Default Project Zero/Fatal Frame general thread

Know in Japan as Zero (零), Europe as Project Zero and America as Fatal Frame. Created and developed by Tecmo-Koei, this survival horror series arms you with nothing more than the Camera Obscura. A mystical device capable of capturing restless spirits on film. Using it, it’s your task to uncover the different mysteries of the world and return safely. As of now there are five main games released, with the fifth one being released soon outside of Japan, two spin-offs games, one manga and a remake.

The Playstation and Xbox Era

零/Project Zero/Fatal Frame
October 1986. After Miku ‘s brother, Mafuyu, has gone missing after visiting the Himuro Mansion in search for his mentor, who also went missing there along with his assistant and editor while conducting research, Miku decides to go out there and look for your brother. Once there she’s under constant attack by restless spirits. Can she solve the mystery of the mansion and save her brother from the original owner’s spirit?

This game has been inspired by the supposedly true story of the real Himuro Mansion in Japan where gruesome sacrifices and murders took place in its walls. So beware the next time you decide to play the game!

Originally released in 2001, the game received very positive reviews from different reviewers. With an average of ~81% on GameRankings and 74/100 on MetaCritic. With the Xbox version doing slightly less on GameRankings with ~79% and slightly better on MetaCritic with 77/100.

Xbox Version:
For the Xbox ports Tecmo made some changes to the first three games. For this game the changes are as followed: one new ending, a couple of new costumes, new difficulty setting and a new game mode.

How to play it?
This game is of course playable on any Playstation 2 and original Xbox system as long as the games copy matches the systems region. Don’t own a PS2 or Xbox anymore? You can download the game only from the American Playstation Network on the Playstation 3 since May 2013. Microsoft doesn’t have it downloadable, however the game can be played on the Xbox 360 with some cutscenes playback having problems with the video output, but other than that the game works fine.

II: Crimson Butterfly
When the plans for a dam construction in a forest are underway Mio and Mayu Amakura decide to go their old favorite spot in the forest before it’s too late. Once there Mayu gets distracted by a butterfly and follows it. Mio follows in haste once she notices this, but after a short chase the sky has gone dark and they arrive in a strange abandoned village. They figure it’s the fabled Minakami Village and get pulled in by a strange force. Mayu starts acting stranger and stranger and eventually walks off from Mio leaving here alone in the town in search for her and a way out of the town before it’s too late.

Originally released in 2003, the game once again received very positive reviews from different reviewers. With an average of ~81% on GameRankings and 81/100 on MetaCritic. With the Xbox version doing slightly better on both GameRankings and MetaCritic averaging with ~84% and 84/100 respectively.

Xbox Version:
For this game the changes are as followed: new first person mode allowing the entire game to be played like this instead of only with the Camera Obscura, shop feature which allows you to trade in points for film and healing items, survival mode, new costumes and one new ending. Overall the game was improved upon graphically due to the Xbox’s improved capabilities.

No problems are known except that the PAL version is region-locked unlike the other versions and the game supposedly will not work on a NTSC-J (Japanese) at all.

III: The Torment
After Rei Kurosawa lost her fiancé, Yuu Asou, in a car accident due to her reckless driving, she’s in mourning. After two months she finds a photo she has taken with the likeness of her dead fiancé and start having recurring nightmare of an old manor, the ‘Manor of Sleep’, in which she is touched by a tattooed ghost. After waking up she notices a bruise there where the ghost has touched her, and every time she dreams of the house the bruise spreads. When she decides to investigate the situation she starts receiving notes from a close friend of Yuu and learns that her assistant is suffering from the same fate as her.
When the lines between dreams and reality start to become blurry, ghosts start invading her house and the symptoms becoming worse and worse. Can she find out what is happening to her and her friend?

Originally released in 2005 on the Playstation 2, the game once again received very positive reviews from different reviewers, though slightly less than the previous entry in the series. With an average of ~79% on GameRankings and 78/100 on MetaCritic.

Xbox Version:
Probably due to the Xbox 360 already being out at the time and Microsoft having completely pulled the plug out of the original Xbox by this point there never was an Xbox version developed.

Nintendo Era

Now one thing before people start complaining about the future of the series, keep in mind that the only reason the series is still going on is because Nintendo is actually the company that’s still standing behind the series.

Mask of the Lunar Eclipse
In 1970 five girls were kidnapped by the suspected serial killer, Yō Haibara, one of which was Ruka Minazuki. They were rescued some time later by investigator Chōshirō Kirishima, however when rescued none of the girls seem to remember anything. When ten years later two of the girls pass away mysteriously, the remaining three victims decide to go back to the place where they were held against their wills to try and get back their memories. Once back however, they start to remember more than they’ve wanted.

