Indeed Sonatina is not a GM soudfont. It has variations (solo & sections) for the same instruments (violins, flutes, oboes, clarinets, etc), but yeah, it has only orchestral instruments.
Oh, and for a TR-like piano, I'd actually advise that old soundfont Windows has been using for years. At least in the TR2's main theme it sounds similar. |

Why don't you ask Nathan himself which VSTs he uses?

He was using a Roland JV-1080. I don't know where this information came from but it has been reused in several places so I guess it's true.
Oohh, I've typed nathan mc cree roland jv 1080 and I've found this thread, there's some interesting reading. EDIT: According to L'histoire de Tomb Raider by Alexandre Serel he used a JV-90 and a JV-1080 with an expansion card for the orchestral instruments, including strings, horns, harp, vibraphone, piano and oboe (but not only these, it's just the only ones mentioned). EDIT2: The thread mentions SR-JV80-02 as the expansion card he used. It does sound similar indeed. Unfortunately I'm afraid it will be hard to find a soundfont of anything like that. I have absolutely no idea if it's okay to double-post as I posted yesterday (well, considering the hour it is right now, it's been two days technically), so please tell me if I shouldn't have.
Tomb Raider PSX Cover - FL Studio This guy has found a soundfont reusing the original samples, or at least something very close. It's not as high quality as I expected (it's just the same as what we have in the TR soundtrack I mean, but I was hoping it would be somehow... better), and doesn't seem to have all the instruments. But it has several variations of strings, pizzicato, piano, harp, oboe, flute, classical guitar, french horns and choirs. And they really really really do sound similar. So they're probably from the same source. |

You can only get so much quality from a synth. Aside from a few differences it does sound close.
