Very nice work, Mokono. :tmb:

But please don't double post - use the Edit button to modify your post instead.

Thank you very much, Mokono! Just a question, how'd you get the pink glasses? I would like them if possible. EDIT: and may you kindly make it into a chr file?

You can also just download one of my saved games that has already activated the glasses. The glasses are solid black by default the pink transparency is part of the skin mod for the Lara DXT5 model. If using with a saved game keep in mind the saved games are barebones generic I just skipped through the game using the level skip cheat to get them.

Spared Life, i've tried everything to clear my doppelhoe's atatchment, but i'm not making it work. I wanted to know if you could do it for me. If so, let me know and i'l PM you the download link of it. Also, thanks por pointing your savegames out. Another question i was wondering if that if you mind if i link to your website or quote it when needed. Let me know please.

Clear the attachments? Are you trying to use Lara in the place of another model? Or do you mean the attachment texture? As in backpack, straps, or something, like how I alpha out Lara's backpack so it doesn't show on the model.

The TGA has no alpha and the DDS has a blank alpha. To remove the attachments you need to make that part of the texture's alpha channel black. For instance to remove the buckle, select it in the diffuse map then toggle to the alpha channel and color the selected area in the alpha channel black.

@ Mokono, I meant if you could release the converse outfit as a .chr file, not the glasses. And is it possible to make it work with the "full install" option? The one where it doesn't require a CD?

Mokono

And is it possible to make it work with the "full install" option? The one where it doesn't require a CD?

Actually, that's the way i've been working (without a CD). The game is full installed on my HD, so all the files and folders are placed into C:\Program Files\Eidos Interactive\TRAOD and, therefore, reads the Char folder in the HD instead of the one in the CD.

Would you mind if i release the Converse .CHR this Thursday? University got me busy with some surprises.

Have a beautiful week and thanks for posting on this thread :)!

OK, thanks. And I was talking about if Spared Life could make the hacked .EXE work on the full install.

SparedLife
13-05-09, 23:06
You can already use the glasses in the full install, simply follow the below instructions.
The only hacked EXE that works with any degree of dependability is the TRAOD.exe, I named mine TRAOD-Glasses.exe and put in the TRAOD folder so I could use it with TexMod. When you do this you will need to Un-CLZ all the maps and cutscenes. Put the UnCLZ.exe in both folders maps/cutscene and drag and drop each CLZ one at a time onto the UnCLZ.exe file.
Any saved games you now have will still load without the glasses but as you play the game through you can save with glasses. Anyone who uses your saves will get the glasses even without the hacked EXE but will likely lose them on the next level load.
You can even use the hacked EXE with the SCU, which is what I did to get the saved games.

Actually, I have a Wittgenstein exam on Thursday, so i'm releasing it today...

Converse beta mod
http://img207.imageshack.us/img207/5593/convrelease.jpg
Converse.rar - 2.38MB (http://www.zshare.net/download/59988696704578df/) (Needs SparedLife's Skin Loader (http://www.sparedlife.com/TRAOD/Tools/Loader.zip))

Converse.rar includes:
LaraC2.chr DXT5
LaraC2.chr 350040.Converse(bumps).dds
LaraC2.chr 350040.normal(bump).dds
LaraC2.chr 1835632.Converse(model).dds
LaraC2.chr 1835632.normal(model).dds
And the previews for the 2 models

Warning: This is a DXT5 model of Lara, that means that those .dds can only be applied to the given .chr. You need to load the model you want and it's respective bump. PREVIOUS SAVEGAMES MAY NOT LOAD "CORRECTLY" (NOT AT ALL).

About...
DXT5 Lara is a discovery of SparedLife and it can support bump maps, gloss, transparency & HiRes textures.

I don't get you spared life, what that UnCLZ.exe? And if you don't mind, Mokono, may you please make it into a .chr that you don't need other programs with. Like you can just rename it to the model you want it to replace, in the chars folder?

And if you don't mind, Mokono, may you please make it into a .chr that you don't need other programs with. Like you can just rename it to the model you want it to replace, in the chars folder?

Oh, i think i can see your point, but i also have set one for my self at releasing the mods that way. All you want is to play that outfit without using the loader; that means, by renaming it into whatever LaraXX.chr you want so you can use SCU to make it run in whatever level you want. Am i right? Well... if that's the case, sure, just click here (http://rapidshare.com/files/232887608/LaraC2.chr.html). But you must know that this thread used to have more than 2 active modders and, even if this thread looks deserted, i have the hope that others can get into AOD modding. That's why i've been releasing special .CHR with normal and modded skins (and it's previews, wich are displayed by the loader) , so it would actually be easier not just to play, but to mod as well. Even if that's the case, i can not blame anybody for that... Although i just own the xbox versions of the last 3 games and not the PC ones (that means i've never mod them), i may be able to say AOD modding is relatively harder than TRL, TRU or TRA.

But that's out of subject, what my point really means is that i found more tedious having to rename like 12 LaraD.chr everytime i want to run those mods than actually load 12 .dds over one single LaraD.chr (not to mention that everytime you load a skin, it remains on the .chr unless you load a previous one, wich i've been including too, or delete/replace the .chr). So it's not that i've been misunderstanding you. I just wanted to standardize the way AOD mods ought to be released.

Another thing that can not be ignored is that the only way to make a .chr file from a .tga or a .dds is with the skin loader. There's no way TexMod can do that.

Maybe i should make a youtube tutorial if the SkinLoader is really that hard...

tombraidergale

I was trying to mod the LaraC1 model, all worked fine, I edited the .dds files and then I saved them. But when I tried to compile the .chr file... this message popped out xD Why? (P.S: it's my first try to mod AoD, maybe I've skipped some stupid things xD)

Hello & Welcome!
I think that happens when the .DDS can not find it's .CHR or when the .CHR is not the same that was used to extract the .DDS

i may have not a lot of time to make the promised YouTube, but i can post images.

Another issue may be that you didn't check the MIP maps or the DXT... So ¿what are these? i'm making some screenshots that i hope might be able to help you.

Oh, i also forgot to ask you what did you do; i mean, step by step, so i can recognize something.

PS: And there's not such a thing as skipping stupid steps, they are called mistakes, and they makes you and me learn the propper way.

tombraidergale
14-05-09, 18:42
These are the steps that I've done:
1) Opened the Loader, clicked on "to DDS" and selected the LaraC1.chr model, then I clicked Ok.
2) Opened the DDS file, edited it, saved it. (without changing its name)
3) Opened the Loader, clicked on "to CHR" and selected the DDS file that I wanted to add. (the LaraC1.chr file still in that folder) Then I get that stupid message xD Maybe it's MipMaps fault, I've checked in the options of the plugin to export DDS files, but there are many options about MipMaps and I don't know which one choose xD

http://i40.************/30topk9.png

Which one should I choose?

Mokono

I see, i've been using a different plugin (The Nvidia one) for Photoshop...

Try to disable the white square that says generate mipmaps.

Wait, I have also PS xD Now I try to download the PS plugin, let's see if that'll works...

EDIT: Ok, now it works, but when I try to run the game with that outfit, the game crashes -.-' I think that it's the destiny xD All the mods that I've tried to do for the last TR doesn't work or they weren't as I wanted XD

Mokono
14-05-09, 19:55
This are the steps for modding AOD with the loader.

