty but they lack in content, and go against the original progression of Lara's history and personality throughout the games in favour of the Movies' style.
Tomb Raider 1, obviously is a perfect example of what the games were truely meant to be about.

ditto. :tmb: espcially #3.
1 we're first interdouce to lara croft
2 we see lara world through her eyes
3 the theme to tomb raider music
4 first female game character
5 good levels in it
6 we see lara battle the t-rex
7 it fun game
8 the puzzle are good
the music is suspense we hear and see our first enemy
In three words:
1. First
2. Best
3. TR-attitude :tmb:
The reason why it's a classic to me is because i'd never played a game like it before. It had me captivated from the start i couldn't help but get drawn into the game.
Btw welcome to the forum :wve:
It doesn't. It starts out well, but loses all momentum towards the final reel
It only loses momentum when you get to city of the dead. Just getting up to that bit of TR1 takes longer than the whole of TR1 so if TR4 loses momentum then TR1 just plain stops. Plus once you get up to Citadel the game picks up again anyway.
TR1 is considered better than the others for the same reason Zelda fans prefer OOT to TP. Despite the fact that its clear that TP is better than OOT in every single way, nostalgia takes over.
I never really liked the other Tomb Raiders and gave up on them after TR2 (playing them that is I enjoy watching runs of the others).
Tomb Raider 1 had the best enemies imo. Atlanteans of doom! They may have been evil polygons but they always made me jump. I was very young when I played this and I remember rein-acting certain parts of it with a friend of mine :o I was young! I liked it because rarely had to fight humanoids in it which gave it a much bigger sense of adventure, fighting beasts and climbing huge rocks etc.
It was creepy as well, you knew something was going to jump out but you never knew when and when it finally did your pants would fill up in a blink of an eye.
When I used to replay certain levels I would be standing outside a room where a monster would trigger when you enter. I would probably be standing there for about 5 minutes until I worked up the courage to run in, especially on Atlantis.
Anyway, after that essay, this is pretty much why it was my fav game out of the series and around the era it was released.

I couldnīt agree more! Well said.
Other sequels are good (I found Last Revelation better then part 1) but this one started it all :). I still prefer open locations and real-based locations (thatīs why I donīt like Atlantis levels) and thatīs the reason I love AoD, because it feels real :)

whats not to like about it ;)
Basically I feel as many do that the story, nostalgia and atmosphere are the main reasons for the first game's current status. For me though, the characters contributed a lot to my love of the game.
Larson, Pierre and the other goons were all highly endearing stereotypes, and good for a laugh, even if I had to kill them in the end. Natla was a unique character who gained a lot of depth as the story progressed. Lara was (and is) a British aristocrat with a mansion, gobs of money and a passion that happened to involved raiding south American ruins with twin pistols, and that was quite clearly something we hadn't seen before.
And, of course, Atlantis.

I genuinely think that it was the best. Every room Lara would walk into in the game was designed amazingly. (Except for maybe most of the level Tomb of Tihocan.) I get bored with all the other Tomb Raider games that I play, but this one I don't think I'll ever stop playing.
I love how everything is gold...everywhere you go...sandstone/jewels....GOLD!!! Yaaaaaayyy.....unlike the dark dank TRIII :P
Atmosphere and intensity. Most other games just get more difficult with each new level, but TR1 also gets more and more intense the further you progress until you become totally consumed by it. The atmosphere of Atlantis and The Great Pyramid is so gripping that you can forget that you are just playing a game and treat it as a real life or death experience.

Maybe because it's what STARTED the franchise and in my opinion will always be the BEST of the series. Just so original. Wasn't like crowded with things to kill constantly or crazy ass puzzles. Wasn't always about getting to one point but finding out how. It just had very smooth play and always expect the unexpected with TR 1.. All the other games went way too crazy with things. I could play this game every year.. Actually... I do. LOL. I barely play the others.
Well thanks for your replys everyone i personally liked tr2 and tr3 better but 1 is still great and by way loving the new tomb raider at moment :)

cos of the atmosphere, the unique traps, the great and original levels, the perfect soundtrack and the best enemies weve seen in a tr, all make one special game imo
It's the best cuz it came out in '96. People back then were still dazzled by windows 95... Anything with more than 256 colours and they go wacky.
I would not even touch it if I was stuck on a deserted island today with only that game. I need the eye candy. TRA > TR1... Suck on that, Core Design!!!

Your loss. TR1 is at the top of my shelf. Together with TR2, 3, LR and Chronicles. AoD and Legend will have to suffice with collecting dust in a drawer. Still waiting to see where AE will end up.
The gameplay of TR1 far outweighs the eyecandy of TRAE.

