Default MQO Imp/Exp for 3ds max by sio29

This Importer/Exporter gives the possibility to open .MQO files inside 3ds max and save them in the same format. This way you can make changes to your wad meshes in strpix without using programs such as Metasequoia or LithUnwrap to convert your file to 3ds max compatible format. No more scale problems. What's more, it seems to remember textures and their positions, so when you edit your mesh and import it to strpix it has it's texturing untouched.

So far I tested it only in 3ds max 2010, but it seems sio29 made his plugin compatible also with other versions.

IMPORTANT: The above archive contains plugins which work for 3DS MAX 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011 32-bit. There are no plugins available anymore for 3DS MAX 2012 and newer. There are also no surviving plugins for 64-bit versions.

WARNING: You must have StrPix 3.9.5 Rev14 or newer to use .MQO files. You can find it HERE.

Sorry for bumping this thread(as it seems noone cared for these plugins), but I just wanted to tell you that the site which hosted MQO plugins for newer versions of 3DS MAX is dead. Every plugin that was put on maxuser.com is lost.

Because of that plugins for 3DS MAX 2012, 2013 and 2014 and 64-bit plugins for any 3DS MAX are not available anymore.

To make sure the rest of these plugins won't disappear, I have packed them into an archive and uploaded to mediafire.com and box.net. Links are available in the first post.

Also, if anyone still has plugins for mentioned 3DS MAX versions, please let me know/share them with us.

And personally I think it is a sad day for 3ds max TRLE users. These plugins allowed to work directly with 3ds max and strpix without any third party programs like LithUnwrap or Metasequoia. I truly hate it how TRLE is so dependent on MQO/DXF file formats these days. If we had an obj support, that would help a lot in using other programs with 3ds max.

How many people use 3DStudioMax, though? It's not a free program and I think that's the glass ceiling. But I don't think all is lost, maybe someday someone will be able to write OBJ support for StrPix.

It is free for educational purpose so I guess a lot of people use it.

The problem with OBJ is that vertex colours are not supported, at least not in the standard format. So if you want to light your rooms in a 3D program you will need to use a exchange format which supports that, like MQO.

strPIX is only used for objects and unless I'm mistaken it doesn't respect vertex colors when exporting/importing DXF or MQO files, so I don't think that's the problem at all in this case. Besides adding support of another file format doesn't equal dropping other.

Sorry, yes you're talking about strpix. In that case OBJ support will be great.

But you need to get it through a school/college/university, right?

EDIT:
Looks like you can really get it for free... that's quite amazing, actually.

I guess it's simply the matter of most people being used to Metasequoia, that's all... 3DStudio isn't as popular for plain objects editing, but people making animations use it for sure.

People who work on animations are on the other hand forced to use 3ds max, since TRViewer only supports 3DS filetype. This is also bad I think, because *.3ds file format isn't really universal either(?). I guess it's more supported than mqo though. I'm not sure what is the most used file format for animation editing though.

About metaseq, well I'm not surprised it's so commonly used when some of the most important tools(meta2tr, strpix) support metasequoia-compatible file types only. I mean metaseq is not a bad program, but it's not the only one either.

Maybe it's about the structure of the format, there must be a reason it was chosen above other software out there.

Perhaps as a free program it has/had its documentation available and thus it was easy to program read/write support for its file format.
