Thanks for these links, I didn't realise that Jean Yves did actually appear in some copies of the game. Pity the real Jean Yves complained; the story would probably have made more sense if the original character had been included.
And what's wrong with starring in a TR game anyway?

I thought of another possibility today: the designers DID mean for the glasses to indicate Jean-Yves's capture, but the didn't keep all the elements straight. In particular, they could have forgotten it's possible to see the glasses, and then return to Alexandria to find Jean-Yves in his office.

^ i thought that might have happened since game designers forget stuff all the time. especialy if you are forced to make a game each year...

Well, remember that we skipped from Cleopatra's Palaces to City of the Dead? I'm guessing that there probably was a return to Alexandria planned for that, and that's where the glasses came from. I doubt they belong to Von Croy as he's still wearing his glasses in the FMV where he's possessed by Seth.

Why they were left in Coastal Ruins by the designers, I do not know.

In hollywood films yes. But a recent documentary, with the real jean-yves in it, has discovered that cleopatra was murdered by Octavian (later Augustus Caeser).

Because they're human.

I suppose they were Jean-Yves, but then they cut the final return out of the game, so instead they wanted us to believe they were Von Croy's.

I believe that it has been discussed that the route from Hall of Demetrius was originally different....remember the door that isn't a door rr?

In all probability, the visit to the room with the broken glasses was originally part of a different travelpath with slightly different story elements.

Yes, along with the skeletons near the glasses that can only be triggered in the Level Editor version.

Well, there was discussion on the beta TR4 here:
