Hello. I've been working with the game all night and I've managed to figure out the basics in outfit loading. I downloaded Zac's Underworld skin and it's working fabulously in the first level.

I have a couple of questions. Apologies if they've been mentioned before, but there are quite a few pages here to read through. I'll go ahead and try to figure out as best I can on my own, but I'd appreciate any help.

1. I want to take screenshots of the outfits I'm using in game (i.e. Lara facing forward), but the camera will only point to Lara's back. When I try to move it via mouse, Lara moves with it and alas the camera stays at her back. Never mind. I found it. I have to download one of SparedLife's hacked camera files. :)

2. To edit an outfit or create my own using the original .chr/.dds files, I need to convert the chr to dds and the dds to targa, then convert the targa back to dds. I've downloaded one concerter SLConverter. I think that converts .chr to .dds. But I don't have anything that would convert the .dds to .tga and back again. Any links?

3. Is there a set of HighRes textures for the game that I could download and load into the game? I'd love to play the game with better looking textures, but I don't want to jump into making my own just yet. I'm practicing some basics with outfits and things and then I'll move on to more advanced.

4. Can I replace the Lara model with the Kurtis model? For example, can I put Kurtis in the first level in Paris if I wanted to or put Lara in the Sanitarium and have them be fully functional. Also, I imagine replacing the model means the game would read the sound files -- so if I did put Lara in the Sanitarium level then when I moved her, she'd have Kurtis' audio files? When she ran/jumped/etc. she'd sound like Kurtis. I'd have to remap the audio too? Or is the audio attached to the model and not the level and so the audio for Lara would work if I dropped her into a level with a bunch of zombies. :)

Would this be overly complicated? I'm all up for learning how, because it'd be interesting to have Lara battle the Sani Mutants for a change! Plus, it'd be kind of cool to play Kurtis in the Louvre. Any instructions would earn you many thank yous and fake internet baked goodies.

Thank you all for any help you can provide and all the help you've given so far with your tools. I've seen some excellent skins! Special thanks to SparedLife for the tools and Zac for the excellent Underworld skin I'm playing with right now. :)

SparedLife discontinued work on that project because he was able to get TexMod to work on AOD.

I loved playing as lara in kurtis scenes as well as lara scenes.

"3. Is there a set of HighRes textures for the game that I could download and load into the game? None that I know. I started some Texture replacement tools but discontinued that work when I discovered TexMod could be used on the game. Basically the textures are stored in the chapter libraries at their highest resolution (Lara.chr skin is a 1024x1024 DXT1) but when you set your game resolution the game scales the texture and loads it into memory at the scaled size. So a 1024x1024 with game settings to medium is scaled and loaded as a 512x512. Unfortunetly the actual textures on the props, floors and buildings do not start out in hi-res so they are already at low to medium resolution graphics. My tools simply ripped the library files and replaced them back but TexMod will adjust accordingly. You can use TexMod to rip a 256x256 medium-res and replace it with a 1024x1024 hi-res. Not to mention you can store all your hi-res textures in one TPF file with TexMod.

As far as I know you cannot exchange Lara with Kurtis to play as Kurtis in any Lara level. See below for answer to dox online's question.

Thought I did that somewhere?? Actually I have a custom Lara model that can be used as near any character in the game. She assumes the posture and movements of the characters you exchange her with. Go to the link below.

"Could this thread become stickied?"

It was at one time. Few people are interested in modding AOD and with the absence of Zac I doubt there is enough enthusiasm to warrant a sticky despite the monumental amount of information store in this thread. Someone would have to step up and basically take over what he did here.

"can somebody make laras braid longer in all laras because i love long braids(so long that it goes over her behind)"

Yes that can be done. The ponytail has 10 joints that can be manipulated but there are prices to pay. When you Adjust the length of the ponytail the texture that is used has to adjust to the new size, a longer ponytail means the texture has to stretch to reach.
When you adjust the length of the ponytail the calculations for animation of the ponytail does not change. This means the movements get a little less normal to just plain unrealistic.
The ponytail passes through her protruding behind if to long.

Normal:

Long:

http://www.spared-life.com/TombRaiderImages/LaraLongPonytailb.jpg

This is a custom model of Lara.chr. I renamed the Lara.chr to LaraD.chr to get this screenshot. Besides the Ponytail the skin texture is also modded to alpha out the backpack and the model is also modded to accept the alpha texture.

If you want to use the below model with the longer braid then unzip it into the chars folder (TRAOD/DATA/CHARS). If you intend to use it for any other model such as LaraD.CHR then you may need to start a new game, however a couple models are interchangeable I forget which but the info is in this thread somewhere.

By all means post what you have. Please don't give up on this thread quite yet. If one of the super AOD fans doesn't step up and take over this thread then all the good work put into it will go the way of the Dodo and Zac. I tried no enthusiasm modding back in the release of AOD and trust me without a dedicated AOD modding thread AOD modding is headed back to where it was before Zac rediscovered it. This place needs a competent person to keep the first post updated as an index to the thread so other will take interest.
I will post here and there just to keep it alive but I fear I may be the only one posting before long.

