But I don't get who are you referring to, Realtech or Core or Eidos or Square, or all of them? Because only Core had it, nobody else did, and those who had it never lost it and don't need to go looking for it

Mehh.. I can TR3, 4 and Chronicles on my phone in HD anyway via PSX emulators (I own the games so no illegal stuff there)

Of course, you don't get the HD redone textures, but the rest is HD and smoothed out.

TR3 with iOS style new textures could look lovely though

The engines are very similar, but if you look closely, they are quite different. Differences become huge when you consider new features, such as a completely new way of lighting and shading, fire special effects, weather conditions and other things. And do not forget that it is also necessary to recreate the artificial intellect of opponents and the logic of vehicles, such as a quad bike and an underwater scooter. Without the source code, it will be a completely different game, actually a fake. Unless, of course, they go by reverse engineering and disassemble the whole game in the debugger - but this is a hopelessly complex task, requiring a large number of highly qualified specialists, or even more years of painstaking work.

Believe me, I know what I'm talking about.

Not sure if it requires a large number of specialists, Paolone has been decompiling and patching the game code for a very long time now, all by himself, I think deciphering the compiled code in TR3 for all those featured and converting them to update the TR2 code would take one person 2 or 3 years if it was done as day job...

Another leap that Core made from the TR2 to the TR3 engine was that they were finally able to render triangular polygons, so big difference there too .

The initial post quotes Realtech VR's twitter as saying:
''(Gavin doesn't have it anymore)''.
I assume they are referring to Gavin Rummery from Core? If that's the case it means that he, as one of the key people of Core, once had it, but no longer has it. Does anyone really know for sure that someone else from Core has it? Or could it be lost forever?

Not to mention the particle system. I remember the first time I was playing TR3 and fired the pistols at the very beginning of Jungle. Seeing that gunsmoke rise was 'wow!'. And when it started raining later on it was magical.

I wonder if there really is such a huge difference between TR2 and 3, or 4. I mean, look at projects like OpenTOMB or OpenLARA. They have literally started from scratch and with only Rosetta Stone as any help(and they update it with their own research anyway). RealtechVR on the other hand have all the basics and they only need to modify the engine to add these new features. If they have TR4 source then it is probably even easier to adapt to TR3 gameplay features. Though I don't know lol.

But of course obviously the easiest way is to find the source code. I hope they will find it.

The only way we could ever get a port of this game was if it was remade completely if the source code is indeed lost forever.

We couldn't port it to Tomb Raider 2 engine because it is differant than what Core used to make Tomb Raider 3. With that said I am wondering if Tomb Raider 3 couldn't be ported into TRLE.

Could you strip down the TRIV engine into a TRIII one?
