At this time, only PAL versions of the PS3 lack the emotion chip. As yet, the NTSC design, available in Japan and North America, is still being built with the emotion chip inside. Sony have announced no plans to alter the build of the NTSC model, although I would agree that this seems likely at a later stage.
As for it not being a problem, there is a marked difference between hardware and software emulation. Hardware emulation on PS3 allowed for a 98% compatibilty of PSOne and PS2 titles. Software emulation has meant that this percentage has decreased to around 70, but with more than half the 'compatible' games having noticable issues, most commonly with FMV and sound, but in other areas too. Only 30% of games, or thereabouts, are playable with no reported issues at the moment, and, going on press statements and interviews, it doesn't seem as though this is an area that Sony are keen to address or improve. |
