View Full Version : Egypt - Obelisk of Khamoon Stuck on impossible jump!
Hey everyone,
Egypt - Obelisk of Khamoon
It's about 1/2 way through the level i guess. You've just moved into a corridor off the main middle square.
Theres 2 blades then a jump onto a small pointy column. You then have open shut wall trap.
THEN you have to jump onto another column that has a open shut wall trap ready to crush you while you are getting your balance.
FIRST of all I can hardly ever land on the column we're talking 1 in 50 tries
SECONDLY I then always have the exclamation mark and get crushed trying to balance myself!!
Please help i've spent hours on this now!!
In desperation....

Hmmm there seem to be some glitches where she won't jump on those, which makes things more difficult. Try jumping just in the moment where the walls close to gain some extra seconds and you should be fine. :tmb:
No thanks but even if i get on the column with most time to spare its not enough, anyone got a save game just after this jump if that is the only way you can get past the section?
thanks people

Yeah the tramps in that level are pretty difficult and frustrating... and as st4r said, try to jump when they are closing your path.

Try not jumping at the edge, but one or two steps back from it. This was one of the trickiest points in the game for me.
i've tried every step back from the edge and every angle i'm gonna need a savegame surely someone has one because they were so relieved to have got past it :hea:

Sorry, cannot help you then. :( I've only saved at the beginning of each level.

I had problems with this. Pretty much at every trap-corridor, thank God for all those checkpoints; you need them!
You just have to keep trying, you will get 'lucky' and finally get through. Gameplay should not be like this, it's like you know exactly what you have to do, your timing of Lara's movements are right, but she then won't lock-on to a pole, or she will go spasticated requiring you to press interact, by which time you are crushed. You die many times even though you have done nothing wrong; this is silly.
If that's the part with the 3 pillars and the glitch you're not even meant to go that way. You're supposed to climb back up the big room past all the blades to get to a switch at the top of the Obelisk.
This (http://www.tombraiderforums.com/showthread.php?t=97211) might help. :wve:
If you mean the point where you have three pole jumps with three crushing doors - when you get past this you get to the switch for the last bridge...
The poles are lower than the platforms at each end, so for the first jump you have to drop down to where the blade is, and then drop down again and hang to avoid the spinning blade. Listen to the doors shutting to get the timing right, with some trial and error you'll figure it out - then jump up a ledge at the moment the spinning blade passes by and immediately backflip onto the first pole. This first jump will always be perfect - and is easy.
The second jump, like you said is the killer... You jump, land and wobble, and crunch - the door gets you every time... I was stuck on this bit for FOUR days!!!
Finally I figured it out in a <doh> moment of realization... get ready to kick yourself...!!!
(I'm using the PC and imagine the relative button press would be the same on the PS2.)
sitting down? shin pads on? hidden the breakables?
...deep breath...
On the PC when you are wobbling after landing on a pole press 'E' (just once is good) and Lara will instantly regain her balance.
...and that simple one key press my friends is the solution to pole jumping!!!
On the PC the 'E' key is also used to reload guns when weapons are drawn, and it's the key you hold down when you want to climb up or down a rope, or a ladder... So whatever the corresponding PS2 button for those things is - then that's what you do on the PS2.
...and then you just jump across, and it becomes much easier, and flip the switch. On the way back across it's more difficult, you have to think about the timing of the doors to get through, slow down, and you'll get it after a few attempts i'm sure.

Even with the "E" key, I still get killed every time. I didn't pay money to be extremely frustrated and irritated; it's pure luck as to whether I can complete this section of the game or not; there's no skill involved, just countless repetitions of the same old frustrating junk. Great. it's about time games developers realised that there's a thin line but a big difference between an enjoyable challenge, and mindless, hair-tearing, unbearably repetetive, monotonous and now unbearable agitation. It's like trying to plumb a sink or remove an awkward spark-plug: challenging in a way which is anything but enjoyable. I bought the game so I could enjoy it, not so I could spend hours online searching for ways of avoiding/cheating parts of it.
I've lost track of how many times I've attempted this now. Been trying for a week maybe? Less and less frequently now because it's just so annoying. I'm starting to think that the game is corrupted in some way - but what the first post in this thread describes is exactly what I'm experiencing. I guess it's supposed to be like this. WTF? I'm not gonna attempt it for the 943,093,475,094,760,345,645,634,634,756,997th time just to see the EXACT SAME THING REPEATED OVER AND OVER NO MATTER WHAT I DO, I'm gonna keep searching online for a patch/cheat/savegame/hack/anything (which is how I found this thread in the first place), and if I can't find one I'm putting it back in the box and playing something else instead. :hea: :hea: :hea:
If anyone does find a solution, for the love of god, post it here so I can continue with the game.
Sort it out, Eidos. I enjoyed the game up until now.
P.S. I notice that there's a circular blade at the end of the pit I'm having trouble with. If by some inexplicable miracle I do ever manage to balance on that third spike long enough to jump without being crushed to death, and that circular blade kills me/knocks me off the edge, I'll not only put this game back in it's box, I'll put it in another box: a coffin, before setting it in concrete, along with a 40 megatonne nuclear warhead, dump it in the north sea for three millenia, exhume it, smear demon effluent all over it, launch it into the depths of deepest space and detonate the bomb just at the moment it hits the hottest star in the known universe, whilst reciting satanic voodoo rituals and sticking spikes in Eidos' logo with a team of suicide bombing ninja mental patients.
I'm guessing from the lack of "omg yeah me too" responses that this might be the result of a software corruption? I may try returning it today for a new copy.

Although SteveBob is wrong about it being a glitch/impossible to do the pit that way he is so right about it being a better choice about going to the top of the Obelisk as your second lever first. That way you can avoid the first 3 pole pit (which IS a complete **** on the way back) by jumping out of the 'window' into the water and climb back up using the ladder/down bridges to get to the final lever (scarab?) route.
The single pole pits and the triple pole pit here can be troublesome too. However, the trick to landing without requiring triangle (PS2 - restore balance button) is perfectly lining up the jump first. It's starting the jump by doing it on the run at a slight angle that seems to cause problems, like some other jump tasks in this game.
What doesn't help is that the camera has a habit of twisting when Lara lands on any pole so that in any 3 pole pit the second jump regularly requires a restore balance tap. You often don't have enough time to re-align the camera or restore the balance before the blocks get Lara. :-(
BTW the return through the 3 pole pit here just requires a slight delay in jumping from the second pole. You have wait on that middle pole to jump when the blocks slam and just start to separate from the final pole before jumping to it and quickly jumping to the grab at the end of the pit.
I am running the PC version. This is absolute BS. I literally almost broke my monitor my keyboard and many other things trying to get past this.
After about 1,000,000 tries. I decided to get a trainer.
This worked perfectly for me: http://www.sendspace.com/file/zs024e
I hit F1 for god mod and F6 for speed. Landed on the pillar the things smashed me but I didn't die so I then completed the jump really fast.
I hope this helps the people who are breaking stuff because of this BS bug.