Step 1
You must have SLTRAODLoader.exe & Default.jpg, both files work together, no other .jpg will make the Loader work. Also, you must have the .chr you want to mod, i picked LaraC1.chr for this tutorial like thing. So here they are...
http://img520.imageshack.us/img520/5813/29153456.jpg

Step 2
Open the loader and click the To DDS button, select your .chr (i'm using SparedLife's DXT5 LaraC1.chr), then click GO.
http://img294.imageshack.us/img294/9962/95934056.jpg

Once they are made (it takes a while), you'll get this screen. Then, close the loader.
http://img144.imageshack.us/img144/3567/36063523.jpg

Also, the following files will be extracted to the folder.
http://img364.imageshack.us/img364/1313/32423785.jpg

Step 3
There are 2 main files that are bigger than the other ones. Those are LaraC1's main textures template (LaraC1.chr 299980.dds) and lara's bump main template (LaraC1.chr 1698136.dds). The other ones are the guns.
http://img520.imageshack.us/img520/226/82725354.jpg

Step 4
Mod as you wish whatever .dds you have chosen... I pasted a pawprint over Lara's Shirt. You can add a distinction to the name of the .dds file you made. I saved it as LaraC1.chr 299980.paw.dds.
http://img520.imageshack.us/img520/3725/54407891.jpg

Important Step 5
You must go back to the folder and open with Notepad the LaraC1.dat that was made alongside with the .dds; then, search for the name of the .dds you modded (in my case is LaraC1.chr 299980.dds). The file has written on it the properties of the DXT (if it's 1, 2, or 3) and the mipmaps.
http://img2.imageshack.us/img2/2905/74366770.jpg

Once you know the values, select them on the save options.
http://img254.imageshack.us/img254/2788/14521704.jpg

Step 6
Open the Loader again and click on the To CHR button, pick your .dds and then click GO.
http://img520.imageshack.us/img520/5599/23674963.jpg

Step 7: enjoy!
http://img254.imageshack.us/img254/8761/36080134.jpg

I also made display that the Loader can recognize. The .jpg needs to be 345 x 529 and be named after your .dds; for example, i created LaraC1.chr 299980.paw.jpg. you must save it within the char folder (or wherever your files are).
http://img254.imageshack.us/img254/6581/54619097.jpg

Hope comes in handy!

Very nice tutorial Mokono, did you resolve the alpha issue?

Edit: Found combos, corrected
There are two combination of models that can access each others saved games. LaraD.CHR loads with LaraC2.CHR also same reverse and Lara.CHR with LaraC1.chr. With the proper combination you can rename say LaraC2.chr to LaraD.chr and still be able to load a LaraD.chr saved games. Any wrong combination from a saved game will result in a crash. You can however start a new game with any Lara renamed to LaraD

Hello SparedLife, well the alpha issue has more to deal with the guns than with the model itself. I'm not sure that i can make glossy the parts of the body that i want to gloss, but i also could not figure out how to black out the guns like you did with the Larad.chr that can be used as Kurtis. (i want my doppelhoe to replace Eckhardt or Karel, not for playing).

However, i went into serious business with the awesomeness of your DXT5 models. I'm actually releasing soon a new mod based on your DXT5 LaraS.chr and here it is. The only trouble i got is that when she's underwater, the catsuit turns a little transparent and reveals two mayor circles on her chest that i haven't been able to blackout from the texture template (i think it uses the lips textures to render it). And as i'm not desperate for a permabann due to nuderaidering.

Albeit it looks decent outside The Vault of Trophies.

WHOA, that's pretty awesome Mokono, I like it. Yes my DXT5 models do have some drawbacks with the next gen effects (water).

You are inquiring on the Lara models used as NPC's I don't have any DXT5 models of those. In fact I don't know if I even have the models anymore, I'll check to see but I can still make some I'm sure. I actually modified those models by removing the attachments completely from the model; the guns, scuba gear, and others. It was a long process of HEX extracting each attachments bytes from the model. If I can find those CHRs I can convert them to DXT5 and get them to you.

Once again you are amazing my friend - thanks for the support.

Have you seen my front view saves? They let you position Lara with a front view camera.

Found my LaraS NPC model, I had 3 versions no guns, one gun, 2 guns So I'll have to test and convert to DXT5 for you.

I'm so glad you like it, i think it makes a little justice to the goal of this thread and the discoveries you made. I'm also thankful that you can help me with my doppel. I'm thinking in making more detailed tutorials, so an average visitor can make outfits like this by it's own. Then, maybe we can contact those from the starting pages of this thread to tell them the news: AOD MOD RELEASE THREAD IS REBORNING. There had been dark episodes here, but the visits are increasing, and i'm making some time lapses to mod that doesn't affect my grades.

PS: The DXT5 should be standardized as it's the format that uses all the capabilities the game offers.

I did find the NPC LaraS.CHr with pistols

http://i698.photobucket.com/albums/vv348/sparedlife/SparedLifeScreens/LaraSnpc.jpg

and as you can see I have converted it to DXT5. This model will no doubt not be compatible with any saved games (Kurtis) for example.
Also if you use TexMod the skin offsets for my DXT5 LaraS.CHR will most likely not line up.
I used the SCU to load the game and then loaded a front view camera save just before this Kurtis level. Then used the SCU to level skip to the Kurtis level so I could get the front view. Then saved the game front view.

Sorry about the pistols I did not find an accessory clean LaraS.chr - I did however remember another site I had LaraD NPC on and have that now. Were you interested in a LaraD NPC in DXT5?

Mokono
15-05-09, 04:48
That comes in handy! Thank you very much.
And yes, i'm interested. I mean, i have no idea abou hacking, hex strings and such as... I'm very clever and messy with it.
Thanks for the savegame too, although my save folder is a mess full of saves that can load or not, because all my testing, renaming, etc.

I already have your LaraD NPC. And i had so much fun replacing it with other characters.

My doppelgänger is a Lara.chr, do you have it?

I also PM'd Mytly asking if the catsuit could be considered NudeRaider or not. Although i think that maybe it can be released, but as something that does not have anything to do with underwater levels.

I'm gonna test your LaraS.chr NPC right now.

Edit:

SparedLife, i was testing the DXT5 in Lara.chr, but with some different skin. I noticed that despite the versatility of the gloss on LaraS.chr, When i try to gloss a certain part on whatever skin, only the Jungle shorts, the top, the backpack, and everything that's supposed to be over the "real skin" glosses. So i couldn't gloss her waist, arms or legs. Although whatever it's within the jungleshorts or the top, etc, can be glossed!

Another example of what DXT5 is all about...
http://img194.imageshack.us/img194/7400/dxttestu.jpg

My Bump maps does not work the way they should, they look as flat as a sheet of paper. Is it because i'm saving them as 2d textures? Should they be volumetric?

Oh, i also played with you long braid LaraS.chr, but when she turned around i was in front of Sabrina Sabrok. I'm gonna study your HEX posts and the instructions of your website to see what i can do, or maybe for more tutorials. Again, your discoveries shows the next stage on AOD modding.

PS: Why does the word long appears red? Oh, never mind.

You may be used to LaraS which has but one Normal map. The other models use 2 Normal maps, even though only one is necessary. You will need to look for a smaller Normal map. This map is an exact replica of the larger Normal map but shrunk to save space since the game doesn't use it. To gloss the face/arms/legs select the exact places on the smaller normal map where these parts are on the larger normal map. You can actually make a copy of the larger and rename to the smaller so they are exact, create your gloss and then shrink to correct size according to the dat file.

My Bump maps does not work the way they should, they look as flat as a sheet of paper. Is it because i'm saving them as 2d textures? Should they be volumetric?

I don't know what to tell you, 2D is what I use. Could it be in your game settings? Also there is a small gloss bar that is not part of the model but can be extracted by TexMod as part of the model. If you change this gloss bar you will not get any bump maps.

and oh I almost forgot, allow me to present NPC DXT5 Lara.chr

No accessories except glasses. Can be used as Kurtis or any NPC.

