View Full Version : Nothing but frustration

I have been playing this game, am at about 2 hours, and I have to say it is pure frustration and absolutely no fun at all.
The battle system is terrible, the camera is so jerky. I think the rex battle was what really peaved me off.
But the game itself is just like Legend, it just takes a lot longer! And is more tedious! "Look, a ledge, Look, another ledge!":hea:
I am now playing Tomb of Tihocan, wondering if I will even go on. I got the giant Gong to fall, but apparently I saved "too soon", because now when I load it, the gong only falls halfway, and now I'll have to replay almost the entire level because of that damn bug!:cen:
Does anything get any better? Or have the least sence of fun in it? Thank heavens I only wasted $30.

I also think there are a lot ledges in the game, yet they are so visible. On the bright side, the combat is very good I must say - you just need to get used to it.

The level with the 'gong' is tomb of qualopec :wve:
I believe you mean Tomb of Qualopec.
The puzzles ramp up a lot in Greece, and the combat becomes less regular as well.
But if you're not impressed after St Francis Folly you probably should give up.

Well, if you don't like it upon completing St. FF, it's safe to say this isn't the game for you. So give it a chance until that level. (Or egypt if you're stretching to like it)
I personally began to love this game at the end of qualopec.

It gets better when you get to greece!
I was getting bored before then too. :o but know I'm in egypt and it's much more fun and required some skill.
The combat is actually very fun once you get used to it.
I used to hate it but now i've got the hang of it.

I agree with you.
I really agree with you, but it does get better once you get to Greece! I'm so sad they'v messed Peru so much up! Atlantis is also really bad... Egypt is my fave though. :)

Look at what he is saying. His comments about the gameplay, combat etc won't change when he gets to Greece. The levels are just a bit more interesting thats all.

Shuuut uup! The ledges also becomes less notiseble .. And the combat becomes harder, and that's better! Plus the levels in Peru is just hidious, especially the Lost Valley .. Got it ? :p

The combat may be slightly harder, but he doesn't like the combat, and it is still the same techniques required to beat the enemies. If anything it will be worse for him if the enemys are tougher, that will just magnify his problems! Fool!
The ledges are still very easily spotted in every area of the game! I never had a problem finding where to go. There is virtually always just one route to take.

FullmetalEd - my thoughts were the same, but it does get better. For me it did, anyway.
What really annoys me is the saving. I can't be doing with checkpoints which make me replay really long bits. I don't like doing the same thing 50 times. I stopped playing Prince of Persia for this reason and I fear it will be the same with Anniversary. All I'm doing is swearing at the game and it's just not fun. Can't be bothered with it.

There are a few moments which really bug me when it comes to saving. Especially the St. Francis' Folly level, with the spikes/wall-running thing. I wish you could save on the spot like in TR2. Now, I just let the checkpoints take care of it all and only make a manual save when I am turning it off, just to be safe.

I agree with most of what was sait about the :hea:-combat system. The reason why I :cen: hate it is because most of the time I don't even see the enemy on the screen while I am shooting at it. This is so  ridiculous.
But still, the "push arrow up" then "push arrow left"... cutscene gameplay is the stupiest idea that they could come up with. Why do we need that?
Anyway, if anyone could help me getting the hang of the combat system then I would be really reeeeeeeeeeeeeelieved. And one more thing. I am glad that my Rexy is history and I am ashamed to say that my fire-finger hurt bad when I finally "enjoyed" the stupid cutscene. So your help could cure my finger. Thanks.
well i hope i enjoy the game. i really liked the demo even tho it was slow 4 my computer.
maybe u should explore the croft manor. get used 2 the controls n stuff.
sometimes i depise a game then go back 2 it later realizing it wasnt so bad.

I like the game.
The problem is not the combat system, it's the camera. I couldn't do the 'adrenaline' attack much with the normal enemies because the camera is going in the wrong directions.
As soon as you reach egypt a lot of ledges are replaced with wallruns btw :)
The puzzles become also more difficult after Peru, so there is a reason to keep playing.
There a lot of checkpoints so you never have to replay more than 5 minutes because you died...
I liked Lara's personality more in Legend because her comments where much better. In TRA she seems like a uncertain wussy sometimes :D

If you haven't noticed, Lara is younger in Anniversary and it's the first time things like this happened to her which gives it a better effect in my opinion. Also, what you have to understand is that Lara is evolving to something close to human, every human has emotions and if you think about what you would do in her case she has a much more stronger personality...
Frustration has always been in tomb raider and the original was the most frustrating in my opinion but when you complete the frustration it's always a treat to reach the destination. It also needs a lot of thinking. I guess they should have wrote that you need high IQ to play this game...
I don't understand why everyone is having troubles with the camera. Playing on PC gives you chance to control the camera via your mouse too. Also, there is the 'J' button that places the camera always behind Lara whenever you press it.

exactly! you can even set how sensetive it is and invert both x and y axis (though i don't know WHy you would invert the x axis)
the problem with anyone who agrees with the first post is that they're stuck in a paradox, they want a challenging game, but once there is an obstacle (combat or camera) requiring a certain amount of skill to master, they give up. i feel sorry for CD, being insulted from their customers own incompitence.
you wouldn't buy a guitar and write a letter to fender complaining that you can't play it very well would you?

my suggestion, DONT go on, the experience is wasted on people with your instant gratification mentality.
sell your game to someone who will appreciate it's worth, then you'll have only wasted $15 or so. after all, a fool and his money are soon parted ;)

I have enjoyed the game a lot until Atlantis.
*Spoilers*
The part with the two winged atlanteans and the timed switch. I keep getting either shot off the ledge intothe lava or **** up on the timed ascent. The camera was what screwed me over a lot on this part. It was the first tiem I actually cried in frustration on a game. Grr lol

