Can Tomb Raider survive with PC culture?
More and more I see articles like this popping up that demonize the Tomb Raiding/Adventure genre as a whole. The primary critique is that white people dont respect the cultures they are "invading" and "desecrating" despite most of us fans knowing that lara loves other cultures and sees value and beauty in uncovering or protecting the treasures she seeks.
Sure she shoots up the odd tomb but thats because action is a requirement of the "action/adventure" genre. The new film had an incredibly low viewership of people under 25 years old, arguably the most PC age group. What do you think? Can Tomb Raider and Lara Croft survive this wave of PC culture? Does Lara being a westerner by default make her incapable of respecting non-western cultures? I wanted to be an Egyptologist as a child so I find this whole argument BS and a tad demonizing to westerners but i thought it might make decent discussion. https://hyperallergic.com/436285/cas...indiana-jones/ https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.the...saviour-barbie Thoughts? There are too many people today who love to complain about anything and everything just to make themselves feel like they’re making a difference. But the world isn’t as black and white as these people try to understand it as. The movie sold incredibly well, as has the reboot series and as has the uncharted series which is more ‘guilty’ of social crimes that people love to complain about these days. I can’t wait for this current trend to die out as people mature and I don’t think it’s going to affect anything.

White person: *breathes*
The internet: OMG white privilege!!11!! It’s just a silly trend that will go away as soon as people start realizing that nobody really cares about this useless debacle, mostly due to the overreactions. How can it be taken seriously when literally everything that has to do with a person of western heritage is deemed as racist and problematic? There has to be a line drawn somewhere. Real racism and harmful discrimination should be condemned, not fictional characters going after some lost treasure. |

Most normal people don't care. It's just a bunch of loud people whining about trivial stuff. They're pretty irrelevant in the grand scheme of things.

Lara is over sexualized, Lara kills endangered species, Lara explodes one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World... Another line in her judicial record I guess. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I feel like this whole PC culture will eventually collapse on itself and in the end it will not be a cool thing to support. At first it just started as a movement to be nicer to each other, something I can get behind, but it has escalated a lot in 2014-15. Also the way I see it on twitter, it's not just white people getting demonized anymore. I see more and more bickering between hispanic and african americans too which is I think a sign that this whole movement will just die down over time, we just need to be patient. I really don't see this reaching a point where literally every ethnicity dislike the other. Give it a couple years.

Lara Croft didn't survive the PC inquisition so I see no reason why Tomb Raider itself would. The main problem is TPTB are themselves along those lines and would likely heed the vocal minority over the majority of people who just want a memorable, badass character and a fun game to play.

Well, by "PC" I assume you mean portraying other cultures in ways that aren't dismissive, stereotypical, insulting.
So, yeah, I think that's totally possible, if you've got an ounce of integrity or empathy. |