I haven't made the NPC DXT5 LaraD.chr yet but I have almost completed a DXT5 Kurtis.

Also I've updated my site and made a separate folder for TRAOD. If you could updated your posts where you link to my files it would be helpful. Such as post #1260 where you posted your Converse mod is a link to my loader that needs to be corrected. I've gone back to post #1180 and updated my links so I have no broken links to my site.

Posts updated!

Thank you very much for the NPC's DXT5 and for the DXT5 Kurtis! That actually means that we can next gen Kurtis as well, and i tried...

It's not very noticeable, but his Pierre's jacket shines as leather. I also made TR1 alike magnum pistol from google and TR1 textures.

http://img41.imageshack.us/img41/9177/kmagnum.jpg

I know the N is backwards, but it looks normal at the other angle.

Wow if wasn't for his long sleeves and his shirt, i could make a catsuit of him too... Oh, well, maybe we can blackout something.

Maybe i'll mod a little until i have to study for my aussagenlogik exam.

Another edit: Thanks for all the NPC DXT5! now we can make evil Laras, i just have to find out what character does what (there must be .CHR for the guards, the thugs, etc).

Yes there is, use Michiel's AODTextureEditor to rip the models from the game. He also has a GMXTool that will do this also.

I tried to get Janice next gen but there doesn't seem to be a way to turn on the gloss map from within the model. I saw a reference to a 3rd texture even though there are only two in the model. Adding a 3rd didn't work so I don't know what they were doing. I can get the transparencies and bumps working though.

you are right the gloss is not as pronounced as in the Lara models

Since Janice did not gloss I fired her and hired Kurtis to take over the corner business :)

At least we can make a spooky hooker ghost to fit into the monstrum story.

Trust me, i would not pay for that :vlol:.

At least he has not the same arsenal as Lara. I think the main problem with him is the way they did the mesh, he only can wear certain kind of clothing, if not we'll get short and wide and tight and long sleeves where they are not supposed to be... Oh, well that screenshot i took is nothing compared to the laughing moment your JaniceKurtis gave me.

I remember i saw short sleeves leather jackets back then on 2002 in some mall. In addition with long sleeves of some other clothing, they looked cool. Although i'm glad i did not buy them back then.

Edit: This is not a tutorial, but it's helpful for those who are willing to mod kurtis...

I been trying to figure out some of the other models configurations. Those with the proper textures and are already setup correctly are fairly easy to convert to DXT5 using the Lara models as templates. Some not so good though, Boaz has but one texture so there is no normal map and doesn't seem to support it in DXT5. I'm working on the cop with a shield right now and he's looking good

Good work on the jacket. Thanks for all your efforts, it's good to see someone so energetic in AOD.
I am messing with the shielded cop and there some strange stuff going on. There are three separate definitions on the same skin texture. The shield and helmet visor are defined together, the main clothes on another, the helmet on another. Yet all three call the same texture. It is as strange as Lara models having two normal maps that are identical. I'm guessing there was problems rendering the models properly and they tried to solve with individual UVs for various sections.
Whatever their problems it's definitely troublesome to get the masking correct for me.

I can say the same. I'm here cause there's a lot to do with every single DXT5 you release. This may be the first DXT5 Sunday of 2009. I think i'll release this to commemorate this day:

You do very good work my friend

The cop didn't work the way I needed but Arizona has all the qualities of a good model. Everything works; transparencies, bump, gloss. He also moves better than the cop, too bad the shield on the cop would have been good to mod.

I am glad I gave up on the cop and decided to look into Arizona. That model gave me the needed information for Boaz. I added the normal map and setup just like Arizona was setup and it works.

I think that saying that i'm amazed would be pointless since i have not recovered yet from my previous amaze state, but i am. Guys at the Verka thread will jump on their keyboards.

I found the Karel model and it looks good but the long coat passes through his behind. If I get the DXT5 working on him I will try changing his posture. I had to do this with LaraS with the long braid. I gave her Janice's posture so the braid had more room to drape. I think the log coat will make a good mod.

I looked at a few others I like. That big bald bodyguard, a cop with gas mask, Carvier, and a pirate looking guy. I'm sure there is more to find.

Playing as an NPC instead of Kurtis should not crash your computer but playing as an NPC instead of Lara will. Most all the models have basics animations, some a little more basic than others except the Lara models which include animations none of the other models have such as the ponytail and jigglies. If you use Lara as Kurtis then you will notice her ponytail does not animate properly this is because Kurtis does not have that animation call. You can use some characters for the dog like in the beginning of the game I substituted one of those sanitarium guys the dog and it worked and I have also substituted the dog for Kurtis and it worked. Yesterday I was even that cocoon and the sea monster looking things instead of Kurtis.

http://i698.photobucket.com/albums/vv348/sparedlife/SparedLifeScreens/creature.jpg
Also this guy but he's like the cops, he won't animated the arms correctly.

http://i698.photobucket.com/albums/vv348/sparedlife/SparedLifeScreens/zombie.jpg
I once had the Boaz monster working also.

I don't know how to stop the game from crashing when something else besides Lara is used. I have been able to get a hi-bred model to start as Lara but as soon as a movement is detected it crashes the game.

Karel is not what I'd hoped. There's a problem or two with his coat. For one it's straight and stiff, there's no fabric feel to it. When he bends the coat tail sticks out. Then there's this problem with the head which is the same problem with the model that metro guy had with his arm. This model had only the diffuse map, no normal map ( bump map or gloss map ) and after inserting one I see why.

http://i698.photobucket.com/albums/vv348/sparedlife/SparedLifeScreens/Karel.jpg

Of course this model was never intended to be used by me :)

I've only posted those that work in DXT5, Karel was not one of those.

While your out having fun I thought I'd post a little more DXT5 examples in hopes someone else will join you in modding this game.

Below the waist I darkened a pattern that was smoothed a little so the UV stretch would not be so obvious. I added Vertical lines to follow the texture stretch. The vertical lines were done in a bright blue to show how along with the gloss it gives the appearance of glowing. There are also vertical bumps the length of the legs but the Nvidia DDS tool does not like vertical lines so well, a good way past this is to rotate the texture first then bump so you get a horizontal bump and then rotate back.

The odd way the texture wrap on LaraS makes patterns hard to do. I doubt we will ever be able to unwrap the UV and re-wrap to a 1 to 1 ratio.

Yes I like the fur textures too and the camo textures and the leather textures and come to think of it there are a lot of patterns I like :D
That print will be good for this next post on DXT5
This is the same pattern on LaraC1 but in the first pic the texture is both Gloss mapped and bump mapped with a bright light shading for a more metallic look.
http://i698.photobucket.com/albums/vv348/sparedlife/SparedLifeScreens/Leo01.jpg
The I took out the bump map and the lighting leaving only the gloss for a patent leopard leather look
http://i698.photobucket.com/albums/vv348/sparedlife/SparedLifeScreens/Leo02.jpg
Next I took away the gloss also making it closer to a leopard print shirt. Again changing the lighting
http://i698.photobucket.com/albums/vv348/sparedlife/SparedLifeScreens/Leo03.jpg
Lastly I changed the lighting again and added a texture in a separate channel to give the shirt more of a fabric texture than just a print
http://i698.photobucket.com/albums/vv348/sparedlife/SparedLifeScreens/Leo04.jpg

There is much that can be done with this. You could make leather outline around the leopard texture, add pockets, emblems, or even a collar with a tie.

Your work with the glowing had gave me several ideas! Have you tested it under water? Maybe the catsuit can hide those issues while underwater and still be cool after all (a nice blue glowing logo would be neat).

