Yes, you may install Windows XP and Windows 7 side by side, but in that case you will need to:

  1. Partition your disk on 2 partitions
  2. Install Windows XP on one partition and Windows 7 on another one.
  3. Windows 7 will install dual boot and you will need to install XP first.
  4. Make sure to choose fresh installation when installing Windows 7, and not upgrade
