I use Noesis to convert mdl files to psk then use the importer for psk. It seperates the model in the right areas, then I just export a mesh.ascii from the psk then open mesh.ascii in Blender and apply the textures and make sure there is no problems, then export as mesh.ascii again. Open up mesh.ascii in notepad and apply the textures in there and also add render groups, then convert to .mesh and everything is fine. Try and use this way psk supports bones and seperates the model into the parts that the mdl is

Open .mdl file in noesis
Export as .smd
Import .smd into blender 2.49
Export as .3ds (create render groups)
Fix UV and textures
Export as .mesh.ascii
Import mesh.ascii into blender 2.49
Import previous .smd file into scene
scale .smd to .mesh.ascii size
bone weight copy from .smd mesh to mesh.ascii mesh
set parent
delete .smd mesh
export .mesh.ascii
(yes I tried this with renamed bones and original bones)
no errors at this point...

then convert .mesh.ascii to .mesh, converter crashes
what went wrong?

Which converter do you use? Link!
Send me the Generic_Item.mesh.ascii file and I check it.

I tried to download it and its an unknown file Why is the file type a ascii_auto_file Somewhere something is going wrong, the file type is supposed to be mesh.ascii not ascii_auto_file. EDIT: I tried to open it in Blender and got an error, this is what it said:

ValueError: invalid literal for int<> with base 10: '5_boots_0.1_0_0'

I think its a problem with your mesh.ascii.

And

It worked on the other one, just a wierd file type error. I dont know whats wrong though, I could talk you through the whole process the way I do it if you like, its pretty quick, I have done it a load of times before.