I was thinking about making a Larson mod from Arizona, since he has a moddable vest (i was ok with the cap), but his mesh has that beard, so i've got mad at him and took revenge :

http://img41.imageshack.us/img41/348/wrongk.jpg

Now, any .chr that resists modding will be Britneysized :mis:

Boaz is rude as well, but it looks the same w or w/o Britney's face.

Now, that glowing is suggesting me something that has to do with Arizona right now.... Maybe i can forgive him.

How can I choose what outfits to wear where I want using TRAOD SCU???

The SCU does not have the capability to load skins. Choosing the level, the model, and the skin can be done but you will have to do them in steps. The steps depend on if you are using TexMod or my loader.
Both will assume you will be using my DXT5 models

TexMod:
Rename the lara model you wish to use to the default Lara model for the level you want to play. Example to use LaraS.CHR in Parisian Backstreets rename to LaraD.chr and place in the DATA/CHAR folder.
Start the game with the SCU and select the level to load.
Save the game and exit.
Start TexMod, select the TRAOD exe, and select the package, then launch
Load the saved game.
If you did correctly then LaraS in example will show with the tpf packaged skin.

Loader:
Use the loader to mount the skin or use a model with the skin loaded already
Rename the Lara model to the default models name for the level you want to play.
Place the model in the DATA/CHAR folder
Start the SCU and select the level
If all goes well the level should start with the Lara model of your choice with the custom skin.

Summary to question you need 3 different techniques to do what you ask, you can't do it all with the SCU.

SCU to select level
Rename Lara model you want to use and place in the Data/char folder
TexMod/Loader to load outfit.

Thanks, SparedLife. I may mod when i return from my classes, the leopard top will be fun to wear and for learning how the patterns wrap on that .chr.

And, as i'm a graphical person -that's why i suffer with philosophy, just plain white with black letters on it (just kidding)- i will follow your steps to make some graphical explanation.

USING THE LOADER TO LOAD ANY MODEL AT ANY LOCATION
First of all, AOD allows you to play with 2 characters: Kurtis & Lara. For Lara, the game uses 5 different models (Lara.chr, LaraS.CHR, LaraC1, LaraC2 & LaraD.chr); for Kurtis, one (Kurtis.chr). To play with a different character, (Janice i.e.), you'll need to rename Janice.chr into Kurtis.chr. You can also rename Lara's .chr files in order to use outfits that doesn't belong to a certain level. Here is a compilation i made from SparedLife's DXT5 models of Lara that comes along with the loader and some other useful files i'll explain below.

First, you'll need to locate the char folder and place the Loader & Default.jpg in there along with the .chr files
http://img36.imageshack.us/img36/6968/z01e.jpghttp://img30.imageshack.us/img30/9211/z02b.jpg

Then, place the .dds skins you want to load on that folder. For this guide, i downloaded the leopard top above this post. Open the Loader (once) and Click on To CHR button, so the .dds files can be recognized; after that, just click GO. You must load both .dds files (one after the other one ceases to load) in order to get the best of them, because one .dds contains the textures palette and the other contains the bump map. Also, both of them has the alpha channel activated.
http://img36.imageshack.us/img36/716/z03.jpg

Then, enjoy!

http://img29.imageshack.us/img29/5908/larac1chr299980leo.jpg

Warning:
*Once you load the .dds, the .CHR will remain modded, unless you have stored the original .dds files, it wont require, like TexMod, to be loaded several times to play it.
*works fine with SCU, since you can select the level of where the .chr you loaded is used, i.e. Louvre Storm Drains ===> LaraC2.chr

ABOUT THE COMPILATION.RAR

The .rar file i posted above includes the following files:
http://img29.imageshack.us/img29/7843/z04.jpg

The CHR files:
This files are the models the game uses to play.

The ORIGINAL DDS files:
This are the skins that are extracted when used the TO DDS function. Here are included 2 kind of .dds per model, i.e:
*LaraC1.chr 1698136.Original(bump).dds
*LaraC1.chr 299980.Original(model).dds
When extracted, they are normally called LaraC1.chr 1698136.dds and LaraC1.chr 299980.dds, but i added the ".Original(n)" between the "LaraC1.chr xxxxxx" and the ".dds", so it's easy to distinguish them. you have to take in count that between the name of the model and the numbers are two spaces.

The JPG files:
One of them must be placed along with the Loader: the Default.jpg. the other ones are optional, they are a set of 345 x 529 screenshots that works automatically as a display when you select a certain dds file, i.e:
*Lara.chr 1841056.Original(bump).dds has Lara.chr 1841056.Original(bump).jpg
*Lara.chr 442900.Original(model).dds has Lara.chr 442900.Original(model).jpg
An so it goes...
http://img42.imageshack.us/img42/1934/z05b.jpg

The DAT FILES
The contain information about guns, bump and normal textures. It's useful when you try to mod the .dds, to know more about it, go to the Step 5 on post#36 (http://www.tombraiderforums.com/showpost.php?p=3652360&postcount=36) on the Modding Tips, Tricks and Tutorials (http://www.tombraiderforums.com/showthread.php?t=122615&page=4) thread.

PS: SparedLife, i haven't posted any .rar yet cause it's your tool, so i need your permission. Or maybe i can send it to you and you can post it on your site. (?)

The reason i made the .rar it's because the DXT5 from your site had the DXT5 alpha channel tested, so Lara's backpack is not solid, etc. I haven't uploaded it, and i wont if you mind. Once i read your reply, i'll post the link, or delete the ABOUT entry.

You are quite welcome to modify models textures and offer them. I left the DXT5 models as I did to serve as examples of what can be done. Restoring to original is quite simple. Just rip the original textures, open in a graphic edit, rip the DXT5 textures and open them along with the originals. Copy the originals (RGB and alpha channels) and paste on the DXT5 textures, save, and mount the skin to the DXT5 models with the loader.

I'm gonna upload it and send it to you through PM so you can check out, or maybe make a Readme about it. i think that with those 2 tutorials is enough for people to surpass the basics of AOD modding. I'll make one about DXT5 capabilities soon.

I looked at the file you sent and I don't see a problem as long as the Loader and the CHR files are not altered, except for editing the DDS textures. I don't say that because I don't want you tampering I say it because if you alter the models you will defeat the TexMod readiness for tpf distribution across the communities. Re-skinning them is fine and should not cause a problem.

Everything you have done has been with respect and honor, I trust you my friend. Continue your plans with my complete approval.

I looked at the file you sent and I don't see a problem as long as the Loader and the CHR files are not altered, except for editing the DDS textures.

That's exacly what i did: restored the .dds to it's previous state, but preserving the alpha, so you can mod, but also unmod (without having to delete the .chr). The tool and the .chr files are untouched.

I don't say that because I don't want you tampering I say it because if you alter the models you will defeat the TexMod readiness for tpf distribution across the communities. Re-skinning them is fine and should not cause a problem.

Well, even if i tamper, you can let me know, cause i think it's your right to do so. But i did totally forgot about TexMod, I'll post an explanation of the TexMod methods over AoD on the edit of this post.

Everything you have done has been with respect and honor, I trust you my friend. Continue your plans with my complete approval.

I can say the same, your work has lead me to too much.

Edit:
I found really weird things. First one was that when i unmod the way i wanted i couldn't, after looking towards what it could be i found that the modded Lara(n) xxxxx.dds was 1,366 KB, while original Lara(n) xxxxx.dds was 1,025 KB. So i reopen all the 1,025 KB textures and save them again with Photoshop. This time, all of them were 1,366 KB, and the unmodding was successful.