I like the swimwear because you can make it's appearance change to other styles. Like this:

This model uses several mods, the hair, the ":cen:" , the skin and clothes textures, and no accessories.

To extract the CHR files from the game you need TRWad's AODTextureEditor package which contains in the zip a file to unarchive the clz and a file to rip the model.

http://www.trsearch.org/Tools/

I have a custom Kurtis model that you are welcome to use.
Kurtis but with the Alpha channel activated. Use the alpha channel to create invisible skin texture areas. You should use my skinning tool to extract and replace the skin textures.

Its levels are NOT moddable, IT'S a real game level, a level that Core Design made!

Same with outfit!

And PLEASE, start posting in appropriate English, I needed almost 3 minutes to understand the main idea of your post!

I have chapter tools you can download from links on the first post of this thread. The chapter tools allow you to swap the default textures with custom textures. The tools however are out-dated since discovering that TexMod will work. I believe it was Aurimas who posted that on Youtube using my tool to replace some of the textures to candy cane, the download for a level would be huge and not likely to be available but you may be able to download the custom skin from the list of mods on the first post of this thread. If you would like to know more then please read the thread, it's big but there is a lot of information in it if you want to learn to mod AOD. If your only interested in downloadable mods then see the first post of this thread.

I certainly didn't mean that response toward you :p. Since your response was quick and to the point I was merely elaborating and/or extending to what you said. I was explaining the mod was only textures and how it was done. I only responded at you so you would know I was answering a response you were involved in already, just being polite :)

I do not want you to feel your not welcome to respond, especially in this thread since it needs all the help it can get so please excuse any misunderstanding I may have caused.

Checksum numbers are different for every Tomb Raider game, so there isn't a mod that works for every game. Then, you CAN make this mod, but you will need to edit textures THRICE, for every game. Every game has different textures, so, editing every texture will take time, but that will do. :)

As far as I know Aurimas did not release either of those mods (Denim Jacket with blonde hair, and Blue/White swimsuit). But he did release a Medic/Nurse mod of LaraD with the blonde hair, and a Pink swimsuit. If you can find the Medic mod then use the loader to rip out the texture and make your own LaraD with blonde hair (why anyone would want Lara Croft with blonde hair is beyond me).

TexMod can work on TRAOD, but it is very unpredictible because TRAOD assigns offset numbers new each time it loads, unlike TRA and TRL which has permanently assigned offsets. Someone could make a texMod outfit that works on their computer but it might not work on anybody else's.

I found that in logging mode the game assigns offsets to textures, but when you change the textures and try to insert them back into the game they may show up anywhere, or not at all.

It is much better to spend the time to learn to use the Loader (or download modded .CHR files).

There is no program for editing TRAOD models available that I know of. I hacked the model with the use of a HEX editor. I spent many months breaking down the models bytes to find exactly where things were located. The joints for the model are stored at the beginning of the model's data file. I wish i could help you more but I have no tool or program that will allow you to edit the model(other than that messed up mod). I do have many customized models of Lara available for download though and I will try to get LaraS and LaraD long braids up soon.

Having a wee bit of trouble grasping life huh? Since your coming into this AOD modding seen Ohh;'; about 4 years late how about at least trying to catch up before playing 20 questions? The Mod you reference is extensively used in this forum so information and links should not be hard to find. There are videos plenty on Youtube for you to watch but I doubt they will quench your thirst for plastering this forum with questions, I have no magical movie that will do that.

Please I beg you read this thread, a lot will be answered.

@Darkboy91,
Nice work on LaraD, was that TexMod?

@Kam, Melonie, Marvyn,

I don't want to offend SparedLife (I hope you understand me right, SparedLife. ), but TexMod is the easiest of all the texture editors. Of course, in MY opinion

None taken Kam in fact I agree whole heartedly that TexMod is the easiet not only that but you don't have to hack your game files to mod the game either although it's a different dog with TRAOD than Legend or Anniversary. As Marvyn has pointed out we did some extensive testing of TexMod with AOD and have found the unstructured memory loading of the game has made TexMod almost useless for modding the models. If you weren't planning on distributing your model (skin) mod then TexMod will be fine for your own use but with the various version of TRAOD and the various offsets AOD is loaded everytime it's hit or miss as to wether your mod can be used or not. My skin loader was not designed to be elegant but it does the job and the skins can be used by all versions with no troubles. The naming structure allows you to add descriptive names to your skins too.

Still I recommend TexMod to do all other textures like walls, props, floors, ceilings, so on... They do work from variation to variation and you can exchange the low-res with custom made Hi-res textures.

The thrice textures in this game are a used differently both Michiel and i have traversed the gmx files up and down. The first set is usually the level textures, in the first map the second set is the unused training area but I removed all the third set without effecting any of the game textures so I couldn't see any correlation with cutscenes as it was previously mentioned, with TexMod none of this matters anyway.

