Default Question(s) about a couple pieces of Software

I have just downloaded two pieces of software, because they are need to run a game I downloaded and just wondering what they are. One of the software was .Net 4.0 framework and the other is XNA 4.0 redist.

Runtime executables - sets of libraries of unified functions. They are used in custom applications which makes the projecting and building of the latter easier and the installations themselves more lightweight. Thus to run different apps using those runtimes you must have only one copy of each runtime installed.

So in other words your saying it will run other programs installed on the computer a lot easier.

The programs which are designed to use unified runtimes are easier to write and use.
The installation of runtimes affects only programs designed to use them, not any programs.

Those runtimes are obligatory to install to run the game, because they are used by the game as vital part of its code. It's just like you are using the alphabet of 26 letters to build various words, but w/o those letter there would be no words at all

So another question. I have downloaded a game that requires them both, so other than this one game are they worth installing?

If you have no other programs which use both runtimes, they are of no use. But the thing is - many modern Windows third-party utilites use at least .NET framework. So to have MS NET is a must.

So your saying install them then, because in the end that is what I'll be doing.

Yup, you will end installing at least NET Framework sooner or later. XNA - if you're into XNA Lara or some other development.

I didn't know that this XNA application was to do with XNA Lara, and to be fully honest I don't even know what XNA Lara is.

The .NET framework is used by many of the newer Windows applications. It is similar to the older C runtime or Visual Basic runtime required by many programs. Except there aren't 100 different versions to sort out. Basically it provides standardized functionality for all programs that use it.

XNA is a game development platform that allows you to develop a game for both the PC and XBox without rewriting your code. It is, of course, specific to MS.

Just consider them both to be one of those required Microsoft installs. But make sure to install them directly from the MS website.