TexMod Tips

First,
Go to the char folder and rename the .chr that is used in that level (LaraC1.chr i.e.) to the name of the model that is used in the level you want to play (i.e. LaraD.chr, wich is played at Parisian Backstreets).
http://img198.imageshack.us/img198/5199/x03z.jpg

Go to the level you want to play with SCU save the game and exit AOD.
http://img29.imageshack.us/img29/8839/x01k.jpg

Then, open and rip the textures with Texmod.
http://img29.imageshack.us/img29/4341/x02j.jpg

Mod them, save with the exact name and make your .tpf file.
http://img20.imageshack.us/img20/1795/x04a.jpg

Then Run the .tpf with TexMod.

The loader rips the raw image without mips, you don't need the mips for editing. When you save your edited file you save with mips that is why there is a size difference.

Mokono

Oh, i'm a little confused and sad at the same time, i thought i had to set the mips that the .dat said. Does that means i have to resave all the .dds again to make them infallible?

You are correct you set the mips to the dat file, actually I set mine one less than the dat file says because of the way the game loads the graphics.

I was just pointing out why the files are 1025 when ripped but 1366 when saved. 1366 when saved is correct.

Mokono

Thanks for answering, friend, they are all resaved now (1366 KB), so both loading and unloading can work without issues.

I'm making a little mod before sleep, i hope i can finnish it quickly.

PS: It's a DXT5 (surprise, i guess)

Edit:
here is it, i called it blendermod cause textures & wrapping techniques comes from different modders.
-Anniversary textures by TRTJA.
-Cleavage pattern (for wrapping purposes) by Zac.
-TRTJA's Boots texture wrap fix by me (using my Converse wrap as a reference).
-Underworld skin template made by SailorTaurus.
-And last, but also important, DXT5 capabilities made by SparedLife

And this is the result:
http://img193.imageshack.us/img193/9539/blendermod1.jpg
A bit odd, but i hope you like it. The latex effect is still under test.

PS: I don't know if it's too much to ask (considering that i've been so inactive this week), but i really would like to know if you can make the braid longer for Lara.chr, i was just wondering...

Edit2:
Well a second try i gave (since i didn't save the .psd i was working on yesterday), i just can't make those "·$%&@/! lines on the clavage to get straight.

When doing the skins with the loader VS TexMod there are a couple things you need to keep in mind.

There is a small 32x128 texture used for lighting and shading effects which is loaded by the game from outside the model textures. This lighting texture can be manipulated but is only usable from TexMod. Since it isn't part of the model the loader cannot access this texture.

Whenever you use the loader to skin a model it is no longer usable as a TexMod model for tpf distribution. I have the default DXT5 models with tutorial skins already on the models posted on my website, use these to mod with TexMod so other will know exactly what model to use with TexMod in order to run your outfit.

As anyone who has attempted to mod AOD with TexMod knows getting the tpf files to work from one person to the next is very frustrating. It was determined that if anything changed on the model the offset in TexMod would change and couldn't be found by the tpf. That meant everyone had to use the exact same Lara model file. That is why I have a set of models posted on my website with tutorial skins on the models. The tutorial skins instead of default were selected because of the DXT5 (next gen) models so the skinners can see how bump, gloss, and transparencies work.

This is not to say you cannot use Mokono's DXT5 models with TexMod but just keep in mind if you create a skin with TexMod in conjunction with his skin created with the loader then the offsets in the tpf will not match those on the models on my website. Basically know one else will see your mod unless you offer the CHR along with the tpf. This includes the DXT5 models he has mounted the original skins on, he made these for use with the loader not TexMod.

For example my DXT5 Lara models posted on my site with the tutorial skins have an offset of B5E7B5A3 for the diffuse map.
However my DXT5 Lara models using the original skin textures have an offset of 6D76E496
So from the above example you can see tpf files from each do not match and will not work with each other.
If you want to use Mokono's textures in TexMod this is how to do it properly...
Download the DXT5 model the mod is based on from my site.
Run TexMod and log the textures.
Convert Mokono's DDS textures to TGA 32bit and rename to the TexMod logged texture names replacing the ones TexMod ripped.
create the tpf package
load the package with TexMod.
Do NOT distribute Mokono's mods as your own, if someone else wants his mod be sure to give Mokono proper credit.

The loader and TexMod are 2 completely different ways to skin TRAOD, they are not meant to be used together but can be. Both can use the DXT5 models and both can be used as a vessel to distribute model outfits but you cannot mix the two when distributing your skins. It's either a loader mod or a TexMod mod or you need to distribute the chr along with your mod.

The loader skins do not require you to use TexMod and you cannot load a loader skin with TexMod (it's not a tpf).

WHOW!!Thants very hard to do! I though it would be easierBut maybe for TRAOD if worth a sh
No it is not that difficult. Try doing it one step at a time.
Plan out your project and break it down into tasks that you have time to complete.
First task:
1. Are you planning to use TexMod or the Loader?
2. Do you have a program that can edit and save in either 32bit TGA or DDS?
3. choose your model

Second Task:
1. create a folder to use for you editing
2. copy/download the CHR to this folder
3. copy or save your custom texture to this folder if you already have one.

More when your ready.

PS: I don't know if it's too much to ask (considering that i've been so inactive this week), but i really would like to know if you can make the braid longer for Lara.chr, i was just wondering...

I already have 8 lara.chr files with a long ponytail. I thought I had posted one of them. Well anyway I have 4 for TexMod and 4 with original skins. 2 NPC (regular and extra large) and 2 normal models. I'll get them to you as soon as I resolve my server issue.

I know long winded but I've had some questions regarding TexMod tpf distribution.

Edit
Oops one more question I forgot to answer.
If you want to create hi-res textures for the walls to use as a backdrop for your Loader outfit mods do this.
1. Start TexMod and log the wall/prop/prefab textures you want to convert to hi-res.
2. Edit them and save
3. Move/copy your CHR with the custom skin mounted with my loader to the CHAR folder
4. Start TexMod and create your package containing the edited textures
5. load the package and start the game.

You will see your hi-res textures through TexMod and your custom skin on the model for a really nice screenshot.

Wow, SparedLife, very enlightening explanation :tmb:. I'm glad it's on the top of this page. That may explain a few issues i had back then when trying to mix the loader along with texmod, i always concieved them as separate experiences. It also clears some diffuse steps i wrote on my previous posts.

The only complain i have is when you say that those are my DXT5 models. They are yours, i downloaded them from your page, i just reverted their .dds to their original state. They are also not "my mods", since every work i do is based on someone else's to save some time (that i need most); even the catsuit has TRJTA's Uprgraded skin.

Edit:
I also didn't want to start a TexMod vs Loader fight, i'm sorry, just wanted the Loader to have some recognition on this forum.

Well here's another try at Larson:

Looking good, keep posting I like your screenshots.
I didn't mean to give you the impression you started a Loader VS. TexMod fight. I myself prefer the loader, it's less of a hassle to distribute the skins, easier to use, and better to organize the skins. I know it's weird that I promote TexMod so hard when I'm the one who wrote the Loader. I am however glad people have a choice in what vehicle to use in modding AOD and want to give them full oppurtunity to use either or both.
I can't figure out why changing the DDS skin effects the offset. I took the Lara.chr with the tutorial skin and inserted the original exactly like the tutorial was inserted and that's all it took to screw up the offset so TexMod wouln't load properly. There is no difference in size, mips, channels, skin place in model. I can edit the skin with the loader a half dozen times and get different offsets in TexMod.
I misplaced the crank for the server and I'm out of coal. Just as soon as I get the gears spinning I'll post the Lara.chr with long ponytail.

Maybe has nothing to do with the size, mips, or channels. I tcould be the textures itself, or the colors, i don't know, i know barely about it.

SparedLife

I have ripped both models but haven't turned them into DXT5 yet. Still trying to work out kinks with adding channels.