@Darkboy91,

I will put LaraS back in her regular swimsuit and upload with LaraD so you can use those 2 with long braids.

hmmm. I don't have a tr exe but I do have a TRAOD.exe, TRAOD_P3.exe, and a TRAOD_P4.exe. If this be your filenames also then follow Kam's good words except copy not move. Also you didn't specify what application folder, TexMod or TRAOD?

Right now your folder structure should be like this

\Eidos Interactive\TRAOD\bin\TRAOD.exe

Make it look like this also

\Eidos Interactive\TRAOD\TRAOD.exe

The more data you provide the easier it will be to help.

Can you play as the underwater monster from the level where lara got her wetsuit

There is a character swap tool floating around this forum somewhere. I've never used it, I've only done limited swaps like the dog and crow. When I got to the top of the roof the dogs flew away :D and some npc swaps. I did make a Lara model that can be swapped for near any NPC, normally doing this will make Lara appear with all her attachments but I removed them in this model.

I think I've got this right. In order to edit outfits as far as textures/colours and etc. I have to take the .dds files from the .chr and convert the .dds to .tga. Edit the .tga in Photoshop, save, and then convert the .tga back to .dds. After that, load the .dds file back into the .chr file using SparedLife's Skin Loader. Yeah?

I've been looking for a program that converts .dds to .tga and back again, but I can't seem to find anything. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thank you.

Yes,
TexMod for textures (walls, prefabs, objects (not guns)) and my loader for skins is best bet. Just remember a few important steps.
Do not change the file name structure of the texture my program rips until after the offset number EX: LARA.chr 442900.dds has 2 spaces between the r and the 4. After the offset you may do what you want EX: LARA.chr 442900.my skin.number5.winter skin.oct2008.dds (oh and leave the .dds extention)
Be careful to save the file back in the exact format for that texture including the proper number of mips, size, dxt format. If your not certain look at the dat file my tool creates when ripping the textures, it lists all textures and the data for each one.
Keep the models and there skins organized, the wrong skin on the wrong model will certainly muck the works up.
I have made several modded models that can get confusing if you are skinning multiple LaraD models. There are 2048 hi-res models and models with alpha channels activated. The best thing to do is create a whole new folder for each skin you are going to create and drop the chr and my tool (including the default.jpg) into it. Rip the textures right in that folder.

Nvidia makes several dds tools one of which is a plugin for Photoshop. I heard it doesn't work with Vista but I haven't checked for myself. For anyone with XP and some other graphic program besides Photoshop interested in the Nvidia dds Photoshop plugin you may be able to use it. Photoshop plugins can be utilized by many upper end graphic programs like Paintshop Pro. Check to see if your program uses Photoshop plugins.

The underwater monster is two .CHR files, one for the body and one for the large lateral fins. They are also completely different from the other .CHR files (such as Boaz, Carvier, Strahov Guards etc.) and the game will crash if you try.

Somewhere there are some pictures of the main body of it laying in the street at Janice's corner.

Yep, you got it.

If you don't have photoshop then you can do exactly the same with GIMP, for which the same plugins are avaliable. GIMP .DDS Plugin (http://nifelheim.dyndns.org/~cocidius/dds/) GIMP Normal Map Plugin (http://nifelheim.dyndns.org/~cocidius/normalmap/)

Another alternative is to use Irfanview (http://www.irfanview.com/) to convert from .DDS to .TGA. This can be handy because Irfanview has a plugins pack that includes a thumbnail viewer.

Then for the conversion back to .DDS you can use DDS Converter 2 (http://eliteforce2.filefront.com/file/DDS_Converter;29412), which I think has been updated to run in Vista. It is a front-end for the nVIDIA plugins but it works completely independently.

There used to be a tutorial that explained all this, I wonder what happened to it :confused::confused:

I used a HEX editor, a program like a text editor but for HEX code manipulation. You can make the backpack visible by extracting the skin from the model and clearing the alpha channel. I removed the backpack because the braids pass through it and it didn't look right

If you rename BOAZ_BIG.CHR to KURTIS.CHR and start the sanitarium level the game will start. Because of the large size of the monster and the small size of the landing where Kurtis starts the camera is inside the body of the creature. You can see the body move because of the animations for it breathing.

As soon as you move even a fraction the game crashes.

Probably in the animation calls, some models just don't have enough similiar animations to swap.

I moved a few things to get better views for these screenshots. You can see a few problems from these pics and the legs don't animate correctly. There are front and rear shots here.

I thought I'd make a simpler skinning tool and Lara model combination to help beginners ease into skinning AOD. This pic below looks normal right, nothing exciting.

http://www.spared-life.com/TombRaiderFiles/LaraTGA01.JPG

Well guess again; can't see what I mean? Of course you can't because the modification isn't visibly apparant. The skin texture is TGA not DDS. That's right no fancy DDS editor or converter needed to skin this model, any graphic editor that can edit TGA format will do.

I've modded the original Lara.chr and created a special tool to go with it which will allow you to extract, edit, and replace as TGA (cross your fingers). The model has been modified to work with an internal TGA skin and does not include a bump map but does allow for alpha.

