PARISIAN BACK STREETS - Part 2 (Playstation players)

Some of the instructions provide some insight into the game because they usually refer to things that are no longer present in-game. In any case I've included all of the instructions I found in the text files and organized them myself. Most of the instrusctions present here were also found in this level's sound files. Most of them were recorded but there are a few exceptions.

PS2 UNUSED INSTRUCTIONS

Quote:
PREPARING FOR SOMETHING
Here we go.

Note: Could apply to any running jump or before a long shimmying

INSTRUCTIONS ON TURNING AND SIDE STEPPING
To turn on the spot use the left and right Directional buttons, to side-step use left and right Directional buttons whist holding Walk.

Note: Could be applied anywhere in the level but most likely while searching the drawers and cupboards.

To sidestep, push right or left on the Left Analog stick whilst holding down L1.

Note: An alternative instruction to side stepping with Analogue Sticks

INSTRUCTIONS ON OPENING DOORS
Let's see if I can open this door.
To try opening the door stand in front of it and press Action.

Note: It might’ve applied to any door you had the key to or it might’ve applied to the door in route B that leads back to the start of the level or for the door at the end of route B that leads back to the beginning of route B.

INSTRUCTIONS ON HIDING INSIDE BINS
I need a hiding place. That bin will do. Walk up to the bin and press Action. When the coast is clear press Action again to get out.

Note: There is a total of 3 bins in the level. This might’ve applied to any of them in case Lara was seen by the police from afar. However there is a whispering tone which suggests that it might’ve been applied to the bin in route B, the invisible one near the wall because Lara keeps a whispering tone during a few instructions in that area.

INSTRUCTIONS ON HAND TO HAND COMBAT
If I'm unarmed, or don't have a weapon drawn, tap Action and I'll punch my enemy.
To hit the enemy with a right and left punch, double tap Action.
To kick, firmly push Action

Note: Alternate HTH combat instructions. Notice that the buttons have changed from R1 to the Action button. Lara cannot fight the police as she will automatically surrender so this might belong in another level

OBSERVATION
Uh oh! A guard dog. I'll try another route.

Note: There is a chained dog in Parisian Back Streets, maybe Lara is referring to him. Dogs would’ve alerted the police.

INSTRUCTIONS ON SWIMMING
That water looks deep enough to swim in.
Use the left Analog stick to guide or swim forward.
To climb out at the water's edge push forward on the left Analog stick and press the Action button.
To swim under water press and hold Jump.
Use the left Analog stick to guide me and the Jump button to stroke forward.

Note: There is no water in Parisian Back Streets, the first moment we encounter water is in Bouchard’s Hideout so it’s possible this belongs there.

INSTRUCTIONS ON LOOKING AROUND
To look around press and hold R3 whilst moving the right Analog stick.
Use the right Analog stick to rotate the camera.
To look around press and hold R2 whilst moving the right Analog stick..

Note: Could be applied anywhere in the level but most likely in the beginning or in a wide open space. Notice the alternative instructions to look around.

INSTRUCTIONS ON WALKING
Press the Walk button once to lock me into walk mode, press it again to return me to run mode.

Note: Most likely to be shown at the beginning of the level

INSTRUCTIONS ON 180 ROLL
Press the Roll button to perform a 180 degree roll.

Note: Most likely applied to a dead end or in a wide open space

INSTRUCTIONS ON CLIMBING OFF DRAINPIPES/SHIMMYING
Push the left Analog stick in the direction you want to go.

Note: It could’ve been an instruction to climbing off the drainpipe or on shimmying.

To Shimmy push the left Analog stick in the direction you want to go

Note: A more complete version of the instruction

OBSERVATION
This drop's too high to jump. I need a key to open this gate. Then I'll be able to jump to that rooftop and land safely.

Note: The rooftop was removed in the retail version, a ladder was placed instead for Lara to make her way down. The rooftop was likely removed because if Lara fell before she got to the walkway she would’ve landed on the rooftop and survived the fall, eliminating the need to get to the walkway and acquire the key entirely.

DECISION POINT
Hm, shall I go straight on or climb that ladder?

Note: This was removed because route B was removed.

INSTRUCTIONS ON CLIMBING UP OBJECTS
I can climb up on that air-con unit.

Note: The air-con unit was substituted by a ladder in the retail version.

OBSERVATION
Looks like that drainpipe is the only way to the rooftops.

Note: This is refering to the drainpipe on route A

OBSERVATION
I can move that barrel under the drainpipe.

Note: This refers to the barrel on route B

OBSERVATION
I'll make a dash for those steps.

Note: This cannot be verified, nevertheless there is an invisible structure right by the end of route B, you can tell there are some steps, maybe Lara is referring to them.

OBSERVATION
There must be a way up from here

Note: This line fits the end of route B where the player has to find a drainpipe or a bin to make their way up.

OBSERVATION
I could hide in that building. I'll head for the doorway.

Note: This line refers to the door that leads to Derelict Apartment Block. This cannot be verified because as soon as Lara hits the ground a cutscene is triggered. In previous builds this was not the case. It looks like it fits here.

OBSERVATION
This jump looks easy

OBSERVATION
I need to get lower

To block an attack press the defend button

INSTRUCTIONS ON CLIMBING BINS

ALTERNATIVE PS2 INSTRUCTIONS

Quote:

That is pretty amazing! And sad at the same time, of course, because I'd really love to play THIS! I love AoD anyway, but this... this...
I can't wait for the next entry!

I really don't understand this part of the video. How did dogs take her backpack from her in two seconds? Even Lara was not facing back ??? Is something missing?

