Oh my I can see it now... it really is the gun, lol

It seems there's different blending applied to the gunflash textures, possibly some hardcoded method selected for it.

In terms of achieving a more similar effect that's definitely an idea! I heard FLEP had now had the effect of breaking tomb 4 though... Or is it certain patches?

Does the engine automatically render it semi-transparant?

How about editing the texture and making the center part more white?
The lighter a semi-transparant texture is, the more white it appears ingame.
I believe it does have genuine transparency! The texture itself has it (purple area). I believe (could be wrong) But I do think the engine does force some type of transparency on, pretty sure at the least it has some way of modifying its appearance apart from the light it releases at least I think.

My theory is that the gunflash is positioned differently in TR4 than it is in TR3 and would require a repositioning of the mesh in order to get it to match up.

As for the textures, I would start with removing any flags for transparency from them in StrPix to see how it behaves in a neutral setup.

Sorry Dustie, I was struggling with getting the shot on time so that happened, very sorry!
But I do think there something to do with its appearance being modified in game as you said.

I managed to get this appearance out of the sprite:

Its far more similar but now it seems odd to me which does make me think its possibly a little engine related or something along those lines, to save time the original picture:

The centre white is showing more white now!

I did what Titak said though, in this instance I made it brighter on the whites mostly, which definitely improves it.
Although looking at it this step further it does genuinely seem as though it is rendered differently to TR3Gold
That if it is the case seems like it can't be perfectly replicated sadly, but definitely a step closer at least!

It seems that the mesh is rotated differently when it's displayed in TR4. In TR3Gold it seems to be tilted at 45 degrees, while in TR4 it's only slightly titled to the side...

The Gunflash is displayed for 3 frames and while it is displayed, it rotates
It also has a different Rotation each time you fire

Wow. Rotating gunflash? That's some next-gun stuff right there.

Well this helps a lot, it makes sense I mean. So if it is rotating it would inevitably appear a little odd then I suppose?

I imagine this is hardcoded or unchangeable

I do believe the transparency acts a little different than what it does in TRLE. Honestly, it looked a lot better in TR3 in my opinion as TRLE was far more simplified in terms of gimmicks in the engine. If need be, perhaps check the sprites used for the gun flash in the level file of a TR3 level to see if it was a little different but I think all the sprites used from TR3 are pretty much the same as it was carried over to TRLE.

The gunflash texture is greyscale in TR3 (because the tint is applied additionally).
The TRLE/TR4 gunflash texture is yellow, but the tint is applied aswell.