Here's what to do:

Download the zip file http://www.spared-life.com/TombRaiderFiles/LaraTGA.zip

Simple Extraction method
Extract the contents into a new folder for editing
Run my editing tool
Click to TGA, select the CHR file, and click GO then wait for the "done"
Close my tool

Open the TGA up in your editor
Edit the texture
Save as 32bit TGA no compression

Simple Insertion method
Run My Editing tool again
Click to CHR, select the TGA file, and click GO
Wait for the "done"
Close my tool

The Lara.TGA.chr is compatible with any saved game using Lara.chr or LaraC1.chr simply rename to either. Rename to any other Lara CHR and use the SCU to load a new map. Not recommended you use this model for Kurtis or any other NPC

Rules...
The TGA file must be 32bit non compressed TGA

The Lara.TGA.chr model cannot be any other name when using my tool after editing you can name it any CHR name to play in the game but i suggest making a copy after editing and renaming the copy.

The TGA filename must begin with "Lara." after that anything you want. Example: the default extracted filename is Lara.TGA.chr.tga but you could save your skin as Lara.MySkin001.bikini.tga or for simplicity just save it with the default extracted name. I'm using this method in case I make a simplified LaraD, LaraS, LaraC2 or LaraC1 model so this tool will work also on them

Simple method to use the model:

Edit your texture and insert into the model

Copy the Lara.TGA.chr to the clipboard and paste to a copy

rename the copy to Lara.chr

move the copy to your TRAOD/Data/Char folder

You lack that database file, you must install the .dll to your win32 folder (some dlls can be just put in the folder where the exe that needs the dll is) You should be able to find the dll on the internet.

SailorTaurus
19-08-08, 15:51
Quite a few websites however say to never download individual .dlls from the internet for numerous reasons:
A) No official support.
B) May be broken.
C) Old and un-updated.

For safety's sake, i'd prefer if anyone who knows where the .dll comes from to tell me. The first few letters of the filename is a possible acronym, which leads me to believe that it's part of the Microsoft Visual Basic runtime, so i'll try downloading that and see if it works.

EDIT: Well, after research, it is a Visual Basic thing. Only problem is I have no idea which version of the Visual C++ to install.

dox online
19-08-08, 16:02
Just paste it on the place where the exe is, so it won't affect anything other than the editor that you put the dll in the same folder as. I think I have that dll but I will go and check to be sure.
If the dll was the one I downloaded, than I can assure you that it was included in windows xp but not windows vista.

I don't know of anyone besides myself who has ever messed with the models in this game so I'm afraid you won't find an actual UVmap but if you use my tool to extract the skin texture you should get a pretty good idea from there

Whahay! My first mod for AOD. Only snag is it's a bit of a D.I.Y mod.

It's a nude* base texture for AOD Lara using the textures from Underworld Lara (as well as alterations to the hair tone to match). The whole idea is that you then draw the clothes on top (by default there is an extra layer on top of the skin with the original AOD top and shorts on, in case you just want to play with the new skin texture).

You need to do whatever alterations and clothes drawing you want to it (if you just want the original AOD outfit, just leave it as it is), then save it as a 32bit uncompressed TGA file. You then import it into the game using SparedLife's TGA tool and instructions.

Unfortunately I can't post a screenshot of this mod as the last time I attempted this my PC froze, so if someone could upload a screenshot of it for me then I would be eternally grateful. ^^

Are you using TexMod, or modding .CHR files with the SparedLife tools?
I don't think that you will have any luck with TexMod, but if you use .CHR files then you need to make sure that you use one of the alpha-channel enabled .CHRs that SparedLife hacked.

Once you have one of those you can work with your layers as normal according to whatever image manipulation program you like. When you are done you will have to merge all visible layers and save the file as .DDS with mips.

The AOD modding tutorial is still AWOL, and SparedLife took his site offline, but you may be able to find help at the archived version of his site at the wayback machine:

It would be worth your time to learn how to use the SparedLife Skin Loader. If you have problems finding it PM me. The problem with TexMod is it is very unstable, so a .TPF file that works fine on your game may not work at all on someone elses, so it is useless for distributing mods.

Building custom .CHR files is much better if you plan to release your mods for others to use.

I found some model mods I had been working on but never finished on a series I call Celebrity Raider.

This was actually started as a test in bump mapping, thought it was a good skin to use. I modded the Lara model with a TGA skin instead of DDS and tried my hand at adding a bump map to TGA. I actually have a Lara model I saved as lara-TGA-bump but I don't remember if I got it working or not. This particular TGA model does not have the bump working but you should see where I was going with it.

http://spared-life.**********/screenshots/lara-thing.jpg

To keep in line with this theme I added a skin outfit to this stretch modded model of LaraS.

http://spared-life.**********/screenshots/laras-stretch.JPG

And if you've guessed the first two correct then here's a shot of the invisible woman. The byte that controls transparancy also makes it near impossible to do a custom skin. I spent hours trying to get the right combination.

Try these I modified the models slightly. The bump map is a camo design and I used the PSD Nvidia plugin to create the Normal Map. Also note the alpha is working.

