Default How do I adjust my audio-input?

I wonder, if I've managed to turn my audio-input volume down somehow.
When I try to record sounds in game, they always sound much lower when replayed, than they did in game.
Similarly, I have tried to record my own voice via a headset, and it too sounded very low.

I have experimented with both Windows Sound Recorder and Audacity and experience no difference.

My old computer used for the recordings run Window XP.

Any ideas where I should look for control over the audio-input volume? Apparently, I can't find it by myself.