Original released in July 2008, this game marks the first time that the series has appeared on a Nintendo console (co-developed and published by), and this brought a major shift in the way the game is played. The biggest and most important change is that the game is now played with a dynamic third person camera similar to Resident Evil 4. The game was well received by Edge with an 8/10 and 34/40 by Famitsu.
The game was rumoured and eventually confirmed for release in Europe by multiple different advertisements leaks from Nintendo France. Rumour has it that due to the game being buggy in some places and the refusal of these being fixed by the developers, the game was quickly and quitely pulled even before the official announcement was made. Even though an official localisation for Europe being (partially) done.

How to play it?
This game is of course playable on any Wii(U) system as long as you have a Japanese system.
Although the game was never officially released outside of Japan, there is however a fan translation for the game that’s rather accurate to the original. This will work on any Wii(U) regardless of region if done correctly, however, this is done through homebrew which is not condoned by me or this forum. It’s at your own risk.

2: Crimson Butterfly: Wii Edition
While still the same game on the surface, the Wii Edition is not just a simple port of the original game with a few extras like the original Xbox port. The game has in fact been entirely remade from the ground up in the, back then, new engine created for the fourth entry of the series. This brought a lot of changes along with it to the classic including, but not limited to: new third person camera angle as with Mask of the Lunar Eclipse (think RE4), all maps have been (slightly) changed because of this. All FMV’s have been changed, extended or are completely new. The stones are now played through the Miimote with brand new recorded dialogue. A few story inconsistencies have been resolved. There are two brand-new endings, which are this time not decided on the difficulty the game is being played on, but rather how you play the game and much more.

Released in 2012 on the Wii, the remake received very positive reviews from different reviewers, though slightly less than the original. With an average of ~78% on GameRankings and 77/100 on MetaCritic.

How to play it?
This game is of course playable on any Wii(U) system as long as the games copy matches the systems region.

If you love this series and own either a Japanese or European Wii you owe it to yourself to give this remake a try. Some of the changes might not click, like the new voice-acting (and the lack of the Japanese voice-acting), but if you can get over that you’ll have a solid experience that’ll be different from anything you remember!

Maiden of Black Water
Yuuri Kozukata, who works in an antique shop, has a special gift. She can see the ‘shadow’ of objects she touches and can bring people back from this ‘shadow world’. This is the reason she usually distances herself off of most people. However she does use her gift if people get lost and someone asks for her help.
When a young girl one day comes and asks if she can find her friend who went missing near Mt. Hikami. The nearby forest is known as the suicide forest and people go there for a ‘proper’ death that will not leave them lingering around as restless spirits. Once there she finds the girl, but is seemingly too late as she slits her own throat just when she arrives. However strange events begin to follow Yuuri also outside of the forest, and slowly she starts to consider committing suicide.

Much like the original game which is based on the supposedly real-life events, this game is based on the actual real life Aokigahara forest, better known as the Suicide Forest, at the foot of Mt. Fuji.

Originally released in 2014 on the WiiU, with a fall release for America and Europe this year, the game has received positive reviews from Famitsu in Japan with a total score of 33/40. More will of course come when the game has finally been release outside of Japan.

Hopes for a port?

Good idea to make a new thread now that FF5 is getting released in the West. I hope it's successful, the gaming world is seriously lacking in good ghost-themed horror games.

Why do we need a general thread? Can we not just have a thread discussing a game?

You want to discuss FF5? We have a thread for that. You want to discuss FF2? Start a thread discussing FF2.

Why should anyone have to wade through a spoiler filled thread to discuss a specific topic?

One was only for old mobile phones in Japan and there's barely any real material of it online. And the other is a terrible 3DS game. So I didn't really see a reason why I would bother with those two. They're innocent enough I guess, but still

But still they are part of the franchise, and too me that's a good enough reason to add them to the list.

It's been confirmed that Maiden of the Black Water will release in Europe on 10 October, and not only will there be a retail edition. There will also, once again, be a Limited Edition to accompany the release!

Sorry America for Nintendo of America being Nintendo of America...

Is the physical copy exclusive to the limited edition? Only the LE is up for pre-order over here.

Yes it seems the LE is the only way to obtain a physical copy. Probably to lower the risk of loss as much as possible.

Yayyyy!!!! Thank holy **** for that. Cannot wait to play this game.

Now, lets hope the V.A is better than the horrible ''English'' dubs for PZ2 Remake.

Not diggin' that PZ Logo though - seriously, I could make a better one than that haha