The Lara Models in AOD do not have the alpha channel enabled by default. A couple of posts above I posted some modified models that support bump map and alpha channel.

Edit:
Yes with my alpha enabled model of LaraD you can do it. It's that little square under the lips and to the right of the buckle. To alpha out just blackout in the alpha the parts you do not want to see.

LeonS.Kennedy:
yes i know that

Here's another little tidbit I'm sure you already know. ;)
1. rename any NPC model to Kurtis
2. copy one of my front view saved games to the savegame folder.
(preferably a close one to a Kurtis level, like an Aquatic saved game)
3. Start the TRAOD SCU and make sure the debug keys box is ticked.
4. load my front view saved game
5. press Esc and at the menu press tab, scroll down to skip level
6. When the game loads the NPC will be facing the camera for a good front shot.

P.S. just try playing the game like that...

dox online:
Wonder if it is possible to get the evening dress using a hacked CHR file

Not unless you know a way to export the model to a modeling program and then get it back to the CHR file. I can do much with the model's joints and textures but HEX editing the whole model is a bit much. I was able to extend the jacket to a coat but the models UV also extended. Right below the jacket on the skin texture is the face which UV'd to the bottom of the coat. So no not without rebuilding the entire model.

In all the years of doing this I've only had a few cases where someone claims or implies it's their work (that's stealing) but for the most part gaming people are most honorable and give credit. I started modding AOD a few years back but I new very little about the structure of the game. When this thread was created I explored deeper into the models and skins using techniques I had picked up from other games.
My first direction was to create a better tool for skinning than the one I had made years ago which eventually led to the "loader" program I have now.
One of the projects I found myself obsessed with was getting the glasses on Lara during gameplay.
While attempting to find the glasses I discovered how to turn on the alpha channel in the skin texture.
With the help of Eidos, Catlantean, and Slayer I was finally able to turn the glasses on. The only problem was as Zac mentioned. you couldn't shade them like Margots'. This was due to the original model using DXT1 skins which don't allow for transparencies (the texture is visible or invisible). I even re-created the Lara models using a higher resolution DXT3 skins but even with DXT3's ability to do transparencies I couldn't control where the transparency was placed or how much visibilty the texture had.
Then I noticed a post where K^2 was having a conversation about DXT5. While exploring the Lara models I had noticed DXT5 support even though the game did not use it so with K^2's suggestion I modified the models to use DXT5.
The result is full transparency control over the entire model. An area as big as the whole model or as little as just the glass lenses. Allowing the glasses to be any color and any depth of visibility.

What an amazing game, this is why it's my favorite tomb Raider game :)

Using TexMod:
The problem with using TexMod to skin AOD is the tpf shows up just fine with your game but others do not see the custom skin. This is due to the game loading the skin at different offsets depending on which Lara model, which game version, what graphic card, what graphic setting, if your using external or internal models and maybe other reasons.
I tried TexMod on my DXT5 and changed several settings and still saw the custom texture. I'm thinking that if you use my DXT5 models in the CHAR folder with TexMod then anyone else using my models and TexMod can exchange custom tpf outfits. The hub has announced they will host many of my mods which will include the DXT5 (default) models. Using my DXT5 models has a few advantages.
The textures are Hi-Res
The textures have many of the next gen features without next gen graphics
The models will be uniform for all TexMod tpf
The glasses can be customized.

The glasses can be used during gameplay with my TRAOD.EXE which will also be on the hub.

Below is a sample DXT5 using TexMod.
1. The glasses are transparent and colored red.
2. Lara's skin is both glass and gloss (not practical but you see the abilitiy of DXT5)
3. Lara's coat tail is sheer the amount of sheer can be controlled
4. Where the gloss is and how much can be controlled with DXT5
5. The pants are just colored green nothing special just testing TexMod.

I'm hoping someone here is still interested in taking AOD modding to the next level and would like to try the DXT5 with TexMod so I can see if it's transferable from one person to another. If it works then all mods can be in TexMod.

1. The glasses are transparent and colored red.

you know that sukkel is the dutch word for mooron right *vlol*. But wait, that IS very weird. My AOD always had bump mapping, how in the world is this possible XD

OMG I was browsing through the thread and now I understand what is happening here, I had no idea I've started such a big thing! But here I am, sukkel! Yes it was my one and only mod for AOD and I really loved it. I don't know what I did differently but somehow I did. I really wouldn't know anymore WHAT exactly I did. Are you glad to see me back :). I've been modding alot on TRL/TRA and TRU so you could check those out too if you liek my modding ;)

P.S. I took another username because sukkel stands for mooron in dutch, so maybe you understand now :p

Good to see you back on AOD. Here are the TexMod instructions again

1. Download my DXT5 models and unzip into the CHAR folder
2. Copy your default TRAOD.EXE (any or all) to the TRAOD folder
3. Launch TexMod and load the EXE you copied into the TRAOD folder.

These are high resolution DXT5 models, they come complete with Body and Skin separate bump maps, Alpha channels full range transparencies (solid to invisible and everything in between), and variable gloss maps.
The tpf will work for others that download the DXT5 models, no more guessing or maybes. I've had another site test with 100% results.

