Although she was first diagnosed in 2001 (when she was hospitalized for a physical and mental breakdown),
“I didn’t want to believe it,” the superstar singer-songwriter tells PEOPLE editor in chief Jess Cagle.

Carey says she finally sought treatment recently after “the hardest couple of years I’ve been through” — years of professional upheaval, an E! reality show and romantic drama.

“Until recently I lived in denial and isolation and in constant fear someone would expose me,” she says.
“It was too heavy a burden to carry and I simply couldn’t do that anymore. I sought and received treatment, I put positive people around me and I got back to doing what I love — writing songs and making music.”

My poor Queen I'm glad she was brave enough to do this.
Even if it's because that bitch Stella was blackmailing her with videos and photos related to this.

She needs our support Lambily!

Has it been known before that she had bipolar disorder? 'Cause I did not know that at all. Well, that explains why her songs are so incredibly emotional, gurl she been depressed throughout her career.

You know, in a weird way I think depression inspires so much creativity and soulful expressive writing, that then transpires into something beautiful.

I've always been the weirdo that finds funerals endearing because they're a meaningful celebration of someone who lived, and impacted us all in particular way, in a similar way that music can.

I didn't comment on it much because it's her personal business, but I had thought it came off like she was really downplaying her 2001 breakdown in interviews. She would describe it like "I just needed a few days' rest" and like the media were making things up. They probably were to an extent, the media are savage, but you could tell she was in a bad way.

I'm happy she came through though Breaking down stigmas of talking about mental health is so important, so I admire her for coming forward even after all this time. I guess she feels ready now.

No, It was never public knowledge.
Everyone knows of her breakdown in 2001 but like Yeauxleaux said she played it down to being overworked and needing some rest.
She'd clearly not come to terms with/accepted this condition.

So true also hated on by many. They fail to appreciate good music.

The way these should have been full songs.

They have bad taste then Omg especially the Rainbow Interlude. How can you not love this? Same goes to the underappreciated E=MC2

I even think the Glitter soundtrack was underrated tbh. I'll forever be slayed by the sassy "AH!" at the beginning of Loverboy;

That beat at the start as well, oh my God it gives me such life.

I wonder if the soundtrack might have fared a bit better if it wasn't unfortunately released on 9/11? I know critics ripped into it regardless, but maybe there wouldn't have been such a huge and horrible distraction.
