I think a lot of folks are brainwashed by this Assange into thinking he is some kind of hero and martyr... kind of like a Robin Hood figure. I suppose it's because he is a clever speaker, rebellious and gives the peeps what they want... in this case, drama.

Trying Assange for something that wasn't a crime when he did it would not just be outrageous, it is literally impossible - both Swedish and supernational law explicitly forbid that. They're very well justified in being pissed off at a guy that's helped to endanger national security and put lives at risk. I would say that you'd react differently if Britain was the main victim of this (although this does still affect us anyway), but come to think of it you'd probably just see it as funny.

I'm still not certain that his effect was really as big as the US government says. This move was certainly not wise from a PR perspective. It helps establish them as the bad guys and Wikileaks as the good, oppressed guys.