Left hand side down the page a little:

http://www.sparedlife/TRAOD.com/ (http://www.sparedlife.com/TRAOD/)

If this is something you want to try let me know and I'll give you more help.

How is it possible to make Lara wear the sunglasses throughout the game? I really want that

There are 2 methods
1. Download the hacked EXE (TRAOD.EXE) and put in the TRAOD folder. The EXE is a V49 EXE and others have reported crashes with games of other versions. Also if you have V49 and the game crashes then you will have to UnCLZ your map files. No big deal just use Michiels UnCLZ.exe by placing it in the map folder and dropping the CLZ onto the UnCLZ.exe.

Method 2 much easier
2. I have several saved games using the glasses. These are barebones nothing but level skip to get them. Just unzip into the save game folder after backing up any you really want. Bottom of the page:

I saw what you said about DTX5 "models". Does that mean the "dds" files need to be saved using DTX5? I use DDS Converter 2 to make TGA files into dds (better compression) when I build 'final' tpf files in TEXMOD, and I noticed I could change an option setting from DTX3 (the default) to DTX5.
I've done reskinning in TRL, TR Anniversary, other games, and a little bit of TRAOD reskinning with TEXMOD; my TRAOD roblem has been others could not run my TRAOD skins.

When you extract the textures with TexMod use the default TGA. TexMod extracts in 32bit TGA which is good since you need to use the alpha channel for transparencies. Edit directly in TGA not DDS, no conversion needed, no worry on type of DXT, no mips to do just edit the TGA and save to the filename TexMod gave it as 32bit TGA. It's exactly like Legend, Anniversary, or Underworld with TexMod.
The whole reason for not using TexMod on AOD has been one of unreliability, as you say nobody can see your skin. If my DXT5 models are used along with TexMod your skins will be useable by others. Something to keep in mind is each model has 3 skin textures and all 3 should be in the tpf since the bump maps double as the gloss map excluding a bump map could cause your skin to appear different with someone else.
I only call them DXT5 models because I have forced the model to render in DXT5 by default. DXT5 is why you can get next gen quality outfits without next gen graphics. Next gen as in bump maps, transparencies, and gloss maps plus the high res quality of 32bit TGA which can also be 2048x2048 if you really want to get high-res.
Thank you for the questions and the interest if you have any more feel free to ask.

@SparedLife,
Thanks for the information and clarification. In TEXMOD I extract files in TGA format, and do my editing on the TGA files. I then save as TGA and make a 'test' tpf. Only after I am satisfied with the results do I convert the TGA to DDS format for going to a 'final' tpf.

SparedLife
05-03-09, 02:57
That's a negative on the DDS, you never ever have to do anything with DDS again in AOD when using TexMod. Just save the TGA and load with TexMod.

For example when you rip the 3 model textures with TexMod on the DXT5 LaraD.chr you will get one like this:

TRAOD.EXE_3783F413.TGA

Edit this texture directly as TGA and save as 32bit TGA with the exact name as above (ripped name)

Then tell TexMod to build the tpf. TexMod will grab the TGA and insert it into the game properly.

I understand what you are saying and I will do that for TRAOD. Once in a while I change a file name to make it easier to identify, with a corresponding name change in the texmod.log file, per example shown below

0xD4F9DE4C|G:\traod-tests\texmod\LaraDD.tga

This is not recommended for those who are new to using texmod as there is too much opportunity to screw up.

Hi.
First, does TRAOD work when you use the launcher.exe file that comes with the game?
Second, what operating system are you using (Windows Vista, Windows XP, Windows XP 64 bit)?
Third, does Texmod work with other games you own?

To run Texmod you MUST have version 49 or 52 of Angel of Darkness installed, and copied the TRAOD.exe file from the bin folder to the TRAOD folder.
Use the copied traod.exe as the texmod target application. I found I had to start TRAOD using the launcher.exe once. After that I was able to use TEXMOD without a crash.

Hope this helps.

If you updated your game to version 48 or higher you should have this folder. Using chr files does NOT require you to use TEXMOD to play.

Sorry that I haven't done anything, i've been pretty pre-occupied with Uni work. Summer holidays are coming up soon though, so I plan to finally get around to some AOD modding.

I want to make a high resolution AOD TRU lara texture replacement (like the TRU skin replacement .psd that I posted a while back). Looking at Mokono's screenshots makes me want to give her the TRU swimsuit. lol

A question though. I've seen many people rip the Lara model from the game and use it in their own applications (such as 3DS Max). Most of the time the AOD textures are kept in tact, so I assume the UV map is also kept in tact. With that in mind, shouldn't it be possible to "render" out a UV template for AOD lara (like use UVMapper or something)?

Here it goes... Using Texmod, it will replace the game's custom outfit from "The Vault of Trophies"... It's like an infra-beta version until some friend from the TRA Modding thread gives me the textures for the anniversary wetsuit.

As the sola logo is messed up, unless i make the eliptical thing too little to handle text on it, i'm gonna keep working to solve it. However, the chances of looking straight to the logo at The Vault of Trophies are from slim to none.