TR has always been like this as far as I can remember, I've always been throwing verbal abuse at Lara since it first came out lol :)
I'm on that part with the two winged things and the timed bars too, I can't get past cos when the camera moves, the buttons change and I just can't press all those buttons and move the camera aswell, it's too much, I thrown Lara in the pit a hundred times now (some on purpose :mis:) and I felt like crying lol
I don't like the camera, that is the only drawback to TRA for me, the rest is just typical TR annoyance :D

Heh i know, have you notised how annoying the camera gets in small rooms. Or if the camera is close to a wall .. I think they should release a patch, with a better camera, or Legends camera .. :)

Yeah it would make my life so much easier and my poor fingers lol
I hate it in small rooms, all I get is a face full of Lara's head,
which some people might not think is too bad lol ;)

07-06-07, 11:19
The camera is fine where the game has been designed to accommodate it, like the boss fights. But in many places elsewhere that shift in position while doing things like perpendicular leaps from a wall run completely changes the jump angle required. Don't get me going on the camera for confined multiple enemy areas or in narrow corridors either - I think it's clearly inferior to old TR not just Legend. Bring back the auto-camera (and proper FP aim/look) and tumble turn pleaae..
Yeah it would make my life so much easier and my poor fingers lol

maybe, it's what works best for the individual, for instance i think it's way, way easier to control the camera when i invert the y axis, it just seems more logical, if you tilt your head back then you'll be looking upwards... it just makes more sense to me.

LAWL! Some interestin' thread u guys have goin' on here! :)
I dunno y ppl complain bout in game cam, I just use a mouse and it controls 'n rotates just fine 4 me. Well either way we can always just hit "J" 'n it'll install a cam directly behind Laura. Also if u don't like pressin' "J" you can always customize it 'n assign that key 2 somewhere else. IMO the game is quite good, the only minus 'bout teh game I find that it's a lil' 2 ezy when it comes 2 checkpoints, I rkn there r one 2 many checkpoints assigned 4 every level. But even that doesn't really bother me than much, I am rather enjoyin' 'n lovin' Egypt atm! ;)

With all the whining about platforms remember that Tomb Raider is effectively a 3d platform game. Thank goodness they've done away with the obvious 'regular' blocks from the old games.
And I found the PC controls pretty ok. I've not played the console game so can't really compare the two. Has anyone played this game both on a console and PC?

I don't think it's a let down, I think it's hard but it's still good, I hate how scary the Atlanteans are tho :)
Yeah Egypt is great, I love the puzzles on there and all the jumps, not the blades tho...:D
i love this game and i was so happy in finished last night. still need to get a few secrets now though but atleast when i reply it wont take me forever to do certain things.
the levels are amazing and im soooo happy with the length. the trex battle to me was the easiest with the torso boss coming in second. natla follows that and then the cenatures were imo the hardest. cant remember if i have missed anylol.
my worst level was probs the whole of egypt. the enviroment was beautiful but it was sooooo hard lol still atleast i know what to do etc.
atlantis was cool but not as long as i thought
greece was cool but again some of the god levels were hard such as the knife one etc.
peru was my fave i think just because i love how one minuite your in a tomb the next your in a lost valley. it was cool to see bits so similar to the original.
im glad to see cd did an amazing job and i just cant wait for tr8. i hope they have more exotic levels in tr8 such as rain forests etc and i would love to see a level in a blue lagoon and a level in the china towns where you get to jump on the roofs of houses etc.
That's a shame. I guess Lara isn't for everyone

Overall, it takes some getting used too, if you havent played Legend for a while that is. The new adrenaline moves can not always work. So I agree the battle system does take some getting used too, and can be frustrating at times, especially with multiple enemeis. I dont mind the ledge climbing, after all, thats a big part of the game, as it has always been since day 1. The good thing is though, that i found, that when in a large area with loads of ledges & other climbables, it really gets your brain working, as to what/where to do/go.
I think if you stick with it, you will enjoy it. I have found it very rewarding, especially the beautiful Egypt levels, with really spooky background chanting, brrrr! send shivers down the spine.

For gods sake make up your ****ing minds already! TR1 was "tedious" and thats exactly how those of us who played it like it. It really disgusts me how so many people give up on TR and other games just because "its too haaaard!" or you dont dispatch enemies by mashing a billion different combos in a gory blood fest filled with reality-bending acrobatics and stunts, or because your copy has a bug, or because you dont have the brain capacity to work the camera. Kudos to CD, if I worked there I would have said "screw those ungrateful *******s" and thrown in the towel long ago.

:vlol:
Issues.
I spent 3 hours goofing around the manor last night just trying to get used to the controls, the manual grab feels so weird using a shoulder button on the PS2 controller. And the wall runs OK when in open areas to see where to aim the camera, but awkward in tight areas where you can't see where to aim it. Got thru caves so far, haven't had to use the adrenilin dodge yet. From what I have heard, some people are just hitting the wrong button, jump, instead of roll and are not activating the dodge properly. But I am wary of it too, sounds like it can get tricky while trying to move fast during an exciting battle. That's why I was practicing in the manor, to try and avoid constantly hitting wrong controls during the game. Too bad winston doesn't move so I could try the adrenilin dodge on him... :mis:
the first instance of the adrenaline dodge, i admit, i have to replay several times till i figure i have to press+hold the crouch for the reticules to come out. so the first bear keeps on mauling me, but when i figured it out, i tried the dodge vaulting forward to get behind the bear and got the reticule to come out, bang, bear is toasty... tried it several more times for consistency, it works.
