View Full Version : Compass???
What is compass for? I mean is it there just for fun or does it have some purpose?
This has been bugging me since I first played it... (lol)
So what are your thoughts about it?
:wve:
I thought that too first, but it is kinda pointless :wve:
I think it was originally supposed to be used with a map. You can actually see the map item in a beta video of TR1 when the inventory is opened.

Oh! Yes, I forgot about that! And it matches with flamez's theory. I'll find the video on you tube:

Whoa haven't seen TR1 beta before, anyways yeah I think the compass was something to make the game look cooler or something...
I've never seen that video either. It seems pretty close to the final version in terms of the level...I wonder how the map was meant to fit in?
In any case, it makes sense for lara to have some kind of compass, even if we don't have any use for it in-game. If I was going tomb raiding, I'd want a way to tell if I was going in circles :P
^ I'm glad you've seen it. ;)
And about the map - maybe the compass has some connection with the map??? Who knows....
Now I know what that extra item was in wadmerger!:(
i suppose its useful for walkthroughs too to be abl to say :
"Head north through the corridor and pull the lever on the east side of the room"
#
etc.

What are you talking about??? What's wadmerger?

I don't know what the point was with the compass, I found it pretty useless. :o

As someone said above (Can't remember who. Sorry) it does sort of add to the realism of her bag contents. It would be a bit silly to go exploring without a compass. I like that you can check your stats and level name with it in later games, though.
I always figured that it was either something that was added for a purpose and then left in after the idea was scrapped, or just added for interest.
I remember someone saying that a similar thing happened with the save diamonds on TR3. I noticed that instead of letting me save they work as medi-packs in the PC version, however I think it is different for the Play Station version (I've never played the play station TR3, so I don't know).

TR III save crystals just save your progress, that's it, would be nice if they acted like medi packs, like in the PC version, would save a few that's for sure, and probably enable most PS users to complete without the need to use any.
I've never used it, but I always assumed that if you were stuck, looking at the compass would point you in the right direction.
I've never understood why the compass was included, but if there was originally a map to use with it first, this explains why it was here.
BTW thanks for this video, I've never seen it before. :)
There was originally supposed to be a map? I'm actually quite glad they didn't put that in.
Boy, that music really gets you wanting to play TR1 again!

That's the powerful spell TR1 has over all of us, well most us who enjoy this first outing anyway. :D
I don't think I ever looked at the compass, but I like the idea of having a map

Geez, I must have been an oddball or something. I used it all the time. :)

For what? I still never figured it out! Maybe that's why I get lost all the time, I'm lost right now in the Tomb of Tihocan.
Lets try this again:
I'm in the big room with all the doors, you can see through the windows that one has a save crystal, and the others have gorillas and tigers I remember..
and I think I have to step on the 4 tiles-- which have writing on them that looks like graffiti; at the bottom I swear it says "RC + ENED"-- to open the doors --
and I'm half scared to choose one, because I remember getting the crap beat out of me here once before.
Nooo you have to move the block onto the tiles to open the doors. sigh.

The compass was just included, as it's a pretty standard archeologist or explorer piece of navigation. It served no purpose and was replaced in TR2 as the stopwatch. Later in Tomb Raider IV, the compass was revived and served the purpose of level and weapon cheats, as you had to face precisely North before entering the cheat.
I assume it's just for walk-throughs.
Beats the hell outta me, maybe a map or something

It's crazy to think, that probably many of us scratched our heads thinking there must be some purpose to this compass, and just accepted the fact that Core just placed it in the inventory as a novelty item, but as some of you have mentioned, it seemed it was supposed to play a bigger part in the process of progressing through the first TR, which would have been cool, and interesting to see.

i dunno really  it does seem pretty pointless. The only thing I can think it could be used for is in walkthroughs when you could say 'you need to be facing north and then go and do this'. but thats still pretty useless Not if you're writing OR READING a walkthrough! What do you want, "Turn so the building where you got the med-pack is on your left," or "Face east"?
WOW! Guys you have resurected my old thread... :)
Geez, I must have been an oddball or something. I used it all the time. :)
WOW! :vlol:
if you want to see what the map did i found the download here :

yeah :o
i've just send core desgin an email about this :jmp:
maybe one day we may get an answer lol
Core does not exist any more Vagabond, so where exactly did you send the email to? Toby Gard over at Crystal Dynamics would know about the map.

www .core-design . com contacts page, gotta be some one from Core still floating around in there!
Note that the compass in TR1 works like a real compass, the red needle always points north so a player has to mentally swap E and W. In TR2 and later versions, the red needle magically indicates the direction Lara is facing.

There isn't any compass in neither TR2 or TR3, at least in the Playstation versions

So that's what that object is for... I've always wondered. That "map" object has been in every TR game I've tried editing, despite none of them actually having a map...

Well to be oriented...
I always followed it to find the way when i was LOST , but you dont need it for cheats as the future games ;)

I don't think it would of been put there purposly for help with walkthroughs, walkthroughs are created using that compass.
I reckon it was there for people to check like, how many steps you have made or how many secrets in the level you have left....
*looks at the Map item*
Hmm, now i know where Legend's PDA comes from...
