I think a lot of folks are brainwashed by this Assange into thinking he is some kind of hero and martyr... kind of like a Robin Hood figure. I suppose it's because he is a clever speaker, rebellious and gives the peeps what they want... in this case, drama.

Here is some interesting reading going around the internet at the moment..... Revelations by Assange's Australian barrister James Catlin (not sure what truth is in it, but worth a read).

There is no truth in it. The alleged offenses already qualify as rape under current laws (whether in the UK or Sweden). He doesn't even deny the charges. His defense is that he doesn't think it's rape if the women are asleep and can't stop him. I don't understand how anyone could defend him in this. Of course he should get a fair trial, but it's ludicrous to dismiss his own statements and act like rape isn't a big deal and/or shouldn't be prosecuted just because he's famous.

@The Great Chi: I reject this source website. The story there doesn't even begin to make sense. Trying Assange for something that wasn't a crime when he did it would not just be outrageous, it is literally impossible - both Swedish and supernational law explicitly forbid that. And apparently, if the police have reason to believe tha

The US military has designated Julian Assange and WikiLeaks as enemies of the United States – the same legal category as the al-Qaeda terrorist network and the Taliban insurgency. Declassified US Air Force counter-intelligence documents, released under US freedom-of-information laws, reveal that military personnel who contact WikiLeaks or WikiLeaks supporters may be at risk of being charged with “communicating with the enemy”, a military crime that carries a maximum sentence of death.

... I dunno what to say.. Are they just gonna drone him at the embassy in London?

^As spitting the dummy out of the pram goes, that's a mighty fine example. The American Government should patent childish grudges.

They're very well justified in being pissed off at a guy that's helped to endanger national security and put lives at risk. I would say that you'd react differently if Britain was the main victim of this (although this does still affect us anyway), but come to think of it you'd probably just see it as funny.

I'm still not certain that his effect was really as big as the US government says. This move was certainly not wise from a PR perspective. It helps establish them as the bad guys and Wikileaks as the good, oppressed guys.