It's a real shame you have to frame by frame the cutscenes to get a decent facial screenshot of Lara. I thought that screenshot showed off the shiny green top nicely also.

I have made maybe 500 texture skins for the NOLF series using various techniques to simulate a variety of fibers. I like TRLegend in Peru because the outfit there is very modable with fiber textures. With bump maps and fiber techniques you can even use the same pattern several times. TRAOD's jeans model has a decent jacket that's pretty good for this also. It's too bad the pants are not full textures though. Here's a coarse fabric that I made some time back using a cross-stitch bump map pattern.

It's really amazing how you made the glasses to fit with the top, and that jacket looks like the one from another popstar (oh me, i'll forget about popstars), maybe because she's very glamourous herself.

¿Is that jacket for Download already? It's like a nice alternative for playing with brand new contempo-casual clothing... Like that pack of costumes for the 360.

oops sorry I wrote over it, it was 3 layers of patterns which includes the cross-stitch bump map.
Do you know how to rename the textures to your TexMod values? If so I have a few more to show but not all screenshots. I've also included the bump map I used for them.

Thanks, and yes. I've read a lot from your website. I've just joined the forums recently because i wanted to give a second chance to AOD, and that wouldn't be possible if it wasn't for this thread. Your tools are so cash, and i would like to keep learning. I've also tried so hard to make my Doppelgänger a Bump Map, but when saving the dds and porting it to the .CHR, Lara goes messy or the game crashes.

Anyway, thank you again, Spared Life.

You are using my loader tool, yes that can be tricky. The thing with the loader tool is I have made so many model variations that you can get them mixed up easily. The best thing to do is rip the textures from any model you use so you know the exact location where the texture goes.
I think you will find it easier to use TexMod with my DXT5 models. The DXT5 models provide more capabilities than the normal models and used with TexMod there's no chance of corrupting the models. You don't have to mess with DDS/Mips/DXT or any of that stuff, just extract to TGA with TexMod, edit, save as TGA, and insert with TexMod.
Of course you can use the loader with my DXT5 models too and utilize all the features of DXT5. The 2 major differences I can think of is you have to use the DDS format when using my loader and you edit your models with my loader.

The normal map is a great feature. The RGB channels are the bump map which can be used in conjuction with

to make the bumps work. The alpha channel of the normal map is the gloss map which determines how much light the texture reflects or how shiny it looks like the green top.

Oh, why should i wait to rewrite this when it's still Sunday here?
Well, what i wrote used to look like this:

You don't have to mess with DDS/Mips/DXT or any of that stuff, just extract to TGA with TexMod, edit, save as TGA, and insert with TexMod. Of course you can use the loader with my DXT5 models too and utilize all the features of DXT5.
My knowledge of MIPS goes from slim to none. In my opininon, DXT5 rocks, as you have already shown here. Also, what TexMod does not have (but your loader does) is the .CHR management. I mean, first i was intended to make just one skin (the sola one), for just one single level (The Vault of Trophies) and just for myself, but then saw the solidarity you guys had here and i don't know, just got it posted, even when it ain't perfect.

The 2 major differences I can think of is you have to use the DDS format when using my loader and you edit your models with my loader.
First i was like so in TexMod, because i've got used to it; albeit, when i followed the instructions of how does your loader works and then downloaded that plugin for the Photoshop, i liked your loader far more as it gave me full control of all the models in all the levels, and also has that display capability wich comes in handy. Your loader also played a decisive role in my will to make the doppelgänger, i mean... i would have had it on a .tpf, but then i wasn't interested in playing with her. Instead, i wanted to make a .CHR file of it, so it can be "another" character in the plot: just imagine the you can trust me, Lara Croft with the nephilim turned into the doppel. but, there she was with googles and all kind of stuff, so, again, i wen to your website and saw the no attachments model of LaraD.CHR, it really thrilled me.

The normal map is a great feature. The RGB channels are the bump map which can be used in conjuction with
http://www.sparedlife.com/images/TRAOD-GLASSES.EXE_0x4DB83E25.jpg
to make the bumps work. The alpha channel of the normal map is the gloss map which determines how much light the texture reflects or how shiny it looks like the green top.
I remember i enabled the gloss on my doppel when using some of your models, but it just made "glossy" the clothing and the eyes, so i think i must keep learning from hte results posted here and in your website.

Well... Now i must been off for like 7 days, because i have to take those 6 exams, but i may keep responding, but not modding so, overall, thank you again, SparedLife.

Yes I can.
You have to tick the remember me box, for some reason this forum has trouble with keeping the login status.

The points you mentioned about my loader are valid and I'm glad you like using it. If you are using the loader with my DXT5 models then double joy.
What you might fall victim to if you use the default CHR models is they are DXT1 and DXT3 textures which could cause you problems if you save your textures incorrectly. There is a log file that my loader creates with the DXT type, size, and mips for each texture it rips from the models. If your having trouble with the bump map look at the log file for all the specs you need.

I look forward to seeing more from you.

