The Crash Bandicoot remaster was made with the Unity engine, they didn't update the original code. The same could be done with the old TRs.

But it looks so strange in some places, since it assumes omnidirectional spotlights in places where diffuse light would make much more sense. The result is that Lara casts sharp shadows near a lava lake or from a water-colored light in the center of a pool, for example. Not exactly believable. The engine can't be blamed, since the level files don't provide detailed lighting information, but in my opinion, it's better to disable dynamic lighting all together in this case than to produce nonsense effects.

I'm sure you will be able to switch it off if you don't like it, no worries.

Personally I think the fully dynamic shadows for full scenes aren't really needed anyway. The game would benefit greatly from good Ambient Occlusion though and each character could get its own shadow made in the same way as Lara's shadow in the Dreamcast version of the game.

Obviously real time shadows as they currently are implemented in OL hardly make sense, because there is barely an actual sun or other light in the levels that would cast shadows like that, but it's merely eye-candy. Ambient occlusion also has its drawbacks and the "shadow underneath the shilhouette" thing isn't that far from a "nonsense effect" either. I believe once actual gameplay functionality is more-less complete other visual effects will be implemented and we will be able to decide our own composition of effects to use.

Sorry for bumping an old thread but:-
It looks like the remaster has been given a go ahead along with remasters of TR2 & TR3. Quote:
I also emailed them recently regarding this and they said that a video of the TR3 remaster is scheduled for release 1 April. |

I simply cannot wait to see what it looks like. I'm also curious to see this OpenVR and "new 3D engine" in action. |

Not surprised given the recent events. I expected Realtech to be on it in no time. At least it will be sort of free this time round.