Just a little more on DXT5 usage

There's more to bump maps than just bumps. First off how bump maps work is sort of like a 3D movie. If you notice on the TRAOD models the bump maps are blue/red and there is a small lighting texture I've mentioned before that acts as the 3D glasses. If you've ever created the bump map wrong you know how terrible the model looks but if you control the colors on the bump map along with the gloss you can use them to create some excellent glow effects by changing the bump map colors.

Below I've created a flat gray shirt on Lara with a glowing emblem. The gloss map is a medium blend gray, The bump map has the exact colors as the emblem on the skin map although you can change them for other effects. Red on Red with high gloss will give you an excellent fire glow.

http://i698.photobucket.com/albums/vv348/sparedlife/tomb%20raider/BumpGlowE.jpg

I also added the normal bump under the emblem of the emblem but 6 pixels larger so the emblem would be raised off the shirt.

You never stop amazing me. That shirt makes me feel bad for having made nothing new... Remember that failed Pierre DuPont mod i wanted to do for Kurtis? I still have the gun with the red rectangle... I'm wondering how it would look with your glowing technique.

SparedLife

Yes: the skin map needs to be bright red, the bump map needs to be bright red, and the gloss map needs to be more white than gray.

I just looked at Kurtis and there is a bump map for the guns. I may need to DXT5 this texture and repost the model.

It has no alpha channel so you will need to create one. Also be sure to save in accordance to the dat file.

looks like it worked to me. In some games the glow map is a separate texture altogether. I've also seen rgb channels used as different kinds of glow maps. In reality there is no combination limit to do environments. Most games do not come close to utilizing all the features available.

does it glow well in the game? White out the gloss map and see. I still may have to DXT5 those 2 textures.

Mokono

That's what I was afraid would happen. The pager looks better because it is part of the DXT5 skin texture for Arizona. I will need to modify the kurtis model and include the gun textures in DXT5. It pretty much explains what happened. But i really thought it glowed, maybe was the bright red feature.

Here's another TRC Larson. Judging by Arizona's predisposition to wrap well TRA textures, i think he may be a better TRA Larson, rather than a TRC Larson. I made Kurtis face looks less post mortem.

Your a quick learner. Yes the glow depends on the lighting for the area you are in. Also I noticed sometimes when you reload; the game no longer loads the lighting effects and the glow disappears.
I find there is much more use for the glow than for the transparencies. Between the glow effect and the gloss effects you can come up with some interesting combinations.

For the screenshots, i reloaded certain points at Le Serpent Rouge, since that level has a lot of light variation; however, glowing was never absent, unless Lara is were light is more intense (like if glossing masked glowing).

With more use you mean the use of glow at the game or the modding possibilities?

While glossing LaraS.chr, i also noticed that almost every single glossing i tried to make in her torso before showed the circles while underwater. But it didn't happened with the glowing.

Modding possibilties. There isn't a lot you can do with transparencies, mostly just make things disappear like the backpack. There's not a lot of places on the model to use see through textures, for instance the jacket tail on LaraD.
The glow effects however can be used on any part of the model and so can the gloss effects. I made Lara's eyes glassy with the gloss map and then glow red with the bump map, looked pretty freaky.
With the glow effects you could make the model like a Tron character. You could also gloss an arm or leg like metal and put in glowing LED lights for a bionic limb.
I like what you've done with the glow effects already, she really looks like a disco party girl :). Reminds me of those people at night concerts that walk around with the glow sticks and glow necklaces.

I don't know what I'm going to do for a server now. I think this last crash took everything out for keeps :(

Also if your releasing the entire model package then there is no reason to worry about TexMod, since they can just put the entire model in the CHAR folder

I see... I could see some nice mods while trying to test the glow, like ripping the textures from those plants at the Bio-facility and use the to make clothing with glowing drops. The cyborg would be awesome (half classic Lara and half robot), with sparks and leds all over the exposed parts. Now i know how i can glow the yellow eyes of my Doppelgänger. Oh, and for the concept of the rave girl i used my own experience, cause one of my friends took off her high heels to dance more comfortable without any shoes. I lol'd, you know :D.

About your server cracks... Have you tried Windows Live SkyDrive or Google Spaces? I was thinking about holding evry mod i've made so far in one of those free services, so i can modify the download links without uploading massively every day (since i can't afford a server).

TexMods' real advantage in TRAOD is the scenery textures. It allows you to make very detailed HiRes textures for your surroundings. Use the loader to mount a model skin and then TexMod to load the model and the HiRes textures.

I just noticed Mokono that you are using version 52. I'm surprised any of this works with that version. I remember having so much trouble with 52 years ago that I went back to 49 and have stayed there since.

http://i698.photobucket.com/albums/vv348/sparedlife/tomb%20raider/TRAODGlow01.jpg

There are lighting textures that are only accessible through TexMod.
This one I have mentioned a few times before directly effects the bump and gloss maps on the model. Without it there are no bumps.

You can see the difference in gloss and glow with and without this texture:

The walls that you see glowing red are because I changed the standard dim lighting to bright red with these lighting textures:

You can change the lighting, bump, and sometimes gloss on the scenery textures to get different effects.

Very cool effects! But i don't understand well; i mean, what's a standard dim lighting? Are these separate textures from the normal and the bump map? To glow a wall i need another texture set that's not the bump and the normal?

standard dim lighting - The game mood is dark so the lighting in the game reflects this. Rather than a bright sunshine glow across the level it is more shadow and dim lighting.

Normal map - contains two maps the Bump map and the Gloss map. What makes the glow mapping work is how the games lighting textures effect gloss and bump. There are many lighting textures throughout the game as in the two examples above. These textures can be extracted with TexMod, modified, and reinserted with TexMod. How you modify these textures determines the effect on the normal map.
You can glow only those textures that utilize the normal map fully. I noticed many of the wall textures do not use the gloss map even though they use the bump map. This is the same problem I had with the Kurtis model not glowing because the game doesn't access the gloss map like the Lara models.
In the example above that hallway has a floor that is very shiny which shows that it uses the gloss map but the walls are flat no gloss. If you look at the alpha channel of the wall texture it is pure white which should be high gloss but the game ignores the alpha (gloss map) channel. I can turn the wall bright red but like Kurtis's gun it's just bright red unlike the floor which can be made to glow depending on how those lighting textures are used.

PS: I obviously used the loader to make the .chr needed for that Lara.

Those are nice color patterns,
Since your using TexMod for the exterior lighting you can change the size of the texture to any size you want in order to get a higher resolution, for instance that top one is 128X128 but you can increase it to 512X512 and put in some very detailed lines.

I've read in your page that 1024 x 1024 textures set can be enhanced to 2048 x 2048, and that it will work with DXT5. But it won't work with the Loader if i save the texture ser of the .dds to 2048. I would like to enhance my converse textures, since the fiber i used is very detailed in higher resolutions.

Edit:
I made a little change with the outfit i was previously working:

I would have to create a new model with DXT5 capacity and textures at 2048. Not a problem I'm sure but getting it to you might be. Which model?

I have some screenshots for you to look at, just a little entertainment. I used multiple tools for these shots.
Loader - for Jurassic Lara
GMXTool to extract map data
HEX Editor to read map data
TexMod to load textures
Cheat Engine to change map data.
Photoshop to edit the textures
Fraps to capture the screenshots

Whew....

They are in this album

There are several with captures to flips while manipulating the camera. I like that little room and the camera is so much fun to play with. I tested the glow on the entire room.

This one is my favorite.

Possibly a darker shadow in some areas.

Yes, it is your nice and handy .psd template, i didn't mention it, cause this mod had been in development for at least 2 weeks. The original post was...

