Here is my submission. I re-wrote the final scene to Tomb Raider: Legend.

Dead End

"Kill her."

Lara had heard those words before. Narrowly escaping death had almost become a cliché part of her daily life. This time, however, it was different. This time the words echoed over and over again through her thoughts. She wasn't just trying to survive. Lara was not the prey. This time, she was the hunter.

Rutland lay on the ground, gasping for breath. Amanda crawls to his side. Gripping Excalibur in her hands, rage burning inside her, Lara almost didn't hear the guns begin to fire around her. Her anger begins to subside, and her survival instinct kicks back in. The deafening noise of her thoughts fade as the familiar sound of bullets begin to fly past. Her walk quickly turns to a jog, then a sprint. Lara dives overtop a large rock, spinning in the air. As she lands, Lara immediately drops into a crawl, scurrying for cover. Quickly, she surveys the scene. Mercenaries begin to move to her new location. She listens for their footsteps. They are closing in. Lara takes a deep breath. She leaps up from behind her cover, swinging Excalibur. The men have no time to react. The purple mist from Excalibur slices toward them as an extension of the blade. One by one they fall. Lara has had to kill before, but never like this. She almost couldn't hear herself screaming as she swung back and forth. Soon, no one was left standing.

Heart pounding, hands shaking, she turns her attention back to Amanda. Still grieving over Rutland's now lifeless body, Amanda hadn't noticed the fighting had stopped. Lara begins to walk towards her. Her grip on the sword loosening, step by step she makes her way toward Amanda. Excalibur falls to the ground, breaking the silence. Amanda looks up to see Lara standing over top of her. She reaches for her necklace. Lara hits Amanda on the side of the head with the butt of her pistol. Amanda screams, curling up as she falls to the ground. Lara crouches down and grabs hold of the artifact around Amanda's neck. Tearing it off the chain, she walks to the edge of the cliff and drops it.

Lara watches as the curse Amanda had carried for so long falls into the rushing water below. Then, like a wave pulling back the shoreline and then returning with a crash, all the adrenaline and fear catches up to her. Lara falls to her knees. Crawling on all fours, caching her breath, Lara looks up to see a dazed Amanda picking up Excalibur, heading toward the stone deus. Panic fills Lara. That panic soon turns to fear, and then to anger and energy. She stands up, attempting to run toward Amanda. With a pain filled cry, Lara leaps toward Amanda, tackling her to the ground. Lara stands up and grabs the sword. With her last ounce of strength, she thrusts it into the stone deus. The ground shakes. The sound of grinding rock fills the air. Soon the entire area is glowing with green and white light. Amidst all the confusion, Lara almost didn’t see the portal appear in front of her. That’s when she hears a familiar voice.

“What… Who are you?”

Lara couldn’t believe her eyes. It was her mother.

“Mother… It’s Lara. Your daughter!”

“What? What about my daughter?”

Lara forgets all the emotion and pain she had endured. This is what she had been looking for all these years. She begins hobbling toward the light. Just as she starts to speak, Lara is cut off.

“Take out the sword!”

Lara looks to Amanda. She is clinging to the stone ruins, barely able to stand on her own.

“It will explode unless you pull out the sword!” yells Amanda.

Lara tries to respond, but her mother acts too fast. Just as soon as it had opened, the portal containing Lara’s mother closes back up. With a crash, the stone halo that had been illuminated with Amelia falls to the ground.

Amanda drops from the stone. Moaning in pain, grabbing at her head where Lara had landed a blow moments ago. Barely conscious, Amanda looks up to find her herself staring down the barrel of Lara’s pistol.

“All these years I blamed myself. But, it was you. You killed her!” screams Lara.

“Killed her?” Amanda responds. “She’s not dead. She went where I was supposed to go. Where you could have gone!”

Lara barely hears the words coming out of Amanda’s mouth. She had been so close. All the years of searching had come to this very moment. Now, instead of having her mother brought back into her life, she was holding her gun against the head of a woman she once called a friend.

“Make sense right this second, or I swear I will execute you where you stand!”

