Hmm... I will give it about 8/10.
This is just compared to all the other Tomb Raider games I have played. Not all the games I've ever played in my life. It would be higher if that was the case.

Oh, and compared to how I would rate all the other Tomb Raiders:

Tomb Raider I - 9.7/10
Tomb Raider II - 9.7/10
Tomb Raider III - 9.8/10
Tomb Raider: LR - 8.9/10
Tomb Raider: C - 8.5/10
Tomb Raider: AoD (from what I've played so far) - 7.5/10

Compared to the other TR games (to give some perspective of my opinion):

TR5: 7
AOD: 7

Earlier I would have given it an 8/10 but there's some nice tricky stuff in the Great Pyramid that has raised it to a 9.5 for me.

The others:

TR1 10/10
TR2 10/10
TR3 9.5/10
TLR 9.5/10 (I'm knocking off a half point for that tedious Cambodia level that can't be skipped - for god's sake, we know how to jump and grab!)
TRC 6/10
AoD 6/10
Legend 7/10

I give Tomb Raider: Anniversary a score of 7/10. I felt that it definitely improved upon Tomb Raider: Legend, which I also give 7/10 (TR:A reaches closer to 8/10 than TR:L in my mind), but it felt like it was missing something, something which the original had, or perhaps didn't have. Perhaps it was the use of cut-scenes which I felt weren't needed, perhaps due to the interactive cut-scenes, perhaps due to the obvious ledges, perhaps due to the shooting targets on walls which I didn't like since I felt they were misplaced in tombs... I'm not sure. Although there are some things which I preferred in Tomb Raider: Anniversary, such as the improved controls and combat, and some other things which I can't remember. I'd give the original game 7/10 too, and although I'm not completely sure since it's a difficult decision to make, I'd say I like Tomb Raider: Anniversary and the original game as much as each other.
I was expecting to give Tomb Raider: Anniversary 8/10, but since it included some things which games from the present time have which I don't like, I didn't like the game enough to give it that score.

I'll give it 9 out of 10.

I try not to give perfect scores unless something just totally blows me away as being totally flawless. This does have it's flaws. Very few, but it does have them.

The camera can be buggy at times. The control is good, but not perfect. Some of that may have more to do with my controller than the game, so I'm not going to moan too much about it.

Over all, though, it's a great game. It has everything I liked about Legend (unlocking scenematics so you don't have to go all the way through the game to see them again, moving away from grid based play).

It also did away with some of the more irratating bits from Legend. I didn't particularly mind Alaster and Zip, at least not until I got a taste of what it's like without them. I begin to see how right some people were when they said they gave away too much. It's also nice that it's back to more puzzle based play than combat.

I also like how it is, for all intents and purposes, Tomb Raider 1. But updating it makes is it so even having played the first one, this has some surprises for me.

So yes. Great game. I'm glad I got it. Glad I also got a controller so I'm not going at it with a keyboard. Keyboard gameplay just doesn't work for me anymore.

judging tomb raider anniversary merits relative to ps2 platforming actioner pedigree games the likes of god of war 1 and 2, jax+daxter 3, ratchet+clank uya, sega's kunoichi, year between 2004 to 2007 games with high caliber production values. treating it like core's tomb raider never existed?

8.0 out of 10.

core's tomb raider judging it with less cynicism and par with year 1996, as ground-breaking as the game was.

9.0 out of 10 - the extra point is really because when TR came out it was ground-breaking.

then again i really would prefer crystal dynamics' tomb raider anniversary than core's tomb raider.

Hmz. this requires some creative thinking as TR1 compared with the latest is a little silly because obviously the latest technology rocks.
I actually played TRII before TRI and I like TRII more because of the offshore rig + underwater levels which I really liked.
TRI gets a 9,5 for it's creativity and a 10 for it's story + FMV
TRA gets a 7 for it's graphics design and a 10 for it's gameplay and I have to give the story a lower grade because I did not like the fact that Lara was getting all emotional about Larson and the fact that she was looking at her hands so many times. (personally I think they shouldn't have changed her trademarks so much, the simple things, like her glasses she wears for the snow. (they could have also used sun blindness here which I think that would have been absolutely great!...)
TRL gets a 10 for it's next gen graphics and a 7,5 for it's gameplay as it was short.

Angel Of Darkness: 9/10
Chronicles: 6/10
Last Revelation: 5/10 (so boring, seriously... like one BIG level. *yawn*)

TR7: 7/10

I really love Anniversary! But it doesn't get as high score as the original one from me.

The negative things:

some levels were cut short
interactive cutscenes (pierre, larson etc. turned in to IC's)
some really annoying camera controls (the maze camera mostly. I don't want to see the route from the sky, thank you very much stupid camera angle) Camera clipping trough the walls & objects (not a biggie.. but sometimes the camera just went trhought the walls and showed the outsides of the levels.
Glitchy animations & a very glitchy manual grab.

