I have a feeling the Tomb Raider movie will be very, very similar to Ghost in the Shell in terms of adaption qualities. It will nail the look and feel of the TR2013 game, but the storyline will take liberties from the source material and fall flat.
I don't know anything about Ghost in the Shell or whether the film was meant as an adaptation. The TR movie isn't trying to be an adaptation, it's loosely inspired by it, which, imo, is probably a good thing. There were some good story elements in there, but also not so great ones.

I agree, but it's not even taking the best of the reboot... The Himiko backstory was one of the only good things about the plot and that has been tarnished in the movie script, as well as Lara's bond with Roth which was underused in the reboot and I thought would have had potential in the movie. They managed to get rid of Sam, however what they replaced her with is far worse and almost a huge creative liberty when it comes to every origin of Lara's we've had so far. I don't care if this is a new take on the franchise, you would NOT reboot Batman and have a grown up Bruce Wayne meet his father who never died after all. There is no impactful first kill scene either, but this can be argued as a good thing as in the game it happens so fast and theres no time for Lara to mourn every person she kills as she becomes a mass murderer.

This is also how I feel. An adaptation can look like the source material (and even I'm still not impressed by the photos we've seen so far, they look like cosplay at best and the EW photo showed how obvious it was that she was being kept up by wires) but is the story accurate? That's why all of these video game adaptations fail. Based on what I know (including the script leak) I don't think the story captures the essence of Lara's character at all. But then again, I haven't seen the film yet. I just don't like what I've heard/seen so far and with video game movies, I don't consider that a good sign for the outcome.

As far as I know that scene has changed from the screenplay one of the articles mentioned it was shot on a beach and in the screenplay it's in a different location. It seems quite a few of the action sequences have changed. We've seen them rehearsing a duel axe fight sequence on instagram and as far as I can recall Lara rarely even uses the axe in the script.

I really hope that script has been heavily beefed up because it is very mediocre at best IMO. Some parts are good, but others fall so flat and the Yamatai section is very underwhelming and a complete bastardisation of the game. Even worse than the game which had terrible writing at parts.

Regarding baby_doll, I do really like the stills that have released so far because they feel quite organic, while some like yourself may argue it looks like Cosplay, i'm happy with Lara's look and am not sure how you don't look like cosplay when adapting a game character's exact outfit with slight changes. The sets don't look hugely fantastical and CGI in the stills either making it look slightly cheaper but I'm happy with that because I didn't want a hugely stylised film.

Regarding Lara herself in the script, I think they go a little bit overboard at the start with trying to make her look un-posh. Lara, in every incarnation, would have always been a classy girl through the years. They try and paint Lara as hugely unglamorous to parts where it's like "Really?" but I do like that she's cocky and sarcastic. That's what's currently missing from Reboot Lara.

Well, I can't even counter your argument, James as I saw the word 'script' and scarpered. .

If that really is her agent's website, then I'd say that was confirmation. They don't need to speculate. So that article from a while back was correct. Good to know. I think she's a good choice for Ana.