Sure... But until then, i'll leave something for you.

Here's a scanned Converse shoe (i'm not supporting the brand or claiming it, i mean, all right reserved to them btw), just in case you feel like you want Lara to have brand new boots.

Also, here's some detailed zooms to the fiber of the cloth:

Hope they all come in handy. Now must leave, my first exam is within 12 hours.

Edit: I made a PNG with the textures, so everyone can use them to mod whatever TR they like.

Well, epistemology is the last exam i must take before being free to try to mod again. At least i'll have both times to mod and study after then, but i may need to figure out how to equilibrate both.

However... I took a break today and last night, but i failed at giving Lara the converse boots. I also tried to create a skin for the LaraC2.CHR model, but it's too freakin' hard. I mean, what's with that model that makes lines blurrier and set pixels on the wrong direction? My sola outfit it's finally done on the LaraS.CHR since i found the TRA textures on the wild (thanks, interwebs), it has some pixels out of place, but i can't expect it to be perfect. The Sola suit has the same bumps from Sukkel's original .CHR

Here's a screenshot of both the Sola and the Petro Zilla's linen jacket Paris Hilton wore the day they released her from jail (notice the boots fail).

Hi there! How was your week?

Wrapping tahat was a little headacheing, but remading the whole thing (with the new scanned textures) worked better than with the previous (photo camera).

Now i'm trying to make a Janice-Amanda, or Boaz-Natla, or my glossy doppelgänger with your DXT5 models.

I wanted to ask you something before... And it's why is this thread so deserted; i mean, i've been reading previous posts when a lot of people used to mod and post, but, suddenly, i spotted drama and stuff i could not understand. Can you clarify this to me? Please send me a PM.

Good work on the clothing, I never thought about cross game mix matching but looks like it worked out.

How you figured out where the buttons should be placed?

The first time I put the texture on the buttons were in the back like a straight jacket. I offset the texture so a seam was in the middle of the shirt and set them along the seam. I also made them oblong because the middle one stretches horizontally. Another throwback from the eighties - those wooden barrel looking buttons

Oh, really? I never thought on testing textures like that i just cropped and wrapped them xD. The Petro Zilla's Linen Jacket of Paris was so messy that i almost give up the whole thing, then i was like wrapping, unwrapping, saving, testing, escaping AOD and such as... Your loader was a real blessing when i got tired of TexMod and started to load the .DDS and then going straight to the lvel with the SCU.

I could say that your loader Spared my Life :D.

Hello!
Let me quote SparedLife from his website...
Getting the glasses on Lara

All Lara models can wear the sunglasses during game play. The glasses are an attachment just like the guns, crowbar, and goggles. I couldn't figure out how to activate the glasses on the model by modifying the CHR but I did manage to find an attachment definition in the EXE files that could be substituted for the glasses. Like most mods for TRAOD this does not seem to work from version to version. You may not get the results your looking for. For best results use the UnCLZ.exe packaged with Michiel's AODTextureEditor. Put it in the maps folder and simply drag and drop the CLZ files onto the UnCLZ.exe. This includes the cut scenes (copy UnCLZ.exe into the cutscene folders)

The .EXE file can be found on his website (http://www.sparedlife.com/), but the download link, if i'm allowed to post, is here (http://www.sparedlife.com/TRAOD/Patches/TRAOD_hacked.zip).

For further information, do not hesitate in contacting him ;)

Mokono I keep encountering the problem that the Texture Editor can't find a certain File and therefore won't open. Did you have this problem???

U mean the D'OH SH%T HAPPENED one? Well, that's probably because of your antivirus. You'll see, when trying to log in with TexMod, a .tmp file is created somewhere; although is harmless, some antivirus as McAfee or BitDefender (sometimes) may remove it. I strognly suggest to use SparedLife's Skin Loader. Click on the link above to know more about it.

The D'OH SH%T HAPPENED message aalso appears if you select the wrong exe file as the texmod Target Application.

Be advised that to use TEXMOD with TRAOD, you have to copy the TRAOD.exe file from the bin folder and put it in the TRAOD folder, the use the TRAOD.EXE file in the TRAOD folder as the target application.

*How to use the loader (http://www.tombraiderforums.com/showpost.php?p=3299495&postcount=28).

*The files should be placed where the Char folder is in the game (within that folder, of course).

Boaz Includes:
BOAZ.CHR
BOAZ.chr 108860.Bimbo.dds (modded)
BOAZ.chr 108860.dds (normal)
And 2 .jpg files that the Loader uses as a preview.

Larson includes:
Kurtis.chr
Kurtis.chr 147020.Larson.dds (modded)
Kurtis.chr 147020.dds (normal)
And it's respective previews

Warning: Do not rename the files, just place them into the char folder and the loader will do the rest. If you don't want the modded skins anymore, just load the normal dds included in the .rar. DO NOT DELETE THE NORMAL SKINS INCLUDED. If any issue, please let me know here... Enjoy!

PS: I haven't worked on the Petro Zilla's jacket mod, but i may release the Converse anyway this week.

Have a nice day!
