I think a lot of folks are brainwashed by this Assange into thinking he is some kind of hero and martyr... kind of like a Robin Hood figure. I suppose it's because he is a clever speaker, rebellious and gives the peeps what they want... in this case, drama.

There is no truth in it. The alleged offenses already qualify as rape under current laws (whether in the UK or Sweden). He doesn't even deny the charges. His defense is that he doesn't think it's rape if the women are asleep and can't stop him. I don't understand how anyone could defend him in this. Of course he should get a fair trial, but it's ludicrous to dismiss his own statements and act like rape isn't a big deal and/or shouldn't be prosecuted just because he's famous.

They're very well justified in being pissed off at a guy that's helped to endanger national security and put lives at risk. I would say that you'd react differently if Britain was the main victim of this (although this does still affect us anyway), but come to think of it you'd probably just see it as funny.

I'm still not certain that his effect was really as big as the US government says. This move was certainly not wise from a PR perspective. It helps establish them as the bad guys and Wikileaks as the good, oppressed guys.