The Loader doesn,t work by me? Because i have Windows Vista :S

Mmm, first i must know the conditions of the failure:
*Is the loader in the propper folder (by default, it usually is C:\Program Files\Eidos Interactive\TRAOD\Data\char)?
*Are Default.jpg, SLTRAODLoader.exe & the .chr file in the same folder (char)?
*Was the .dds skin you were trying to use downloaded from this forum?
* Did any kind of error message box pop up?

Also, check the Modding Tips, Tricks and Tutorials Thread (http://www.tombraiderforums.com/showthread.php?p=3652360#post3652360) for further info.

OMG, i didn't notice. Are you sure? The LaraS.chr NPC DXT5 had eyes on her.

About the glasses, i opened your leopard so i could figure out where the heck were the textures for the glasses. It's a single line! I most recently added gloss, bump, and translucense.

That's why my downloads for the DXT5 models were loaded with tutorial skins instead of the default. The glasses texture was on the tutorial skin.
The only problem I've seen so far with the NPC models is the Lara.chr. I don't know which chunk of the mesh belongs to the eyes so it may take a while to locate. There are about 2 dozen sections of the mesh which not only include everything you see when using a Lara model as Kurtis but also the eyes, LaraD's denim jacket bottom (the part that moves), and various other attachments.
The main body is all one mesh except for the face which is also an attachment. I keep thinking if this ever gets to a modeling program we could do some damage :p
The UV coordinates for the skin textures are located just after each mesh but it's difficult to interpret with a hex editor. I'm thinking of writing a program to disassemble the hex code but that may be a little over my abilities.

SparedLife

Is it possible to attach glasses to a model, then release it as a .chr?

The glasses are already attached to the models. That is not the problem. The in game play does not access the glasses at any time in fact the game actually deactivates the glasses in several levels. This is done because they are activated in the cutscenes and need to be deactivated when the following level loads.
So the only way to play with the glasses is to activate them which is something the game play does not do. I with the permission of Eidos modified the games EXE to activate the glasses instead of one of the guns so we could play with the glasses. If you do not start the game with the modified EXE you will not be able to play with the glasses unless someone saves the game while using the glasses and passes that saved game to you. I had several saved games posted for each level but the links are not valid at this time.
Bottom line is it doesn't matter if Mokono has the glasses activated on the Lara he packages you will not see them unless you run the modified EXE or he saves the game while he has the glasses activated and gives you the saved game.

I've tested it, and it looks Great! However, I do have a suggestion. What bugs me is the neckline cleavage looks abit plain. May you kindly outline the top with black. Anyways, everything else is great, thanks.

Oh, and for Spared Life, does the hacked .exe work on a full install version? Where you do not need the disk inserted. Each time I run it, it says insert Disk 1. My TR:AOD is legal btw.

EDIT: I played again and I noticed something, this could be because of my game, but I don't know. I was using the SCU and the fly (she swims actually) mode, and the lab save game. When I flew (swam) her above the pool in the lab (ABOVE the pool, not into the pool, above so you can see abit of reflection), I noticed her reflection was stuffed up. I'm not sure, but check for yourself. So just fly (swim) to the pool in the 'lab' save game, go into the pool whilst in fly mode (enable God Mode aswell) the rise up, so you're still flying, but your legs are underwater, and you'll see the demented reflection.

Sorry if you don't understand this, I'm in a hurry and I really don't know how to explain this. I might upload a screenshot, it doesn't mean I will. Anyway thanks, P_C.

Yes it works on the Full install but to use the hacked EXE you must UnCLZ all your CLZ files. It only takes a minute to do this but you will have to download Michiel's tools (AODTextureEditor) which includes the UnCLZ.exe. You just have to put the UnCLZ.exe and supporting DLL files into your folders with the CLZ files; which are - Maps, cutscenes, and Audio. Then in succession drag and drop each CLZ onto the UNCLZ.exe until all are unarchived.
Took a while to figure out why the hacked EXE worked for me but everyone else got errors. I had UnCLZed all my files long time before hacking the EXE so I had no idea this needed to be done. It was a good thing I did however because I would have got the same error and probably gave up on the glasses.

Remember to place the .chr in the Char folder and the savegames in the SaveGame folder. Use the V49 of the executable :).

I dont seem to have a Char folder. Where should it be located?

Oh, and for Spared Life, does the hacked .exe work on a full install version? Where you do not need the disk inserted. Each time I run it, it says insert Disk 1. My TR:AOD is legal btw.

I now, i have legal version too, and it asks you the disk unless you go to the Map folder and Cutscene folder, turn the .GMX.CLZ files into just .GMX with a DoS program that works when you drag the file you want to un-.clz over it.

I think i spotted the same error as the Bio-Lab facility, but since it has nothing to do with the main map, i haven't fixed it, but maybe is because of one of the options i choose while saving with the nvidia pluging.

Ok, i'll work on it xD. And, about requests, sure... Why not; i mean, it's hard to make something extraordinary like TRU mods in AOD, but maybe with a little practice something nice can be done. The cleavage rebel pixels are an example of how undocile are AOD textures sometimes.

I just figured out an easier and quicker way to turn the Lara models into NPC models. A little late but I just did laraC1 in about 5 minutes VS the others over an hour.

I've been trying to figure out the attachment values and what each attachment's header does. There's a byte for assigning textures, I tried it on the glasses and assigned them to one of the guns textures. Not a big deal now but one of the Lara models (maybe LaraD) takes the texture from the glove which when transparent causes a hole in the hand the size of the glasses texture. If I had found that info earlier I would have moved the glasses texture off the model for my DXT5 model.

I was able to turn one eye up to pure white while the other was normal. Looked spooky.

Yes,
I saw one look at a skin someone posted and was hooked. I made about 100 skins for the default outfit, probably the first 30 were just hue variants before actually changing the texture pattern.
NOLF was actually the first taste of DDS I got, they called their textures DTX instead of DXT. I actually used NOLF to create my first skins for TRAOD using NOLF DTX tools.

Have you considered the other factors besides conversion to DDS. These are next gen models so the alpha channels are in effect plus you need a bump map with that. I could convert it and test in a LaraS model with no gloss and create a bump then email you the parts but if anything needs changing your on your own. Hey good luck but there is a couple things you need to know before the attempt.

Despite the very good intentions (Thank you again), the DDS posted by LaraRules81 won't work right out of the box.
1. There's a name game problem; the texture needs the same name my loader ripped the original with.
2. It's a DXT1 and you need to be at DXT5
3. It has no mips and you need 10
4. it has no alpha channel
5. You have no bump map.

I think that covers it :D

They may, but we can't tell since this thread is not very popular... Is up to us (you included) making it popular ;).

You're in the same situation i was 20 posts back, when i posted my first mod. Just don't let it get to you.

Sure they can! First mods ever posted were made with TexMod. The Loader is a tool to make organized .chr by .dds extracting and easy management of DXT5 features.

Edit:

Here's a Dialogue that explains how to make a mod with PaintShop Pro...

I use Paint Shop Pro, not Photoshop :p

Oh, so I have to place the transparent layer like this
http://aycu32.webshots.com/image/38471/2006393457624032583_rs.jpg

Then save it as TGA.

I select the file, and put it to DDS
http://img269.imageshack.us/img269/3608/00000000000000000g.jpg

What options do I tick / untick ?
http://aycu09.webshots.com/image/38848/2002886553361034675_rs.jpg

The backpck has to be invisible, so I see her back. To do this I need to place a new invisble layer ( the type like shown on top ) on top of the backpack and do the above process ?

^^ Looks pretty good, but on the options panel in DDS Converter 2 check the buttons for [DXT1a] compression, and [Save alpha (if any)].