The positive things:

Classic puzzles.
Classic orientated level desing. Maze like structure and puzzling moments where you wonder what to do.
Classic inventory. A nice little touch. I wish it'll stay in the future games aswell. Atleast as an option.
Optional Manual Grab. Loved, loved loved it!
Smooth controls.. smoother than in legend. Some of her animations seem to be much better and less glitchy.
Great atmosphere. The random chanting monks and nature sounds.. just give me the chils. :tmb:
Amazing musical score! I could just exit to the menu and listen to the music for hours and hours. :tmb:
Great balance of exploring, adventure, puzzle solving, avoiding traps and action.
Random enemy attacks! Just gotta love those.. they always make me jump! :D
Great story line. Sure.. there were some scenes that didn't have that classic Lara attitude. But so much better from TR7! :tmb:
The scenery. Just mind blowing. I was so amazed by the graphics on the PS2. Just.. beautifull!

Uhm.. I'm sure there are lots of other things that I like and dislike. But I'll write them down as I finish the game and my review :)

After playing every game to it's fullest as they came out (Been playing the series since I was 6), these are my ratings as follows:

Tomb Raider 1: 10/10
Tomb Raider 2: 8/10
Tomb Raider 3: 9/10
Tomb Raider The Last Revelation: 10/10
Tomb Raider Chronicles: 5/10
Tomb Raider Angel of Darkness 2/10
Tomb Raider Legend 7/10
Tomb Raider Anniversary 9/10

Tomb Raider 1 was probably the best gaming experience I've ever had, (and it was possibly my first, but I can't really remember if that might have gone to Resident Evil) and even now very few games come close to the creativity that was put into it.

Tomb Raider 2 while not my favorite, TR2 probably has the most nostalgia for me. They kept most of the best features of the first game while adding some new (Sharks terrify me, fyi). While it was not as good as the original, it was close.

Tomb Raider 3 is slightly above Tomb Raider 2 for me, but not enough to compete with the original. I have to admit I did in fact like the London levels even though they where a big departure from actual Tombs. However, they kept them to the same formula they used for Tombs. Traps, ledges, etc and I think that's why it never occurred as awkward to me. Exploring Area 51 was also amazing lol.

Tomb Raider 4 was so long, and spent almost entirely in dark, isolated tombs. I also really liked how this one had more "characters", such as Von Croy and Lara's Guide (Guy with the torch who turns on her). This one seemed really story driven to me, and was the first game to reach the level of the first tomb raider in my mind. It was also very long, and still good to the last grain of sand.

Tomb Raider Chronicles was the first game I was disappointed with - it wasn't horrible, but it just didn't quite measure up to the previous games. This was the first one she really just did not seem like Lara to me, nor did she seem like much of a "Tomb Raider". Of course after the cliff hanger ending they gave us in TR4, I was sooo glad to play through this one just to find out that "we've found her!"

Tomb Raider Angel of Darkness... Where to start? I was really really looking forward to this game after finding out that Lara was alive, and that the characters from TR4 (Von Croy) would be coming back. It seemed like Tomb Raider was going in a more story driven route, little did I know the story they had chosen was just NOT Lara Croft. Even so, I could have lived with them turning her into a whining idiot had she been a whining idiot that was capable of movement. I admit, there was a certain charm to the clunkiness of the classic Lara's movement, but she was never difficult, just somewhat slow. Lara in AOD died more of her own mistakes than mine, and I found myself fighting her more than I was fighting the environments or enemies. I won't even get started on trying to control Kurtis. All in all though, even if the controls had be absolutely flawless, I just felt running around Paris collecting chocolate bars and money with no use just was simply not the game series I had fallen in love with, and the changes to it where not for the better. This was without a doubt the most disappointing game I have ever played, and unlike the real classics, even after completing it I did not feel a since of accomplishment so much as I felt relief that it was over. I hate to admit that happened with a game titled Tomb Raider.

Tomb Raider Legend, I almost didn't even want to try after how upset I was over Angel of Darkness. In fact, I would not have bought it had it not been on sale. I was actually so burnt out on the series that even after I bought it, I didn't play it for about a week, which going by the fact that the wrap around the boxes for all the older games never lasted more than 5 seconds, is a big deal. When I finally did get to playing the game, I was instantly impressed with the graphics (Got it for 360). Exploring that first area in Boliva and realizing that Lara controlled beautifully literally shocked me because it felt like Tomb Raider was Tomb Raider again... Then the mercs came in. That was disappointment #1, and then I noticed that I was walking a straight line, which was #2. Thankfully, the puzzle at the end restored my faith in the game a bit and I pressed on. Lara again was different. I don't know that we'll ever really get the original Lara back, though I like this replacement Lara over the AOD Lara - at least I don't have to worry about her going suicidal. As the game progressed the changes started to grow on me, and I loved it up to that mid-game boss fight with Amanda... oh wait, you mean that was really the end??? Disappointment #3 :(. While the game was far from perfect, it was leaps and bounds better than AOD was and it got me interested in the series again. Had the mercs been less repetitive, the levels less linear, and the overall game longer, this would have gotten an easy 8 or 9 from me. However, I could tell the game was a big step in the right direction.

