They scared me too. TRI is creepy as hell. I like to play them at night with in the dark...

It feels daft to say this now, because graphics have advanced so much, but at the time I found TR1 extremely scary. I used to stop and try and peer around the corners, especially in places like Egypt with the mummies.

The TRI mummies are the scariest things in all of TR to be honest. Cuts it close, with the poison crawling monster in TRIII Antarctica.

Did anyone else used to jump whenever an enemy would come out of nowhere?

If you are talking about the mummy in Obelisk of Khamoon at the top of some stairs then yeah I did.

I never thought about not fighting them even though my scaredy-cat technique was to run into the temple and side jump + shooting (often just using pistols to save more valuable ammo) out through the doorway when they appeared.
Only problem is you sometimes have to provoke them to do that and you risk getting hit when jumping out and back into the temple. That sound of their hooves and the whinnying I always dreaded hearing, ramping up the stress. Another of TR1's memorable use of audio to enhance the gameplay experience. |