I would know controls were really a big problem for Core by now, too. But who said "Sony refused controls and asked to renew them"? Source please. Really wonder this.

Great job, Kiko! I was wondering when you were going to post your theories regarding the Beta information. There are so many pieces to the puzzle, trouble being we aren't sure what made the beta cut from the drawing boards -- but you have pieced them together nicely. A pleasant read. (:

All who had played the game with the old controls had nothing but praise for the responsiveness and ease of using them. If the PS2 game could have been released with the old D-Pad controls there would not have been all the bugs and control problems, and possibly not as many cuts made to the game.
This.

DERELICT APARTMENT BLOCK

The developers did not do this level justice. It showed such promise in concept but in reality it's a major disappointment. You want to know how they butchered this fantastic level?

CONCEPTUAL STAGE

Elevator concept

APARTMENT LEVEL - If Lara doesn't get caught by the police in the previous level she gets to visit the Apartment level. This level might resemble Derelict Apartment Block and it does, with an exception. The police are not aware Lara is inside unlike in the retail where they throw a gas bomb.

1 - Lara enters the apartment through a window on the ground floor
2 - She sees a policeman knock on an apartment door
3 - She quickly runs up stairs
4 - On the upper floor she gets trapped between two policeman
5 - So she dives down the laundry chute
6 - She lands on a pile of laundry in the basement
7 - Lara must hide on top of the lift because
8 - A policeman is about to come into the basement
9 - The policeman takes the elevator with Lara on top of it
10 - The policeman leaves the elevator and continues his search
11 - Lara gets down to the floor and into a corridor
12 - Then she enters an apartment
13 - And she has to creep upstairs
14 - Past the residents who are watching TV or something
15 - She makes her way out the window
16 - And onto the roof

WAREHOUSE LEVEL - If Lara gets caught by the police in the previous level she gets to visit the Warehouse. This level might not resemble Direlict Apartment Block but if you look closely you will see derelict floors, a gas bomb being thrown, police aware of Lara's presence. This is the Derelict Apartment Block we know, only it's a warehouse instead.

1 - Lara must push an obstacle in front of the door
2 - The police fire tear gas into the building
3 - Lara runs upstairs
4 - The police fire into the building causing the old wooden floors to give away
5 - Lara continues as the building collapses beneath her
6/7 - She climbs out throwing the window and on to the roof

This might be another concept of the warehouse

DERELICT APARTMENT BLOCK LEVEL - Maybe the developers were out of time or maybe they decided to combine the apartment and the warehouse into one. In others words, it doesn't matter if Lara gets caught or not, she will end up at the same place BUT the gameplay changes and here's how. If the player doesn't get caught in the previous level, the level will act as the 'apartment level', if the players does gets caught in the previous level then level will act as the 'warehouse level'. Get it?

As a result of this merge there are two entrances: the main door and the window. The window entrance is missing from the final stage but there is a 'useless' platform near the 2nd floor window which you can only get to by using a drainpipe on the streets route and that could be the answer. The basement is also missing from the final stage. In addition and according to the sound files the police would chase Lara upstairs in the 'warehouse level'. Of course that would later be deleted.

To sum it up, this level would act differently according to the player's caution in the previous level. Getting caught means the player is in for a chase (I believe the cutscene at the end of Parisian Back Streets to be half of the cutscene where Lara gets arrested and thrown into a van). Not getting caught means a stealth level.

BETA STAGE

Notice the elevator shaft does not have doors. This would help Lara get on top of the elevator in the 'Apartment level' in order to make her way up.

LARA'S DIALOGUE

Quote:
OBSERVATION
This door is locked, I’ll need a key

STRENGTH
I’m not strong enough

STRENGTH
I feel stronger now

OBSERVATION
I think I can move that wardrobe.

Note: I found this line in Parisian Back Streets sound files but unless someone can think of another wardrobe I think this belongs here. Also remember that some sound files can be found in the wrong levels so don't be quick to assume they belong there!

OBSERVATION
Gas! Gotta get out of here! [NOT RECORDED]

Note: There are only two places where this could fit. Here or in Galleries Under Siege
POLICE DIALOGUE

Quote:
Cover the back!
Call for backup!
Take the front door.
Watch it!
Cover me.
Employ gas.
Surrender!
Throw down your weapons.
The building is surrounded.
Give yourself up.
This is your last warning.
Suspect on first floor.
First floor clear.
Suspect has moved to the second floor.
Second floor clear.
Suspect on third floor.
Third floor clear.
Suspect on fourth floor.
Fourth floor clear.
Suspect on roof.
Call for air support.

Note: It seems like a police man would search for Lara in every floor making the level a bit more dangerous. Unfortunately in the retail version the police man doesn’t move past the stairs of the ground floor

Actually in the Beta version you could also choose to fight the guards and go back out the door to explore further. There were at least 2 ways to reach the Derelict Apartment Block (probably 3 ways), so once the guards were out of the way there were several options open to the player. When Core cut out the other part of the training area they also made it impossible to fight the guards, Lara will give up as soon as they see her, whether she has a gun or not.

The security radio was nothing to do with controlling the movement of the guards, Lara could not pretend to be a guard. It was most likely so Lara could eavesdrop on what they were up. At least some of the guards were working for the Cabal, having a radio would give information and help avoid where the guards were. If Lara needed the electrical flex to escape it is more likely she used it on the lock, or to get the key, than the guard. But that is just a guess.

That's what I meant with the radio, perhaps 'control' was a bad word choice. I'll correct it.
About the apartment thing, getting out that opens a new possibility. Where did you read that ? It sounds exciting