The weight of graphics in games is equal, if not more significant than gameplay in games today. Gameplay outweighing eye candy is a thing of the past. Today's Lara has to be as beautiful inside as her outside.

Except we don't talk like that here. There are people from all over the world here, not just English speaking, that would struggle to know what you are talking about. Not Just 'todays elders'.
Great graphics don't always mean greater game. Eye candy can be used to cover for other flaws. Give me TR1 anyday :tmb:

I'm not saying people should choose graphics over gameplay. I'm just saying, given two games of similar design and gameplay, I would choose the one that's better looking.
And while people from all over the world can (and probably encouraged to) join this board, it is afterall, an English board. If you can't handle it, it'd be best to find one that's in their own native language.
But if it's absolutely necessary for me to speak in olden tongues, fine.
TO L33T OR NOT TO L33T... That is the question.
(old enough for ya?)
Fair dinkum the young bleeders gone bonkers. That is the answer!
Actually L33T is early 80's, and so precede's even Tombraider 1. Maybe you should catch up with the times? Maybe '1 4m 3l1t3 instead even?
On a more serious note, I don't think the original TR is all that great. Granted it ushered in an era of 3D adventure shooter games along with a new pop culture icon, the anniversary edition of the game has better graphics, production value, and equal if not better gameplay.
Most people simply feel a sense of familiarity and nostalgia toward this game which tricks them into thinking it is better than what it was...
The bottom line is, TRA is probably not gonna blow anyone out of the water (except that poor, poor crocodile) and it features everything that the original offered except maybe the originality.
TR is only best when there are no competitions. To an outsider new to the series, they would probably not enjoy the previous games as much. It may have been the holy grail of action adventure games, but when you get down to it, the holy grail is nothing but an old busted cup...
(Or, if you're a fan of Dan Brown, an old busted tomb. Which is exactly what the original was: old, busts, and tombs)
The list could be long, and nostalgia is definately not the main factor. I have older games than TR1 which I'm not fond of.
-Music and ambience. Nathan's TR1 soundtrack has simply been unsurpassed in the next 7 TR installments, period. It was as awe-inspiring or tense as what was going on in the game at each moment.
-Graphics. You can say it's outdated, but not many games in 1996 looked that good or were such a big step in 3D gaming. Sure, it had some flaws, but for the first of its kind, the graphics were amazing. Besides the Cistern and Maybe Natla's mines, the levels had much more color variation than TRAE. It was a cartoony style (for enemies too) that fit the graphic level perfectly. It wasn't meant to look real. Lighting wasn't realistic yet it worked.
-Pacing and control. This is one of the problems a lot of players had with the old games. If you found the TR1 controls clunky, the game just wasn't for you. Controlling Lara was a very important part of the game, and that's why the last 3 games didn't feel like Tomb Raider for me. TR1's controls lack the abilities that came in later games, but it was still precise in its simplicity. The rather slow and realistic movements (instead of monkey speed) made each successful jump and difficult climb feel more rewarding. It actually took time to get from one place to another. It was, as someone has said, a more tactile experience.
-Architecture. Hardly any part of the next TR games had scenarios that were as awe-inspiring as the original. TR2 and TR3 forgot about the tombs in more than one ocassion, and TR4 just went about it in a realistic sort way, in which everything felt smaller, less evocative and less fantastic, which was part of their charm. TR1's Egypt is very different to TR4.
The level layouts were miles ahead of the later games. Just play Palace Midas or Obelisk of Khamoon to see the difference and intertwined areas. There was more room for exploration.
The grid system was not realistic. But it was Lara's world! Who here can say the Tetris blocks are realistic?
-Nostalgia. But for the reasons listed above. If I had bought any of the other TR games first, I still would've liked TR1 better, I'm quite sure of that.
Because it's much different than the others

I think sometimes it depends on what TR game you play first. For me, TR1 isnt that special, as TRII was my first TR experience, and that will alway be my favourite.
Anyway, thats one reason.
I personally like Tomb Raider 3 the best i like outside levels even though its very hard game still best for me.
It was very different for its time. For a start it starred a woman (shock horror!). Plus, if you look at what games were like back then, you can see why it was such groundbreaking stuff. I also think that the T-Rex played a large part in attracting such audiences!:D
Everybody likes to shoot dinosaurs... You evil evil gamers... Doesn't Lara realize the archaeological significance of a living T-Rex? And all she does is shoot it full of bullets!
Whatever else Ms. Croft may be, she sure ain't PETA...
And one must love today's elders, who know how to use correct punctuations and definite articles... Get with teh timez pop! T4lk l33t, or be obsolete!!!:jmp:
Actually I´m not an elder (20 years old). I just believe that what you wrote before is a proof of your infantility. But it´s your opinion and I just think it´s sad some people believe that graphics is the most important thing in gaming world. I´m sorry if I offended you somehow...
I´m not a native speaker but I´m trying as hard as I can. Sure I will still make some mistakes here and there (some bigger than the others) but I´m still proud of myself.