“Av-“ begins Amanda. She stutters over her words. Her head began to droop. Then the shot goes off. Of all the gunfire Lara had ever heard, the shot that killed Amanda was the loudest. Hand shaking, still aiming at the spot where Amanda had been kneeling, Lara watches as Amanda’s body falls backwards, limp. The echo of the gunshot seemed to fill the air for hours. Nothing moved. Nothing made a sound.

“Lara…” Zip began. Lara reaches up to her earpiece and shuts it off. Holstering her pistols, she heads for the zip line leading out of the ruins.

Lara had not slept for two weeks since she had returned from Bolivia. Every time she closed her eyes, she saw dozens of lifeless bodies amidst the broken ruins. The soldiers. Rutland. Then, Amanda. Lara steps onto the cold marble floor of her bedroom. Putting on an evening gown, she heads down the hallway to the library. Slowly, she opens the door. At the desk, Alistair is hunched over, asleep. Lara approaches quietly. She glances at the clock. 3:34am. Alistair had been awake almost as much as she had the past two weeks. While the thought of Amanda’s last moment alive haunted Lara the most, she could tell it had affected everyone in the house. Lara had been especially cold to her colleagues since she returned. Part of it was that she had returned with nothing to go on. With Amanda and Rutland dead, there were no further clues. Before, Lara had always returned home with some sort of lead to chase. Now, they had nothing.

“Oh! Lara!” shouted Alistair as he awoke to find Lara looking over his shoulder.

“I’m sorry, Alistair. I didn’t mean to scare you.” It was one of the only things she had said to Alistair since she returned. The jolt they both got made them smile. Though only for second. Then the weight of events they found themselves buried in returned. Alistair had been coping with the stress of the situation by doing what he did best. Research. Though mostly pessimistic when it came to the legends Lara often chased after, now he could do nothing but embrace them.

“Um, oh. I have been looking through some more material since this morning. Given the relief carvings on the ruins in Bolivia are complexly unique, there isn’t much to go on. I did bring out some material on ancient Japan. Perhaps Takemoto did not realize how old his artifact truly was?”

Alistair looks up at Lara with an uneasy smile. The likelihood of finding a connection now was slim. She smiled back knowing he was doing his best to help. Though deep down, they both knew the answer was not in Japan. Neither of them knew where answers were. All they could do right now was pretend to keep trying.

Lara left the library for the main hall. The glow of fiber optics and computer monitors that once lit up Zip’s office well into the night were now gone. He had left four days ago. No one knew Lara better than Zip and Alistair. Though she didn’t let anyone know her true feelings very often, Zip and Alistair both saw Lara hurt inside. Alistair did his best to cheer her up by working even harder than his already inhuman productivity could manage. Zip tried to help by working too. However, this time was different. What happened in Bolivia had shaken Lara like nothing he had ever seen. She came home a different person. He had tried to talk to her. He wanted to get her to open up about what had happened. But Lara refused. Finally, she told Zip to take some time off. She didn’t know when she would be ready to continue the search for her mother.

“When we have a lead, I will call you.”

That was all she said. She looked at Zip, unsure of that to say next. Though only those few words were spoken, the two had an entire conversation by exchange of glances. They both knew it may be the last time they would see each other. She knew the look of disappointment on Zip’s face was not because he was out of work. It was because the family that Lara, Alistair and him had become from working together was breaking up. Zip didn’t blame Lara for what she had done. He just wanted to help. Lara knew this. But the thought of dealing with what had happened in Bolivia was too much right now.

Slowly, Lara came down the stairs. She took a seat in front of the fireplace. Lara stared into the flames until morning came. Though she held some small sliver of hope inside of her that tomorrow may be a better day, she knew more days like this were sure to be in line. For this first time in her life, Lara was truly lost.

An interesting reflection on how Lara feels about killing people, ri_oh! It's the loss of information rather than actually killing her, that made a difference. Cool implications for where the story would go on in Underworld!

Underpus's Revenge

"Oh, that's lovely. I hope it's as blind as it looks."

Lara grimaced as she stared at the giant octopus, its bulk filling the pool of the vast chamber. She could see its tentacles wound tightly around pillars, suction cups adhering stickily to the stone. It was totally entrenched here. Yuck, she thought.

