I decided to give this game another go, and it seems manual grab is completely unresponsive on my PC version. It works fine on my PSP, so I presume it's only a PC issue.
Any ideas on how to resolve it?

Works fine on my PC version, did you enable manual grab in options? Perhaps you already have the default buttons for some other action, did you check if you need to reassign manual grab to something else?

there is no Manual grab option on the PSP version.

You're right. Must be PS2 version then, but I remember one of them with a successful manual grab. I have three different versions (PC, PSP, PC). The PC is just the most convenient for now.
Yes, manual grab is enabled and assigned to its own key.
