That problem often occurs after patches or when servers is down. You simply have to wait some hours before trying again.

Make sure that game has been allowed to access the Internet in your firewall settings.

Unable to connect to the game
If you receive the message ‘Unable to Connect’ or ‘Disconnected from Server’ immediately upon logging in, or if the connection hangs on ‘Connecting’, then World of Warcraft is not able to establish a connection to our servers, the most common reason for this is a firewall or router blocking the ports that the game uses, or the game program itself.
If you see the message ‘Handshaking’ or ‘Authenticating’ before being disconnected, then a connection is being made, but the game is disconnecting before completing the connection process, in this case section 3: ‘Disconnected from Server whilst playing’ will have more relevant information.
If you use a software firewall, please make sure that World of Warcraft, and the ports used as mentioned above, have unlimited access to the Internet.
Normally there are no configurations necessary when using a router, because all traffic that World of Warcraft creates is initialized by the client. The router itself registers the ports used in its own NAPT index, allowing returning data packages to pass. Any configuration of the port forwarding chart (also known as DMZ configuration) is normally not required, and in combination with dynamic IP address assigning, it is not very helpful.
Unfortunately Blizzard cannot provide any support for configuring your router or firewall, due to the great variety of devices and software available. For assistance and more information please refer to your manual, which is provided by your manufacturer or software developer.
Deactivated firewalls
It is always a bad idea to disable a firewall. This often causes a lot of firewalls to shut down network traffic partly or completely, alternatively, it leaves your computer open to infection from Viruses and Spyware. Please activate and configure your firewall correctly.
nForce Active Armor Firewall
Some of the latest NVIDIA motherboards have a hardware firewall that should protect your system from attacks. If you own a main board with an nForce chipset, please make sure that the firewall is configured properly.

Post patch problem
Sometimes a connection error occurs after patching World of Warcraft. This is most often caused by a software firewall that blocks the connection attempt.
Some firewalls create checksums of program data used, and these firewalls check these data every time a program connects to the internet.
Because a patch changes the size and checksum of the WoW.exe file, then the prior firewall setting concerning World of Warcraft is not correct anymore, and this leads to an aborted connection due to rejection of the program by the firewall.
Solving this problem is usually straight forward. First delete all records for World of Warcraft, which is found in the list that a firewall provides for all programs running on a computer (e.g. choose ALLOW, BLOCK or ASK to determine what a program may or may not do). After establishing a new setting for World of Warcraft, the program is permitted to access the internet again. If you are not sure about how to do this, then refer to the documentation provided with the firewall for more information. The problem can of course also be solved by uninstalling and then reinstalling the software firewall.
Note: We do not recommend that you uninstall your firewall if you are not able to reinstall it.
Blocked ports
This is not very common, but it is possible is that your network provider blocks or limits the port World of Warcraft uses for gameplay: TCP port 3724
This limitation finally ends with the error message that you unable to connect. So if you can eliminate all other reasons, that can cause this error message, please contact your provider to make sure that they are not limiting or blocking TCP port 3724.

What firewall do you have?
If Windows Firewall - then shut it down and install better one, e.g. Zone Alarm (http:///www.zonelabs.com). It's more flexible and has so-called "Game Mode" to allow gaming with no restrictions.