I always felt it was the most ballenced and fair of the games, that had a difficulty that logical and intelegent, rather than resorting to tricking the player or over-complication to make the challenge.
Also what I utterly hate in games is attempts to try and pass a tricky, over-complicated and basically worthless system off as 'realism'. Games aren't realistic and that is the point. The grid system was mathmatical so you knew what you were going to get, rather than resorting to blind actions half the time. It meant you could line your motions up rather than having to pray you somehow made the jump or grabbed the ledge, which I had to do so much in Anniversary.
The other part of perfect difficulty is giving the player a fair chance with fair progression. Killing the player off every five seconds for tiny mistakes or resorting to purely sneaky means of progression is just harmful to the package. TR1's progression is just perfect, while with some of the other games, especially TR3, I struggled to complete dispite resorting to unsavory methords.
TR,1 as mentioned by the designer of it (I assume he is that anyway) in the commentry of TRA, is not about mazes and doesn't resort to anything similar. It gives you a single level with a fair amount of ground to cover without taking it to the point you could get painfully lost. From what I remember of TR:TLR you could cross levels, which essencially increased the game area to a size far beyond what was managable. I recall the futhest I ever got in that game without cheating was the great libery of alexandria or something like that. There is a limit to how much you want to slog through in a game like this.
Also a good tutorial is a must. It should inform you of everything you need to know and ensure that you don't find yourself confronted with anything unknown. Tomb Raider, with a simple yet effective collection of moves, was a solid example of this. TRA, as a counter-example, has a naff tutorial and if I hadn't already played Legend, I would have found the controls far too tricky to use for several hours. And there is no tutorial bit for wall running or wall run jumping, which meant in Damecles's room, I was stuck and there seemed no way to actually progress. I died around thirty times before I randomly discovered she could wall jump, then another ten trying to re-do it as I fell off the collum in shock.
Oh, and the most wonderful thing of all is the use of logic in combat. Lara isn't able to go toe to toe with, say, a puma or a veloceraptor, so there is an ample splattering of safe ledges where one can do the sane act of getting out of danger. The lack of ranged enermies until Sanctury of the Scion means combat isn't all about slugging it out and taking damage from every battle, something the later games, with a stupid amount of human enemies, fail baddly at.
And finally, nostalga is a wonderful thing. Tomb Raider was the second PS game I ever played and the one that really introduced me to computer games. I would not be lying if I said it actually had a huge impact on my life.
People like the first game becease it is the unforgetable game that started the series. :)

I have to agree TRII was my first aswell. What a great game but way to many enimes. Nothing like sudenly getting shot in Venice by a guy on a balconey lol. I do like TRI but the closed feeling creeps me out thats why i like Ani... Anyways i'l stop rambling...

Why? Its only the best TR ever. The atmosphere, the levels (Natla's Mine, love it! Atlantis, WOO!!)
Everything! Although TR2 is tough Competion.
I think the original was the best because not only was it your first experience with Lara and the "tomb raider" ideal, but because it was really the only one that stuck to the idea of the game. It was all secluded in ancient caves, and tombs and really captured the atmosphere of being trapped and thinking your way out. The sequels were much too open and airy, constant human interaction (bad guys) and being in cities does really spell claustrophobia when you literally could have just walked away. The original Tomb Raider is prolly my favorite game of all time, i don't think much of the sequels at all. cept for TR anniversary, thats a dream come true.
It was inferior to Mario 64 which was just being released in those days, but Mario couldn't run in an egyptian tomb full of mummies guns-ablazing! And everyone was immediately hooked by the Lara character. It was just a few years after Indiana Jones and the last Crusade, for those of you too young for having seen it at the movies, and the adventure character and its spinoffs were still strong as ideas.