The walls dripped, the viscid limestone glittering in the lamplight. Convenient that someone had left the gas burning. Glancing upward, she saw the underside of the canopy of a great chandelier, the finials shaped like sharpened spikes. Surely this was too convenient.

She timorously picked her way along the passage to her right, leaping over crevices and avoiding the jagged rocks. I really must get waterproof boots, she thought. I always seem to end up barefoot when I go diving.

Lara hummed a bar from the Beatles song stuck in her head as she jumped to grab a crevice in a crumbling wall. She wasn't so sure about wanting to be under the sea after all.

Eventually she made it down, slipping on the shattered rock and avoiding taking a plunge into the octopus’s pool. How could she get passed it? It was firmly ensconced, blocking any movement forward. Dropping the chandelier on it would kill it, certainly, but what would she be left with then? A gigantic dead cephalopod that still blocked the passage.

Lara tried to recall what she knew about octopuses—it was a Greek word, not Latin, so the plural was not, in fact "octopi." They had been worshiped in ancient times in the South Pacific and Peru, and paintings of them had been found on amphorae in Knossos and Byzantium. They also tasted terrible in sushi, but were fine when fried.

Well, there was no help for it. She took a deep breath, clenching and unclenching her hands as she brushed her fingertips over the twin pistols at her sides.

It would have to be a good old-fashioned epic battle.

Stealing herself, she took two steps back and then performed a graceful swan dive into the water. The splash had aroused the interest of the octopus, whose tentacles began to lift slowly, as with great effort, while Lara swam through the murky water toward the creature. She wanted to get to it at close range: she wasn't sure how thick its slippery skin might be.

She emerged for air, and scrambled up onto a rock near the center of the pool. The creature seemed angry now, as if it knew it had been intruded upon. It's bloated head rocked from side to side as first one, then another, then another tentacle detached themselves from the surrounding walls. Lara swiftly drew her pistols, leveling them between the creature's eyes, ready to shoot. The octopus heaved itself up, seeming to grow even larger as it loomed over her, eclipsing the light of the lamp above. She readied herself. Three more seconds, and she would be close enough to fire into its eyes and kill it instantly. Two seconds. The water churned around her, and the octopus made a horrible sucking, roaring sound as it drew close. One second.

Suddenly there was a muffled explosion behind Lara. She wheeled as she heard voices calling out. The octopus too, had frozen, as if confused. There were other people coming into the room. Lara's eyes flickered between the giant monster on one side and the chamber’s entrance on the other. Then she hurriedly holstered her pistols and dove back into the water, swimming as fast as she could for a shadowed crevice on the far side of the pool.

Several men in full scuba gear, and wielding automatic weapons, stepped into the flickering light. There must be someone else following her, sending mercenaries after her! It sounded like Amanda's work.

One of the men reached up and pulled the mask from over his face, and called out in an Irish accent: "Ah hell, look at the size of that thing. Come on boys, we’ll have to blast it." All five took aim. Lara held her breath.

The sound of the gunfire was drowned by the roaring of the creature and the cracking of stone as it heaved itself bodily from the water, hurling its massive body toward its attackers. Lara heard screams as the men were overtaken, two knocked senseless by flailing tentacles to plunge to the rocks below. One was picked up by another looping tentacle and shaken like a baby rattle. Meanwhile, the exit from the chamber was now clear. As the octopus finished off the last of its attackers, the crunch of bones audible in the echoing chamber, Lara clambered through the door and on up the stone-hewn steps.

She was glad now that she hadn't killed the octopus. She found she actually felt rather fond of it. She'd have to think of a good nickname for it later.

^ Very cool :) . I like how it twisted around to Lara's favor in the end. Very classic Tomb Raider.

Any more entries? I hope so. It's coming to the deadline.

Dia2blo 14-03-12 01:56

I've extended it by a bit. I'm happy we've got a few so far but would like to see more, plus i'm working on one myself. :) Hope this is ok with everyone.

Quasimodo 14-03-12 02:04

Yay! I've been giving brainstorming for my entry. This is a pretty cool prompt to work with.