I don't know about working with transparent layers like that. GIMP lets you cut out the backpack and leave a hole in the texture. It really does have an added layer, but it seems simpler to work on it the way they have it in GIMP.

I noticed on your DDS settings you have the DXT3 format ticked. The skins are by default DXT1 with 9 mips. This needs to be followed exactly unless your using one of my DXT3 models. There is also in your settings a box that says "save alpha (if any)", this also needs to be ticked.
The alpha channel is not a layer, it's an additional RGB channel. If you are editing in TGA format you should save as 32bit with alpha.
Which Lara model are you using? Default (except alpha enabled), Sukkel or DXT3 HiRes? We can upload you a 1024x1024 TGA with the backpack alpha channeled out if you need it. I looked at mine and it's 4mb for the default Lara.CHR
You can see below the alpha is added on after the RGB channels

http://www.spared-life.com/TombRaiderImages/AlphaBackpack.jpg

I downloaded it from your POST (http://www.tombraiderforums.com/showpost.php?p=1958482&postcount=169).
The AlphaLara.zip
I used your tool to extract the DDS files, converted them, opened them in PSP and startzed editing. I don't know how to make an Alpha Channel in PSP, how do you make one in Photoshop ( as far as I can see it's Photoshop you're using ...)

Could you send me your file and see what it tells me ? maybe i can get more information on how to do it myself from that file :)

Okay, thanks :)

Here's a link to an alpha tutorial for Paint Shop Pro. I believe I have that program but where I put it?

http://www.sluniverse.com/kb/article.aspx?id=10190

Here's the 1024x1024 32bit tga with an alpha and the backpack masked out.

http://www.spared-life.com/TombRaiderImages/Lara.chr.7z

Thanks, i'll try the tutorial first :D

Edit : SparedLife ; You got PM
( additional to the Pm :
I used to converter to put it to 9, but when I have a look at it on your tool it doesn't show  )

And an other question, how do I put the CHR back in-game ?

I installed Paint Shop Pro XI to try the alpha channel. Although I only looked at it for a couple minutes the program is actually very nice for the money.
There are a couple things I didn't like about the alpha channel selection. You have to create a layer mask first and then convert the layer mask to a channel and in doing this the part with the mask is destroyed. I'm sure there's a way around this if I took time to look. I saved my edited pic as a TGA and a PSD and then opened both in Photoshop. Photoshop sees the alpha in both so there's no problem there. The other thing I didn't like is I couldn't find a tool palette to view the channels, the only reference I found in the menu that I even knew I had an alpha channel is a command to remove alpha channel.

If you look to the left you'll see a button "Palets" or so, press that, then a thing will open and press "Layers" now you should be able to see all of the layers.

Btw, how do I put a CHR back in-game ?

When I installed my AOD there was no DATA/CHAR folder but after installing the 49 upgrade it was there.

You can put any model (dog, Kurtis, Janice, Lara) in here and you can rename any Lara model to LaraD in order to see that model at the start.

If you want a front view camera for the screenshot then download some of the front view saved games.

If you want a close up then download the camera tool. I have a Paris1.GMX with every special camera zoomed. Special cameras are the ones that change your default view like at the start, the room, and cutaway shots.

Yay ! It works ! It's gone :jmp:

Thanks both of you :D

I downloaded them to look at superimposing the two and realized I'm not at my system so I have no way to look at this now. When I get back to my system with Photoshop I will look into it.
From what I can tell just by comparing the two the skin texture just needs to be morphed to fit at the senses (ears, eyes, nose, mouth). Cut the pieces for these areas and put them where they go from there you should be able to match the pieces together with similar fill. Also you could just change Lara's face color and texture to match the other face and then layer just the designs onto Lara's face.

Mokono
22-06-09, 02:39
I didn't try the color match, but i did cut the fundamental parts (mouth, ears, etc.), but since the face of the nephilim has too many lines drawn, it was almost impossible to make them fit... I also tried with one single half, but it didn't work.

As for the collar, well i think i'm gonna black out the collar and drawn one like the one i did for LaraC2.chr. Do you know the exact place for the collar in the texture?

SparedLife
22-06-09, 03:06
I pulled the pieces apart with paint (ears, forehead) and then stretched the forehead tat to fit Lara's elongated forehead. Remove the eyes and align the tats under the eyes to Laras' and color Lara's eyebrows white. You can also free transform the brows at a little more angle. I didn't get to the mouth but I think it will work.
I think you can cut each tat out and smooth the edges then place on Lara where they go. The wrinkles can be done with a brush. << Time consuming though. The first paragraph may be faster.
It would be great to have that template for other mods too. If the texture stretch works out then the template would be good for variations of scars and tats.

And that's what i did... Me and my reckless go for the hard path :vlol:.

Here (the left half), although i haven't smooth it yet.

Edit:

I did a quick wraping on her face, nothing definitive, since it's not smoothed yet.

http://img520.imageshack.us/img520/5461/laranef.jpg

PS: I think i'm gonna black out the collar to paint a new one, but i can't find it in the texture set. May look better if i draw a new one like the one in the LaraC2 model.

Also, her brown eyelashes wont turn white no matter what, so i may black out them as well.

SparedLife

What makes Lara models unique?

Take for instance you cannot load a saved game that was saved with LaraS.chr with any other character.
You can however load a saved game that was saved with Lara while using LaraC1 and vice versa
You can also load a game saved with LaraD while using LaraC2 and vice versa.

So why can't you load a game saved with Lara while playing LaraS?

Possibly the saved game saves data from the models which cannot be accessed by a model that crashes the game.

The reason I bring this up is because I've spent the better part of the day tring to resolve the saved game load issue.

I have a bunch of Lara.chr saved games all ready loaded so I used Lara.chr as my test dummy. As you can see from the above pictures I can swap meshes but they don't work right. Each of those above are Lara.chr

I did the same with LaraS as with Carvier and Boaz with better results since the models are so similar. If I take the entire mesh from LaraS and replace Lara.chr's mesh with it I get the LaraS.chr and it won't load a Lara.chr saved game. However if I just replace the body mesh and not any of the attachments it will load a Lara.chr saved game. I did have to replace several pieces of Lara.chr with LaraS.chr pieces like the glasses, face, eyes, hair pieces which the model considers attachments but I can load Lara.chr saved games with the LaraS.chr model.

I have a LaraS Lara.chr :)

So i'm thinking my theory is there is something in the attachments that does not allow all the Lara models to load any models saved games. Possibly something unique to that model and is included in the saved game data.

I can do the same with LaraC2 and LaraD and have all the models being able to load any Lara.chr saved game but C2 and D have that lower jacket attachment that I can't get on Lara. I can and have created the said models in Lara.chr but without the lower jacket and they work.

As it goes so far all the NPC mesh has the same problem; the arms if it wasn't for that I could make playable characters, well they are playable now but just look disgusting

http://i698.photobucket.com/albums/vv348/sparedlife/TRAODLara/KurtisArms.jpg

Mokono
29-06-09, 03:26
Nice theory. So you really "cheated" the game by putting LaraS.chr meshes in Lara.chr, so it's a LaraS inside a Lara, right? So a complete set of Lara.chr made of different models can be done without affecting savegames... That would be helpful for releasing .chr files compatible with fellows savegames.

As it goes so far all the NPC mesh has the same problem; the arms if it wasn't for that I could make playable characters, well they are playable now but just look disgusting

Right now as the game stands on the sales shelf you can interchange Lara.chr and LaraC1.chr saved games. I just added a complete LaraS.chr to that mix (it won't load LaraS saved games though since it's really Lara.chr)

Here's my LaraS Lara.chr