I would not even touch it if I was stuck on a deserted island today with only that game. I need the eye candy. TRA > TR1... Suck on that, Core Design!!!
Have you actually played it? or have you just looked at it and dismissed it because Lara doesn't have undulating cleavage?
Actually playing the game is captivating. It transports us to another world with a competant, sure-footed companion - and she had to kill the T-rex's, or they would kill her.
TR1 was the perfect marriage of graphics and music to create a rich, gothic atmosphere you could cut with a knife. Nathan's music in the first three games played a HUGE part in creating this atmosphere and was really missed in the Anniversary edition. I'd loved to have heard his updated version of the soundtrack - why didn't they use him?
I really thought TRA could have at least equalled the original - not so, but have come to the conclusion that developers are making games for a different audience now. One that wants to replace gameplay with 'realism'.
For all its cinematics and wonderful atmosphere, I liken the original TR to the Super Mario games and other platformers of the day. The oft ridiculed grid system and block-pushing gave TR a purity of gameplay that the latest installments lack.
This quest for realism became synonomous with the TR series and the gameplay became more woolly with each new installment, culminating in the misguided AOD.
TRA was to go back to the original, but for me doesn't go back far enough. The grid system has gone; maybe I wanted to relive 1996, but most of all, I wanted to play a GAME, not interact in a sort of movie. And the grapple hook! Don't get me started on the grapple hook!
TR1 was the best because its simplicity and purity of gameplay reflected the platorming style of the day with successful integration into 3D, coupled with stunning atmosphere and music. Ten years is a long time and styles change. I don't think we'll see its like again.

I like tr1 but I love tr2 more.
For myself it was because you could take your time and really explore everything.. there were no time constraints or scripted events beyond those in the limited cut scenes.
If you didnt want to charge into that there large cavern then you could slowly walk into it , with guns drawn..
It just seems these days that all devs want to throw everything at you in the first two levels.
And just for the record it took me nearly two years of on and off playing to finish TR1.
Why on and off?? surely if I enjoyed it I would want to finish it. well your partially right. but also because you COULD get lost in it. Linnear it wasnt.

I Think Most People Like Tomb Raider 1 The Best Because It's The Original. My Favourite Has Always Been Tomb Raider 2 Though!
:jmp: :jmp: :jmp:
It's the unforgetable extremly popular 3D game starters of all time!!
Obviously, it helps that the first game was the one that started it all. Your first foray into the Tomb Raiding world is bound to stand out in your mind. And the added advantage of the first game is that for most (all?) people, it was a completely new kind of gaming experience. I know for myself that the first Tomb Raider has a much stronger "nostalgia factor" than the other ones I've played.
But I also think that Tomb Raider, the first, has more than just "beginner's luck". It's the quintessential Tomb Raiding experience. While most of the other Tomb Raider games are hit and miss in terms of their playable locations (Venice? London?), the first game had four solid raiding locales. The snowy caves of a lost Incan civilization in Peru? Perfect. The underground ruins of an ancient mythologically-inspired empire (sort of merging Greek/Roman history)? Perfect. The sandy pyramids and tombs of Egyptian mummies? Perfect. And you can't go wrong with Atlantis, even if it did turn out to be more of a flesh-fest than a sunken city. Point is, it won you over with its creepy atmosphere.
Plus, the game had a nice learning curve, easing you in with the Peruvian caverns, and then training you for the trap-filled funfest that is the final location, Atlantis.
Ultimately, I feel that just about every level of the original Tomb Raider is iconic. Some of them may stand out more than others, but I can't think of one level in that game that isn't a fantastic and classic Tomb Raiding level. The other games tend to be, once again, hit and miss in this aspect.

To be perfect honest, the first one is one of my least favorite TRs. I did play TR2 first, then the original, then the correct order. Maybe it's because of that. I only played it once, when I finished it, and didn't like much apart from the first levels.
It made TRA a bit better for me tho, I didn't really have much to compare other than the "memorable" areas, like people ask for the aquadut on Midas'. I don't remember that so I didn't miss it.

It's my favourite TR because (IMO) It has great features that no other game had for its time. Great levels, atmosphere. Best game I've had for a long time.

It is NOT the best in many aspects (see the other thread for my listing: "The original and the best?").

Yes. And not even Anniversary could really capture it to my disappointment though it did in some points.
Yaddiyada Anniversary did have better controls and stuff but still TR1 the best. No explanation needed though I still enjoyed Anniversary anyway.
TR1 is my favourite because it's original. It was my first TR game and i was loving that.I like locations and environment. And music in TR1 is amazing.Just it was the first TR game and it get me.

TR1 still delivers the goods even today, i know the graphics are a bit dated but i love them, and even though Anniversary is graphically beautiful theres no comparison.
