Did any Core design devs make/appreciate fan content?

I'm kind of curious about if any of the original TR devs ever took an interest in the fan community after the TRLE was released. Like did any of them make any custom maps for the game or did they specifically like any maps the community made?

The reason why I ask is because there are developers who greatly appreciated fan content and made some themselves. A good example is John Romero, one of the developers of Doom, has talked over the years about custom maps he really liked. And he even made a custom map for Doom recently in 2016 using a fanmade editor for the game.

So I'm curious, did any original devs reach out to the fan community?

I remember some of the old Core team were interested in making a custom level set in TRLE, but it never went past ideas.

About custom levels released by Core members, well, there aren't any. There is a level released by Gary LaRochelle though, who worked on Tomb Raider Gold games:

What Caesum said.
I actually emailed LaRochelle and this was his response.

Hi Zreen001,

Yup, Tomb of the Nelomgals is mine. And I did co-author the Tomb Raider Level Editor Manual. I also worked on "Tomb Raider: The Lost Artifact" (the expansion pack for "Tomb Raider 3")

My level may seem unfinished because I did not start out to make a level. When I and Rebecca Shearin (she also worked on the expansion packs for Tomb Raider 1 & 2) were trying to figure out ways to describe how things worked in the editor, we figured the best way was to build things and write about how we did it. So I ended up creating a "test" level that was just a bunch of disconnected things. After the manual was done, I looked at all of the odd things in the test level and thought "with a few more days of playing around with it I might have something to play." Two of the things I came up with and liked were the "sliding start" and the "strobe room."

Glad you're enjoying the custom made levels. I've had a chance to play a few of them and must say there are some talented level builders out there. It's nice to know we made a manual that so many people were able to understand and use.

Thanks for writing,

Best regards,
Gary LaRochelle

Also something nice to read is the interview with Gary LaRochelle, way back in 2002 though.

Thanks for bringing this up. I read this a long time ago, but it's always nice to have a refreshment every now and then.

Actually, I think we should have a sticky somewhere on the forums with links to interviews and such...
