A huge dust storm blows across the Gobi Desert in northern China and southern Mongolia, shown here in this true-color Terra MODIS image from March 27, 2004. The storm is a long, curving cloud of tan roughly following the border between the two countries. The western end of the desert is likely the source of the sand and dust in the storm, as the rest of the desert is composed of shallow alkaline basins. Almost all of the desert's topsoil has been removed by these common storms, which then deposited it in northern central China.