Tomb Raider Anniversary was the most pleasant surprise I have had in years. Lara is the closest she has been to real Lara since TR: LR, and the levels are such a great (but not perfect) mix of new and old TR1 levels. She still has her perfect controls from legend, and now that Zip and Allister are gone, it actually feels like a classic Tomb Raider again. Not only because she is in familiar environments but because of how the game plays out. I really felt like I was adventuring again. Nostalgia aside, this was a truly good game. Nostalgia included this was a truly amazing game. I also didn't have a problem accepting the changes to the story since most of them where similar to the original, but just with a more cinematic twist. I'm also not minding the Lara's parents thing, if they handle it right I think it will turn out just fine. This was not perfect, but was very close. The only things that could have improved are that they need to stop trying to move my camera for me. They have given the player control over it, they need to keep it that way, when it changes angles mid grapple it is very irritating. The only other thing is that this was not as long as the original tomb raider, though I feel this is because tomb raider 8 took priority over this project.

Overall, I'm seeing a pattern of improvement from the last two games, and I think after the staff had to play through the original so many times, their next game will be very true to the series, while still evolving the series.

... wow that was a long post.

TR1 - 9 (almost perfect)
TR2 - 8.5 (not as good as the first one, but still very good)
TR3 - 6.5 (going on the wrong direction)
TR4 - 7 (nice puzzles but the game was lacking fresh ideas)
TR5 - 5 (going down...)
TRAO - 3.5 (interesting approach, bad development)
TRL - 8 (is she still alive?!)
TRA - 9.5 (all of TR1 greatness taken to a new level, near perfect)

The only thing that keeps me from giving TRA 10 is the camera system and the absence of next gen graphics - it looks great anyway. I had to get used to the camera because sometimes it just gets in the way of playing this great game.

It's a good game, but I really hoped the ledge-to-ledge design will be out. Now it's even worse than in Legend, but at least Anniversary isn't so linear, short and puzzles are better, although quite easy. Camera is another bad thing on PC, half of the deaths I've been through on my first play were caused because I didn't see where to go next when I was hanging on the ledge. New moves are stupid, since they're just ripped-off from PoP as well as the whole level designs, adrenaline dodge is totally wrong, I really hate that every new game has to have bullet-time. I so much miss monkeybars, block to block jumping, saving whenever I want and more exploration. Music seemed to me quite indistinctive except the menu and fights.

The scoring in this thread is kind of ambiguous cause it's hard to tell what the numbers mean.

I mean, how could anyone give TR1 a 10 out of 10? When a score like that is given, there is no way to go but down. I guess graphics don't play in some people's scoring. It's like me giving a 9 or 10 to Quake 2. I don't care how good I though it was at the time, it looks like crap now (and now is what counts cause no way could I go play it again now and enjoy it). I guess some just give out 10s like popcorn. I haven't given out a 10 yet. 10 means perfect and there is no such thing in a game (or anything else).

Anniversary is about a 7.5 for me (TR1 would be about a 5). If it had a save anywhere function, I would have given it a 9 (that's how much importance I placed on a save anywhere function for this game). I still rate Legend a little higher, mainly just for the enjoyment factor alone (highly subjective).

A game over 7, I would keep on my computer and continue to play it. A game rating for me is going to change with time. I might rate a game at 9 and 2 or 3 years later, I might rate it a 6 or 7 because it's going to relative to what I'm currently playing (and what my current taste is). A rating I would give would be for a given time frame.

As an independent game, I'd give it an 8/10. As a remake more like 6. The reason is that some level were butchered. Vilcabamba (my fav in TR1) The Cistern/Tihocan, Atlantis/The Great Pyramid and Lost Valley.

The Valley part was wasted because they removed all those side caverns. You just kill 6 dinos and rexy and go back.

The rest of the game get:
TR1 9/10
TR2 9/10
TR3 9/10
TR4 8.5/10
TR5 4/10 (would've scored more if the story was more planned, but I guess that wasn't Core's fault)
TR6 4/10 (would've scored more if Prague wasn't a total bore)
TR7 7/10 (Would've scored more if it weren't linear, short, easy and all the other reasons mentioned a million times.)

Tomb Raider = 10/10
Tomb Raider II = 10/10
Tomb Raider III = 10/10
Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation = 9/10
Tomb Raider: Chronicles = 8/10
Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness = 8/10
Tomb Raider: Legend = 6/10
Tomb Raider: Anniversary = 7/10

;)

I'm left with an empty feeling after playing it - a feeling of disappointment.

my score for TR:A is 9

for TR1:7 (max)

proly many disagree, but i wont score TR1 as the date would be 1996... it wasnt the question anyway.
Even if a i dont count the graphic i still have to consider that Lara has more moves, the spaces are bigger, the puzzles have more variety. The boss fights not just jumping and shooting, better cutscenes and there are many bonus elements in the game unlockable by artifacts.
Many says CD left out big parts from the original, but they forget that CD also made some parts more complex, more challenging. for example i have found this video in TR1 topic:
